The Sea Has Many Voices - [E1] Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant — Sharks!
play

05/10/19 • 39 min

Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant sit down with Greg Stone and share stories of their lifelong passion with sharks. Both Ocean and Juan live in Hawaii and run a company called One Ocean Diving, which focuses on studying the behavior of sharks and the effects of human contact with the species. As a marine biologist, Ocean studies shark behavior and body language to ultimately avoid negative perceptions and interactions with this species. The lively discussion touches on the unique qualities of sharks, overfishing, the diminishing of prey, and the negative image that sharks have which ultimately limits the compassion that is needed to protect and preserve these amazing animals. Ocean is a self-proclaimed ambassador for sharks and is an outspoken advocate for the survival and success of sharks in our oceans. The Sea Has Many Voices - [Season:4 Episode:1] Dr. Steven Katona and Diana Palikas
play

07/14/21 • 52 min

Dr. Greg Stone speaks with his two colleagues, Dr. Steve Katona and Diana Palikas about their recent collaboration on a white paper entitled ‘Where Should Metals for the Green Transition Come From?’. The document breaks new ground by exploring the environmental, social and economic costs of different sources of base metals required to transition the world away from fossil fuels. The conversation touches on the fact that polymetallic nodules are made of almost 100% usable minerals and contain no toxic levels of deleterious elements, compared to ores mined from the land which have increasingly low yields (often below 1%) and often do contain toxic levels of deleterious elements. Fair disclosure: Dr. Stone works for The Metals Company who funded this paper.

The Sea Has Many Voices - [E4] Jared Diamond — Anthropologist
play

05/21/19 • 55 min

Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond joins Greg Stone to share their passion for the ocean and how it has shaped our human condition. As a renowned historian, Jared discusses how man started to branch out and expand their world by island hopping, thereby creating new cultures in the Mediterranean and South Pacific. Their conversation continues to explore the origin of languages, customs, mapmaking, all connected to man’s relationship with the ocean and the need to push out beyond the horizon. Dr. Diamond points out that the ocean was not only about exploration, but the richness of the seacoast accelerated man’s permanent settled living, which was a leap in the day to day existence of humans historically. Dr. Diamond and Dr. Stone’s long standing friendship is apparent as the two wander comfortably with anecdotes and observations gathered from a lifetime of discovery and curiosity. Dr. Jerry Schubel, President and CEO of The Aquarium of the Pacific, sits down with Greg Stone to talk about the significance of aquariums and how they are on the frontlines in dealing with the effects of climate change. Since his arrival at AOTP, his mandate is to transform the institution into something more than a fish tank. During his tenure as CEO, Jerry has prioritized highlighting climate change solutions while educating the public. He feels there is a responsibility to lead the environmental movement because of the popularity and trust the public has with aquariums. More people go to aquariums and zoos than all sporting events combined. By creating partnerships with top scientists and the creative abilities of the aquarium staff, AOTP offers us an insight into climate change impact. The importance of engaging with marine life and its diversity is an important step in connecting us with the reality of species extinction through habitat destruction. The aquarium’s new 30,000 sq. ft. exhibit tells the story of the changing relationship of the planet and people and how to keep it sustainable. One of the main exhibitions highlights the coral reef ecosystem and how and why coral reefs are dying. Jerry and the aquarium’s mission of informing and engaging the public on the effects of climate change exemplify the significance of the role of the Aquarium of the Pacific in today’s world. The Sea Has Many Voices - [E6] Anne Cohen — Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
play

05/21/19 • 37 min

Anne Cohen, scientist, oceanographer, and self-proclaimed “curious person” has spent the last twenty-five years at The Wood’s Hole Oceanic Institute studying and exploring her passions with coral reefs. “I think of a coral reef as a world, almost a planet, with every single type of life living on it.” Besides their complexity and beauty, coral reefs serve a significant purpose with coastal protection as they absorb the majority of the energy of the ocean. This form of protection is important in keeping our coastline stable during storms and tidal extremes. Her research with coral reefs is extremely important in these times as their existence is in jeopardy from man’s impact on the ocean. Today almost 20 to 30 percent of all coral reefs are in danger from pollution, sediment, global warming, and agricultural runoff. Despite the overwhelming odds, Anne is optimistic that the work she and others in the field is making a difference in the resurgence of coral reefs globally. “Twenty-five years ago the situation was quite different, but through science and through awareness, huge programs have been put in place that helps us learn from our previous mistakes.” Join acclaimed oceanographer and conservationist Dr. Greg Stone on a journey of understanding and hope through our oceans with The Sea Has Many Voices podcast: https://theseahasmanyvoices.com/ Greg Stone has been an advocate for ocean conservation, sustainable industry, and marine research for decades.
