The Purpose Effect - Modern Women and the Balancing Act - with Adele Barlow
play

11/29/21 • 44 min

Adele Barlow is the founder of Copy & Co, a boutique copywriting agency and the author of a number of books on finding purposeful work. Her latest book, ‘Modern Woman’ is a collection of essays on the balancing act modern millennial women perform every day.
As Adele writes: “the ideal worker is available 24/7, but so is the ideal mother. Millennial women have been told to dream big, but in reality, there not only remains a glass ceiling, but also a glass wall and a glass cliff”.

We talk about why millennial women feel like they are never "getting it right", whether it is possible to “have it all” and if so, at what cost?

For the last five years Tanya Rolfe has been on a mission to get more money into the hands of women. This started with the Ladies Investment Club in Singapore and Her Capital; a seed venture fund investing in female founders in Southeast Asia. Her current projects are Harriet; which supports female founders seeking to access capital and Sophia; a for-women by-women financial education platform.
In this episode we talk about:

  1. The opportunity that gender lens investing presents.
  2. Why we need more diverse fund managers, because despite data showing female founded businesses perform really well, VCs are risk averse and analyse businesses based on what has 'worked' in the past or products that they would use themselves.
  3. Data shows women gravitate more to impact investments and ESG investments. This means that everybody benefits when women control more money.
  4. Women control a third of the world's wealth. It's not enough (considering we represent 51% of the global population) but it's still $93 trillion.
  5. How to talk to children about money. Did you know most of our money mindset is developed by the age of 7? (*welp*)

The Purpose Effect - Why Are We So Anxious? With Agi Heale
play

11/22/21 • 44 min

Agi is the author of ‘Generation Panic’, an extremely helpful and relatable guide to managing anxiety for those within 'Generation Panic' (or GP'ers as she calls them) - who Agi describes as "strong, brilliant, ambitious people, but they often have a big dollop of insecurity that makes them wobble at certain moments of their lives."

Agi left a career in financial services recruitment after she started having panic attacks. At first she thought she just had too much on her plate – work was fast paced and she was planning her wedding. But upon returning to work after her honeymoon, those feelings hadn’t changed. So she set off to figure out what would truly make her happy and found her purpose in coaching and by writing ‘Generation Panic’. Agi is now a certified professional coach (CPCC & PCC qualified and a Certified NLP Practitioner) and the founder of Westbourne Associates.

The Purpose Effect - Bite Sized #4 - How To Tell Stories So People Will Listen
play

10/03/22 • 16 min

In a world crowded with "messaging" how do we tell engaging stories? How do we convince our audience to come with us on a journey?
In this episode I bring together some of the lessons in storytelling I've learned from my guests on this podcast, my previous career in television and from leaders in brand storytelling. This episode is for professionals looking to communicate authentically, transparently and build relationships with their audience.
The four elements of engaging storytelling:
1. Make sure the audience is the Hero of your story;
2. Establish Trust through transparency;
3. Keep your message simple.
4. Be the guide and give a gift.

Previous episodes I discuss:

  • Episode 6: Sexy Ageing with Tracy Minnoch Nuku
  • Episode 37: Shen-Tel Lee on Kuching Food Aid and Cause Driven Community Building
  • Episode 39: Women in Web3: Bree Yek on Public Goods, Sustainability and Tech for Good

The Purpose Effect - Abbey Pantano on Increasing Impact Through Partnerships
play

07/17/23 • 43 min

Abbey Pantano is a community architect and the founder of Impact Collab, a digital community for impact businesses based in Sydney / Gadigal Country.

Abbey started her journey into impact business because she wanted to be part of the solution for plastic waste. This led her to start The Raw Straw, a business that sold wheat stem drinking straws. The Raw Straw has been wound up, but Abbey talks candidly about the failures and learnings that led her to discover that social impact entrepreneurs were her people. And that she could help them by creating a community that would allow them to make more impact. So, Impact Collab was born.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The importance of community in business building;
  • Getting comfortable with failure and how to build up tolerance to failure;
  • How partnerships can help you grow faster, more cheaply. Partnerships are 25% less expensive than digital marketing;
  • The business case for partnerships;

The Purpose Effect - Deborah Henry on Education and Access for Refugees
play

10/25/21 • 52 min

Deborah Henry is a T.V host, model and founder of Fugee Org – a not for profit organization that provides education and vocational opportunities for refugee children and youth in Malaysia.
In 2009, Deborah co-founded the Fugee School to provide maths and English tuition to 4 refugee children. Fugee Org now encompasses not only the school, but also Fugeelah – a social enterprise jewellery brand that funds the school; the Youth Academy, that provides training and other vocational opportunities and the recently launched Hi Ed Scholarship to enable refugee youth access to tertiary education.

We talk about the misconception that refugees are a ‘drain’ on social systems – in fact, the research shows the opposite. With access to education, healthcare and the job market refugees become active and willing contributors to society. We also talk about how she keeps herself grounded, particularly when the pandemic created even more need.

You can find out more about Fugee Org here: https://fugee.org/

If you would like to support Fugee Org, check out some of the beautiful jewellery for sale at Fugeelah – a women-led conscious jewellery brand that educates, employs and empowers refugee children and youth: https://fugeelah.com/
