Based in Philadelphia, Maya Nazareth is an entrepreneur on a mission to help other women reclaim their inner ferocity through the power of martial arts. Named to Philadelphia's 20 under 25 list at just 22 years old; Maya founded her first company Alchemize Fightwear at 20 as a student at the University of Delaware (2019). After training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 3 years, Maya couldn’t find any gear that fit her body or made her feel confident. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is 80% men and the gear is made for men. So she made gear for women.

In this episode, I chat with high level black belt competitor Alex Enriquez. We discuss her BJJ journey and how she believes BJJ has evolved over the years, as well as her preparation methods for preparing for competition, how to make a smooth transition to a new academy, and how she has curated her life to pursue her BJJ goals.

ABOUT ALEX:

Alex Enriquez started BJJ at KnuckleUp Fitness at the age of 11 (circa 2010) under Steve Mitchell and began wrestling at Cambridge high school (4 years) under Don St. James. She continued in college for 2 more seasons under Christian and Ashley Flavin and graduated with an exercise science degree at Life University in 2021. She received black belt under Bruno Frazatto and Nathan Hadley in December of 2021 after making the switch to Atos Atlanta in late 2020. She started strength training and lifting under Monique Travis at the age of 14. She’s been teaching BJJ and kickboxing classes since 16 years old.

Some of her accomplishments include:

  • Multiple Gi and No Gi IBJJF Pan American titles (orange, purple, and brown) in weight and open class
  • 2021 IBJJF No Gi Worlds Title (brown)
  • IBJJF No Gi Pans Title (black)
  • IBJJF Gi Worlds Medalist (Blue, Brown)
  • 2021 ADCC East Coast Trials Runner-Up (-60kg)
  • 3x GA Girl’s Folkstyle State Champion, 3x High School Folkstyle (USAW) and Freestyle (Fargo) All-American, and 2020 WCWA All-American

Her goals include winning multiple black belt world titles (gi and no gi), an ADCC title, and becoming a notable jiu jitsu coach/instructor that helps guide you to achieve your fitness and sport goals.

About Laurien:

Laurien Zurhake was born in the Netherlands. She studied history and archaeology in the Netherlands and at Oxford University. She moved to Germany to pursue her PhD on Pain Behavior. There, she met her now husband on the BJJ mats with whom she has now her own yoga and martial arts academy. Having experienced PTSD due to sexual assault, she started training BJJ and yoga, later with the aim to make the martial arts and yoga mats a safer space for all through trauma-informed coaching - thus, the birth of Off The Zone.

In this episode I interview Conor Millstein, Founder of IsoMovement Systems. In just 60 minutes, Conor shares his inspirational story of how he created his company as a result of his own healing, health and fitness journey. Being a candidate for a hip replacement at just 24 years old, Conor was empowered to look to holistic solutions to heal himself from the inside out.
