Faith, Family and Medications: How We Handled a Difficult Diagnosis in the Family Business | S3 E24
06/22/22 • 38 min
3 Listeners
In this episode, Mary Alessi and her daughter Lauren tell their story of receiving a life-altering diagnosis in Lauren's teen years, how their decision on whether to use medications affected their family, and how they moved forward to give Lauren the best chance at a fulfilled and happy life.
When a child gets a scary diagnosis from a doctor, fear can overwhelm a parent. It's then that parents face a hard choice - whether to place their children on medications that may affect their lives in unknown ways.
Christians especially often have opposing views when it comes to faith, family and medicine, and The Alessis had to navigate these same issues as a family when both Lauren and her sister Gabrielle were diagnosed with epilepsy in their teens.
You'll discover how to keep an open mind, and how to make the best choices for your family when you face a difficult diagnosis.

A Father's Journey: How to Lead Your Family with Love (Even When Life Hurts) w/ Jonathan Pitts | S3 E23
What does it take to be a dad who leads his family well - even when life doesn't go according to plan?
For author, speaker, and pastor Jonathan Pitts, it means relying on God to provide the path forward for his family as he learns from the highs and lows of fatherhood.
In this episode, Jonathan joins Steve Alessi at The Family Business table to share his powerful story of love, loss and renewal. Despite losing his wife Wynter suddenly in 2018, he has continued to guide his four daughters to love God and serve others with the same generous spirit their mother possessed .
Jonathan Pitts is an author, speaker, ministry executive and pastor at Church of the City in Franklin, Tennessee. For more than 15 years Jonathan has served in executive leadership roles in Christian media, entertainment and the Church including Executive Pastor at Church of the City, Executive Director at Dr. Tony Evans’ The Urban Alternative, manager to recording artist Anthony Evans, Jr., and current President of For Girls Like You Ministries, a ministry to tween girls and their parents that includes a magazine, books and other resources.
Jonathan recently authored My Wynter Season: Seeing God’s Faithfulness in the Shadow of Grief, a memoir that recaps his journey seeing God’s kindness through the loss of his late wife, Wynter Pitts. Jonathan co-founded For Girls Like You and co-authored two books with Wynter prior to her sudden passing.
The father of four beautiful daughters, Alena (17), Kaitlyn (15), Camryn and Olivia (12), Jonathan is newly married to Peta Sergeant, and he continues to see God’s kindness unfolding in his life.
