89 Deconstructing Sex and Selling
Explicit content warning
01/17/22 • 69 min
My podcast guest today, Lucy Rowett, is passionate about exposing some of the predatory practices in the coaching world that seem to poke at our pain and rub at our trauma.
She says "This conversation is so on point right now".
Lucy is an entrepreneur and a Clinical Sexologist and as such, she knows a thing or two about sex, trauma and selling.
So, this is a two pronged conversation.
We talk about sex AND selling
Let's address the sex first.
When we reach our midlife years our libido can lower the reasons are multifactorial but some are deeper than we might be looking.
OUR LOW LIBIDO IS NOT JUST OUR HORMONES
Our inability to open up to great sex and self pleasure are usually nothing to do with anything being at fault with you (or your hormones). It's part of a larger systemic culture that pokes at our trauma causing us to feel shameful and guilt ridden about our sexuality.
Both Lucy Rowett and I LOVE breaking taboos. If anyone's gonna go there, we will! So if you're interested in joining us on this rebellious journey, here's what you'll be involved in.
💦 What constitutes good sex?
🍆 The difference between excited pleasure and relaxed pleasure.
💦 How the infiltration of the 'growth mindset' might be affecting our sex lives.
🍆 The benefits of exploring your own eros within and without a relationship, especially to heal sexual trauma
💦 How purity culture fucks up our sexuality
🍆 Pleasure and guilt
💦 Stress as a safe feeling and relaxation as a challenging feeling
🍆 Vulva shame IS trauma
💦 Not knowing what you want in bed
🍆 Healing sexuality as a form of soul retrieval
THEN....
❌ The lineage of personal development (white protestantism and evangelism)
❌ Being asked to over extract our internal resources by bosses or coaches
❌ The dangers of business coaching without any trauma knowledge
❌ Waking up to manipulative practices designed to sell products/services
Phew, not gonna lie there may some triggering discussion in this episode my guest Lucy Rowett approaches this topic in a highly sensitive way. So you're in safe hands.
....but if you're the kind of person in their midlife who is ready to do some deconstruction, then this episode is for you.

88 Overcoming Obstacles with Julie Angel
Julie Angel, who has a PHD in Cine Parkour, explained to me that ageing sets in when we stop playing, and parkour is the ultimate in child's play.
Remember when you were 7 and you threw yourself behind the sofa to avoid being caught in a game of hide and seek or you flung yourself across those monkey bars to avoid being tagged by your sister?
Like, why did we stop all of that?
Julie says that "your body is your biography." And she can tell just by looking at you, what you do the most of. Sitting... yup. Hunching.... yup. Starting at your phone.... yup.
When our range of movement becomes limited, so does our thinking.
With all the 'new year, new you' hype, I thought it would be lovely to bring you this episode to inspire you about exciting ways to move your body and open up your mind.
We discuss:
🕺🏽360 degree movement - why Parkour keeps us young
🕺🏽Deliberately inviting challenge
🕺🏽A thousand mindful reps vs 10 reps in the gym
🕺🏽Imagination knows no age limits
🕺🏽You get good at what you do
🕺🏽How being relaxed makes you stronger
🕺🏽How training in inefficient environments makes you stronger
🕺🏽What is a movement culture and how can we use it to our advantage
🕺🏽Why movement variety is just as important as nutritional variety
🕺🏽Expanding into the possibilities of your range of movement
🕺🏽Why mindset MUST involve the body too
🕺🏽Finding joy in ATTEMPTING to do the movement you cannot do
🕺🏽Cinema, parkour and menopause - it's all connected via creativity
I absolutely loved recording this episode, it was a thrill to connect with this vibrant and beautiful human - My mind expanded so much talking to her. I hope yours does too.

90 Making Sense of Menopause with Susan Willson
"Menopause is not something to be fixed, it's an experience" said Susan.
I often wonder if much of the menopause misery we see is down to the fact that the deeper meaning of menopause is not truthfully being shared.
Slapping on a bit of HRT might help short term, but if that's all we're focused on, we're missing out on the true gold of the whole experience.
Symptoms doesn't mean your body is breaking, symptoms are often your body trying to bring itself back into balance. Question is, will you help your body get what it's asking for? Rest - nutrition - sleep - kinder inner dialogue - rolling with change - identity liberation
In today's conversation with Susan Willson author of Making Sense of Menopause, we tap into these following topics:
➡️ Menopause symptoms are not an indication of illness
➡️ Menopause is not a pathology
➡️ The biological arc of a woman's life (aka the continuum)
➡️ The metamorphosis
➡️ Deepening our authentic connection
➡️ The advantage of a little extra weight
➡️ When the veil of oestrogen lifts
➡️ Finding your otherness
➡️ The power of the elder woman
➡️ Why we have lost touch with our bodies
➡️ How the hormones get prioritised when we are stressed
➡️ Circadian rhythms and energy conservation
➡️ Deep sea change
So if you're ready to get some softness (this conversation is lovely and soft), some clarity and a very different way of looking at menopause, this episode is for you.
