Step into the Lorin-Cory-Isley branch of the Lincoln, Nebraska library system on a delightful Saturday morning, and you'll encounter our next guest, Alania. Adopted at a young age, she was swiftly welcomed into the warm embrace of her new home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Her father's transition from a police officer to a FedEx delivery driver added a unique twist to their rural life, as his deliveries took him on fascinating journeys through the countryside, far different from the bustling streets of New York City.

In the heart of their home, Alania's mother embodied the role of a devoted stay-at-home mom. Church played a central part in their lives, with numerous events and activities revolving around their faith. Alania had an older brother and eventually had the opportunity to meet her birth parents. Among her birth parents, she formed the strongest connection with her birth father. Lucky to have two fathers in her life, Alania cherishes the profound relationships she shares with both.

However, Alania's early childhood was marred by significant trauma between the ages of 3 and 6. These experiences left a lasting impact, leading to self-harm behaviors. Eventually, she was placed in group homes, where she endured even greater trauma. The irony of it all was that her parents, who loved her deeply, stood by her side throughout her challenging journey, despite the unexplainable nature of her trauma-related behavior.

At the age of 18, Alania left home and, despite having abstained from alcohol and drugs, decided to attend a party one night. Tragically, she was given a date rape drug and fell victim to sexual assault. This harrowing experience plunged her into a downward spiral of substance abuse. In the depths of her despair, she tragically and painfully delivered her deceased fetus alone, a moment that forever marked her soul.

In her early twenties, Alania found herself pregnant again and entered into a marriage with a veteran. They welcomed two children together. However, her husband's battle with PTSD and alcoholism eventually led to their divorce. Despite the heartbreak, Alania found love and happiness in her third marriage. Embracing the Mormon faith, she and her new family became members of the LDS Church. Her mother-in-law became a shining example of a faith-led life, providing Alania with hope and a role model to emulate. The enduring love of her parents further bolstered her spirits.

Alania's story is one of complexity and hardship, yet her indomitable spirit, her unwavering determination to be the best version of herself for her children, her husband, and the world, shines through. Join us as we navigate through The Jar and bear witness to the incredible journey of Alania. Prepare to be moved, inspired, and reminded of the resilience of the human spirit.

Venturing into the grand halls of the Topeka Public Library on a Tuesday afternoon, we encounter our next guest, Wulf Roby. The library exudes an air of wisdom and knowledge, with its vast collection of books and meticulously designed AV room where we gather for our conversation. Wulf's vibrant presence is immediately apparent, accentuated by a bold red sweater that mirrors their personality.

Hailing from rural Oklahoma, a small town that nurtured their early years, Wulf recently made the decision to relocate to Topeka in pursuit of love and marriage. As a dedicated member of the state library system, Wulf plays a vital role in overseeing and coordinating the operations of libraries across various cities—a noble endeavor that allows them to support and uplift communities through literature and educational resources.

The tapestry of Wulf's early life is woven with intriguing complexities. Growing up, their mother was uncertain about their biological father, leaving behind a trail of potential suspects. However, Wulf fondly recognizes the person they refer to as Dad, who stepped into the role of a loving and supportive parent, nurturing Wulf and their siblings. In contrast, the relationship with their biological brothers and sisters remains strained, highlighting the intricate dynamics of family dynamics and the intricate dance of human connections.

In a twist both intriguing and poignant, Wulf found themselves married at the tender age of 16, a circumstance that offered little choice. Out of this unexpected union, two sons were born, forever etching a chapter in Wulf's life story. With candor and vulnerability, they navigate the complexities of their journey, exploring the intersection of love, responsibility, and personal growth.

Wulf's passion for advocating for animals and the LGBTQ+ community shines through their endeavors. They share captivating stories of their advocacy work, including the courageous act of establishing a pride chapter in their small Oklahoma town. Their commitment to fostering inclusivity and acceptance in the face of adversity serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to embrace their true selves and fight for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities.

In a heartwarming and slightly unconventional twist, Wulf recounts their experience of assisting in the delivery of puppies, a tale that encapsulates their compassionate spirit and connection with the animal kingdom. Through their stories, Wulf invites us into their world, painting vivid pictures that elicit laughter, introspection, and a deep appreciation for the beauty found in the simplest of moments.

Join us as Wulf fearlessly embraces The Jar, diving headfirst into the depths of their unique life experiences, hopes, dreams, and everything in between. Through the sharing of their extraordinary journey, we are reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of compassion in creating a more inclusive and understanding world. We had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Karen Golightly, at her super cool little home on the edges of Memphis. Her home has a warm and vibrant atmosphere, with art taking over the walls, cool furniture, and an array of 100 small pots, succulents, and trinkets of art on her porch wall. We set up the jar on her kitchen table, which looked like it had been around for over a hundred years.

Karen was born in Mobile, Alabama, and she has that Delta southern accent that she can turn on and off at will. She has one brother named Rusty, who is a lawyer and still practices. He was also her sports coach for all of her sports growing up, and while she looks back fondly on her memories of Mobile, she had the desire to get out of the small town. We laughed as she shared that she didn't have any Chinese food until she was 17. She ended up in Memphis for school and then started a journey of fun and education that brought her to Australia, Europe, and ultimately achieving her doctoral degree, before finding her way back to Memphis. Along the way, she even became an author.

Karen talked about the one that got away, who in the end turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and how this is so often the lesson in life. She shares her story about starting "Paint Memphis" with four other people more than 10 years ago, and the fun and learning around that, and what it's like to have an art nonprofit and have fun turn of events. She knows one of our guests from New York, Mr. Renda Writer. We were fascinated by Karen's story and her positive outlook on life. She shared her life mantra, which she got from her father, "shoot your shot" and have no regrets. It's a great reminder to take risks and go after what you want in life. Join us as Karen shares her life journey, navigating through the jar, and providing insights and advice that we can all benefit from.

Growing up with two sisters, a brother, and his parents, Todd spent a significant amount of time in Southern California during his childhood. He always had a creative side, a desire to be the center of attention, and a knack for making people smile. It was in high school that Todd discovered his passion for rapping, which served as his introduction to the world of entertainment.

His songwriting skills developed from his love for poetry, and he shares how he had to adapt his writing style to suit the musical realm. We had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Deavon Smith-Collins, in her cozy home in North Little Rock. Growing up, it was just her and her mom, and her grandparents in a small town in Arkansas. As her mom worked hard to provide for her, they moved around quite a bit, and Deavon attended Christian schools in Little Rock and Fayetteville. While she learned a lot in these schools, she also realized there was a lot that needed to be unlearned, and she strives to be the kind of adult that she wished she had in her life growing up. Some of her biggest heroes were teachers, and now she finds herself in the same profession as an art teacher in a local school for the last few years.

During our conversation, Deavon opened up about her experience of being sexually assaulted in college. She shared that she only recently began to unpack and come to grips with the impact it had on her and her family. It has been a difficult journey, but she hopes that by coming out and sharing her story, she can inspire others to have the courage to speak out as well. It's an interesting time in Deavon's life, as she and her mom are facing new challenges. Her mother is returning home to take care of her grandmother, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, and Deavon is leaving Little Rock soon to follow her heart and chase love.

Deavon also shared that the hardest part of her journey has been saying goodbye to her fourth-grade students, who welcomed her as their art teacher since kindergarten. Saying goodbye to them was the most painful part of her journey so far. Join us on The Jar as Deavon navigates through her story and shares her experiences, hopes, and dreams.
