[E16 P1] Jerry Schubel — President and CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific | Pt.1

08/01/19 • 21 min

The Sea Has Many Voices
Dr. Jerry Schubel, President and CEO of The Aquarium of the Pacific, sits down with Greg Stone to talk about the significance of aquariums and how they are on the frontlines in dealing with the effects of climate change. Since his arrival at AOTP, his mandate is to transform the institution into something more than a fish tank. During his tenure as CEO, Jerry has prioritized highlighting climate change solutions while educating the public. He feels there is a responsibility to lead the environmental movement because of the popularity and trust the public has with aquariums. More people go to aquariums and zoos than all sporting events combined. By creating partnerships with top scientists and the creative abilities of the aquarium staff, AOTP offers us an insight into climate change impact. The importance of engaging with marine life and its diversity is an important step in connecting us with the reality of species extinction through habitat destruction. The aquarium’s new 30,000 sq. ft. exhibit tells the story of the changing relationship of the planet and people and how to keep it sustainable. One of the main exhibitions highlights the coral reef ecosystem and how and why coral reefs are dying. Jerry and the aquarium’s mission of informing and engaging the public on the effects of climate change exemplify the significance of the role of the Aquarium of the Pacific in today’s world.
