How Our Perspective Influences Everything (Dr. Carly Hunt)

The Coaching Lab: Health, Wellness & Performance! (Brad Cooper, PhD)

Don’t you just hate it when you don’t get a decent sleep? It seemingly throws off everything and ruins the day before it even gets started. And yes, the data appears to back that up. Sleep loss has been shown to increase inflammatory markers throughout the body. But wait a minute. What if there’s another layer to the discussion (and the data analysis)? What if a positive approach to life, something called trait positive affect (or PA) in the literature changes the equation? What if the way we look at that loss of sleep (and other things in life). Could our mental state buffer the proinflammatory effects of various forms of stress?

Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Carly Hunt. Dr. Hunt is a licensed psychologist, has a PhD in Counseling Psychology and a Masters in Kinesiology and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biobehavior pain research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is the founder of Present Mind Consulting and we discovered her when our son Joshua, who’s currently in med school with a special interest in sleep medicine, came across her research on the influence of affect on sleep loss. The Conflict Opportunity: Best-selling author Amanda Ripley

Us vs. Them. The “other side” just doesn’t get it. Whether politics, work or even family, the confusion arises because we aren’t seeing how the conflict itself has taken over. High conflict is the invisible hand of our time, creating a good vs. evil type of feud. And it results in our brains behaving differently, crystalizing certainty in our own superiority and a head-shaking about those on the other side.

Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Amanda Ripley, a New York Times bestselling author, an investigative journalist and co-founder of Good Conflict, a company that creates workshops and original content to help people get smarter about how they fight. Amanda’s most recent book is High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out. For tools everyone can use right now, check out Amanda's free resources at www.TheGoodConflict.com. Her latest book is High Conflict. And if anyone wants help digging into a specific challenge, reach out to her at her weekly Slate podcast How To!

Hungry Brain: How to Rewire Our Food Choices (Dr. Stephan Guyenet)

"I'd do anything to be healthy, except eat right and exercise." We laugh when the comedian shares this insight from the stage, but then cringe when we realize the truth of that in our own lives and the lives of those around us. What is going on? Intriguingly, our brains are finely tuned based on a world that for most – no longer exists. Extremely palatable foods combining sugar, salt, fat and the like didn’t exist until recently in human history. As such, instincts designed to prevent starvation have carried us into a lifetime of obesity, diabetes and more. So what can we do?

Welcome to the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is neuroscientist and best-selling author of The Hungry Brain, Dr. Stephan Guyenet. He has a bachelors degree in biochemistry, a PhD in neuroscience and completed a post-doctoral fellowship on the neuroscience of obesity and eating behavior. His research publications in scientific journals have been cited more than 2,100 times. He doesn’t simply identify the science behind why we do what we do. Instead, he provides key insights on how we – or our friends, coaching clients and others - can effectively change course and thus change our lives for the better.
