The Edge of the Sticker

The Edge of the Sticker

Brad Frank and Bobby Frank

You know that feeling when you’re trying to peel off a sticker? You can’t just grab it from the middle and pull. No, you have to get your fingernail underneath an edge but once you have it, you can gently remove it. This podcast is about getting an edge on the emotional issues all of us face. It’s casual, a little funny and filled with good advice that comes mostly from Brad Frank, a psychologist in Houston, but sometimes from Bobby Frank, a musician and writer in Nashville.

The Edge of the Sticker - Wayne Shorter and Allowing Yourself to Experience Life
play

03/03/23 • 27 min

The maestro Wayne Shorter passed away yesterday. He was a monumental musician, a masterful improvisor and a fixture on the jazz scene for more than half a century. Shorter was known for a free form of improvisation and a complete disregard for risk on the stage. He was fearless and brilliant.
I (Bobby) never saw him play, even though I had the chance a few years ago. It was a decision I regretted then and, even more so, now. His death promoted this discussion about allowing ourselves the opportunity to experience life, to break our routines and actually do the things we think about doing.
If you want to check out Wayne Shorter's music, take some time and listen to Speak No Evil, Juju or Without a Net. Also, check out the song Endangered Species off the Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival album. It won this year's Grammy for best improvised jazz solo.

The Edge of the Sticker - Emotional Loans -- Part 1

Emotional Loans -- Part 1

The Edge of the Sticker

play

10/18/22 • 28 min

In this episode, we discuss the idea of an emotional loan. Emotional loans happen when you hold onto things instead of dealing with them in real time. Maybe you weren't completely honest in your words or actions, or you agreed to something just to avoid a conflict. While your initial reaction might be "whew, I really dodged that bullet," over time you may start to feel angry, resentful or unhappy because of what happened days, weeks, months or years before. Those emotions are the interest on your loan and it can be really difficult to make the payments. Brad talks about why it's better to pay with cash, how to start the process of paying off your loans, and how to find help if you need some.
This is first of two parts. Part 2 will be posted next week.

Happy New Year! It's with great anticipation that we unveil our words of the year. This is a tradition that started way back in 2023 on the Edge of the Sticker podcast, though it has much deeper roots than that. The WOTY is not a new year's resolution. It's more like a personal mission statement. Like setting an expectation or a standard for how we live our lives and the way we envision the year unfolding.
Did you pick a WOTY? Leave a comment or send us a message if you'd like to share.
