The FastingWell Podcast

The FastingWell Podcast

Ben Tanner, PA-C

Learn how you can use intermittent fasting to improve your physical and mental health, so you can feel better, live longer, and (potentially) reverse chronic disease. Ben Tanner, PA-C explains the science and benefits of fasting in basic terms you can understand. He also shares tips and tricks to help you effectively implement fasting into your lifestyle as painlessly as possible. The show covers basic physiology about how fasting works, and step-by-step advice on how to get started with intermittent fasting (also known as time-restricted eating), or extended fasting (multiple days). You’ll also learn about specific health benefits of different types of fasting, so you can choose the best regimen for your needs. In particular, fasting can be beneficial for people with high blood sugar or high insulin (like type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or PCOS), high blood pressure, or obesity. It can also benefit people who want to prevent chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, dementia (like Alzheimer's), cancer, or others. (Name = "FastingWell", or "Fasting Well".) Subscribe today!

The FastingWell Podcast - 6: Who Should Fast, and Who Shouldn’t? [No + Maybe + Yes]
play

10/28/21 • 21 min

Today I walk you through my perspective about who should or shouldn’t be fasting.

I explain 3 groups: Those who should NOT fast, those who SHOULD fast, and those who fall somewhere in between -- the “maybe” group. The first group is easy to explain, but the 2nd and 3rd groups have a lot more nuance, and take a bit longer.
Overall, the vast majority of people fall into the group who would very likely benefit from intermittent fasting (or any type of fasting).

The FastingWell Podcast - 13: The Beauty of Dirty Fasting (pros/cons + how to do it)
play

12/14/21 • 26 min

Today I explain the difference between “clean fasting” and “dirty fasting” (aka modified fasting). That includes the pros & cons of each type, as well as how to do a dirty or modified fast. I also share 2 stories about prolonged fasts I’ve done to illustrate some of the key points.
The bottom line? Dirty fasting is a great option for most beginners because it's more flexible, easier to do, but still gives you most of the health benefits you're probably looking for (like improved blood sugar, better insulin sensitivity, or fat loss, to name a few).

Kidney disease is common, and often leads to kidney failure. Once you have kidney failure, you're at a higher risk of a bunch of other health problems, and ultimately a much higher risk of death. The bad news is kidney failure is not usually reversible. The good news? Kidney failure is easily preventable in most cases, by fixing the underlying problems (like high blood sugar, and high blood pressure). Today I'll explain what causes kidney failure, and how you can prevent it through intermittent fasting, eating low carb, and other healthy lifestyle changes.
