The Edge of the Sticker - Wayne Shorter and Allowing Yourself to Experience Life

Wayne Shorter and Allowing Yourself to Experience Life

03/03/23 • 27 min

The Edge of the Sticker

The maestro Wayne Shorter passed away yesterday. He was a monumental musician, a masterful improvisor and a fixture on the jazz scene for more than half a century. Shorter was known for a free form of improvisation and a complete disregard for risk on the stage. He was fearless and brilliant.
I (Bobby) never saw him play, even though I had the chance a few years ago. It was a decision I regretted then and, even more so, now. His death promoted this discussion about allowing ourselves the opportunity to experience life, to break our routines and actually do the things we think about doing.
If you want to check out Wayne Shorter's music, take some time and listen to Speak No Evil, Juju or Without a Net. Also, check out the song Endangered Species off the Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival album. It won this year's Grammy for best improvised jazz solo.

Opening Day and lessons from Baseball

This weekend marks the beginning of the college baseball season. It is also the beginning of the final chapter of nearly 2 decades as a baseball parent for Brad. We talk about what baseball's meant to Brad and his kids, why coaching matters, team dynamics and how to be a catalyst for change on the field, at work, in a band or anywhere else that you're with a team or a group.

Daylight savings time and routines

This episode was recorded on Sunday March 12, the first day of 2023 daylight savings time. It's amazing how much a one hour time change can upset your daily routine. We talk about that, some of the things we discussed and learned during a react speaking event in Milwaukee, and think back to the Bugs Bunny episode Bugs' Bonnets (the one where each character's personality changes when different hats land on their heads.)
Next week we'll have a special guest join us on the podcast. Reggie D. Ford. Reggie is a motivational speaker and best selling author of PTSD: Perseverance Through Severe Dysfunction. Reggie’s mission is to help people build mental resilience and lead fulfilling lives through life’s challenges. We're looking forward to the discussion.
