The FastingWell Podcast

The FastingWell Podcast

Ben Tanner, PA-C

Learn how you can use intermittent fasting to improve your physical and mental health, so you can feel better, live longer, and (potentially) reverse chronic disease. Ben Tanner, PA-C explains the science and benefits of fasting in basic terms you can understand. He also shares tips and tricks to help you effectively implement fasting into your lifestyle as painlessly as possible. The show covers basic physiology about how fasting works, and step-by-step advice on how to get started with intermittent fasting (also known as time-restricted eating), or extended fasting (multiple days). You’ll also learn about specific health benefits of different types of fasting, so you can choose the best regimen for your needs. In particular, fasting can be beneficial for people with high blood sugar or high insulin (like type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or PCOS), high blood pressure, or obesity. It can also benefit people who want to prevent chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, dementia (like Alzheimer's), cancer, or others. (Name = "FastingWell", or "Fasting Well".) Subscribe today!

The FastingWell Podcast - 6: Who Should Fast, and Who Shouldn’t? [No + Maybe + Yes]
play

10/28/21 • 21 min

Today I walk you through my perspective about who should or shouldn’t be fasting.

I explain 3 groups: Those who should NOT fast, those who SHOULD fast, and those who fall somewhere in between -- the “maybe” group. The first group is easy to explain, but the 2nd and 3rd groups have a lot more nuance, and take a bit longer.
Overall, the vast majority of people fall into the group who would very likely benefit from intermittent fasting (or any type of fasting).

Gin Stephens is a prolific author of several books about intermittent fasting, including the best-seller “Fast. Feast. Repeat.” She also has a podcast, a blog, and a thriving fasting community. Today she was kind enough to join me for a far-ranging discussion about intermittent fasting. Unfortunately, there was a technical glitch and my voice sounds fuzzy. But when Gin is talking the audio is just fine, so feel free to focus on those sections. Timestamps are below so you can easily jump to specific topics!

Intermittent fasting and extended fasting are both easier when you eat the right kind of food beforehand. It prepares your body and helps you get a smooth start, and ultimately makes it easier to get all the way through your fast. Today I’ll explain what types of food I recommend eating before a short fast (like daily time-restricted eating), or a long fast (such as 24 hours or more).

This summary will help you understand why much of what you've heard about salt may be wrong, where the salt restriction guidelines came from, why it's better and healthier to eat all the salt you crave (at least for most people), and some specific ideas about how to put this info in practice.
