Malcolm Gladwell: The Art of Self-Reinvention
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
11/17/21 • 63 min
Longevity and mastery over any creative profession require relentless passion, conscious steps to continually reinvent your swing, and a seriousness of purpose, which results from profound self-reflection and introspection.
World-renowned journalist and writer Malcolm Gladwell joins me to dig deep into building an everlasting career as a creative and what it takes to pursue it.
Malcolm is the author of five New York Times bestsellers — The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants and the Founder of Pushkin Industries, which explore all forms of audio art. He also hosts the Revisionist History podcast, which re-examines events, ideas, people, and objects from our past—and explains how they create our present.
In his upcoming intimate audio biography titled Miracle and Wonder, Malcolm collaborates with the legendary songwriter Paul Simon to explore lessons from the artist's life and career. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation with Simon and the Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the audiobook reflects Simon's inimitably gifted artistic bent and what it took for him to tap into it.
Here are some things you’ll discover in this episode:
- How to build the confidence to construct your intellectual life the way you want to
- How to overcome the “professed” to make way for the “practical.”
- Why creativity and craft knows no physical or geographical boundaries
- Why you need to be constantly evolving to build an evergreen career
- Why relentless perfectionism is key to creating intentional content
- Why you need to archive your experiences and lessons from the past to be inimitable at your craft
- The timeless worth of self-reflection: how to develop the willingness to be reflective about your life experiences
- Why you need to connect with your work on a more-than-objective level
Enjoy!

How to Build Confidence and Be More Social with Vanessa Van Edwards
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
03/02/22 • 63 min
Are there certain traits that make someone charismatic? Why do some people captivate a room, while others struggle to manage a small meeting? Why do some ideas spread, but other good ones fall by the wayside?
These are the questions that bestselling author and human behavior expert Vanessa Van Edwards seeks to answer in her new book, "Cues: Master the Secret Language of Charismatic Communication."
If we're often overlooked for job opportunities or have our ideas ignored, we should pay closer attention to the "tiny" signals we send to others through our body language, facial expressions, word choice, and vocal inflection.
Vanessa believes these "cues" have a huge impact on how we, and our ideas, come across and can either undermine or reinforce our message.
In today's episode, I talk with her about her book—and how we can convey likeability, trust, and power in every interaction.
Over 54 million people have seen Vanessa on YouTube and in her viral TED Talk. Her behavior research lab, Science of People, has been featured on Fast Company, Inc., USA Today, CNN, CBS, and Entrepreneur Magazine.
Here are some highlights from our conversation:
- When we meet someone, over 80% of our judgments are based on two traits: warmth and competence.
- The faster we can answer the following questions, the faster we can connect with people: Can I trust you? Can I rely on you?
- Even in the virtual world, we can communicate effectively and give and receive social cues.
- Myth: cues are less important on a video call.
- Pro tip: Stand more than 18 inches away from the camera in an online meeting to avoid appearing to invade participants' intimate space. This helps others trust us more easily and see more cues, especially gestures, which is important because people use gestures to get additional information.

How to Say No to Protect Your Time with Jason Fried
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
01/19/22 • 113 min
With so much information, and gadgets and access and hustle and email and ...and.. aren’t you overloaded at work!? It’s understandable and it’s a real problem. If this describes you or someone you love...you’ll LOVE this episode of the show.
Enter: Jason Fried. He’s the brilliant NYT best-selling author and co-founder of the software firm, Basecamp. Since long before meeting Jason in person he’s always caught my eye as perhaps THE outspoken thinker / critic of the current status of work, our unhealthy habits around our jobs, and our addictions to busy-making. Whether it’s the toxic hustle, the grow-at-all-cost mentality, or the idea of working your fingers to the bone...Jason helps us all see why 99% of this approach is rubbish. And within 3 minutes of meeting him / listening to this episode, I’m banking you’ll be in agreement with him.
The one refreshing difference with Jason? He also gives us a roadmap to fix what we’ve broken. In this episode we talk about his latest book (co-authored with previous CJLIVE podcast guest David Heinemeier Hansson) called It Doesn’t Have to be Crazy at Work, which lays out a play-by-play on how to avoid all exhaustion, stress, and burnout and how to find tools for reshaping success, habits, trust, self care, and gaining that much-needed fresh perspective.
In this episode, we cover
- How hard work and hours are not the same thing. In fact, long hours leads to burn out.
- Why instant communication (slack, messenger, text etc) is making us slaves to our devices, less effective, and spending more time on the conveyor belt of information consumption than doing any real work.
- Some insights and strategies for regaining control over our screen time, our sleep patterns, and where we put our our attention.
- A re-framing of our always-busy culture around the JOYS of missing out. Not FOMO...we’re talking JOMO.
- Why regaining control of our time starts with learning how to say no.
- ...and that’s all in the first 10 minutes. Just kidding but you get the point. This episode of the podcast is chock full of inspired virtues for reclaiming our spirit, doing GREAT work and loving life in the process.
Enjoy!

The Epidemic of Never Enough
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
12/20/21 • 30 min
It’s easy to lose sight of what you have when you’re immersed in a world telling you that you need more. Turn on the TV during any commercial break and you’ll most likely observe a business suggesting that you need something new in order to be better. It can be a challenge to feel satisfied with what you have when you’re constantly surrounded by these unsolicited proposals from companies. It’s no wonder so many of us are impacted by the epidemic of “never enough.”
While progress should always be embraced, there is a difference between striving to be better and feeling like you’re never enough.
I’ve found that there are two key changes you can make to shift your perspective away from the “never enough.” First, loving the process- you are far more likely to persevere through the challenges on your way to mastery if you love the process. And second, gratitude. We get into this and more on todays episode.
Highlights:
[00:05] Intro and reflection
[01:05] The epidemic of never enough
[07:00] My personal experiences with this concept
[16:02] Discussion on the changes we can make to our mindset to quiet the feeling of never enough
[19:22] An in-depth discussion of how eastern traditions combat the never enough concept
[21:13] Reflection on the issue of the never enough epidemic and it’s solutions
[23:05] Some insight from Steve Jobs
[26:00] Closing thoughts and reflection prompts
[28:13] Conclusion
Enjoy!

Living Shouldn't Hurt with Aaron Alexander
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
01/12/22 • 83 min
What do you think of when you hear the word fitness? Going to the gym? Going for a run? Yoga? For most of us, fitness is something that we do. We block off an hour or two during the day to focus on our physical health. We get our sweat session in, but then what?
On the show this week, we are joined by Aaron Alexander. Aaron is a manual therapist and movement coach, as well as an author (The Align Method), and host of the Align Podcast. Aaron’s message is clear. Fitness is not what you do - it’s who you are.
On today's show we talk about:
- Our bodies are under construction 100% of the time.
- Chronic pain is a huge issue in the US and other Western nations.
- The main differentiator between us and one of the healthiest populations in the world is not in the way we work out, but in the way we rest.
- The importance of setting up your work and living environment
- Using sleep and nature as weapons
And a lot more. Enjoy!

Mel Robbins: Powerful Habits to Ease Anxiety & Boost Productivity
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
12/01/21 • 77 min
How’s your nervous system doing as we enter the final month of 2021? It’s been one heck of a ride for most of us, and tensions are at an all-time high with the ongoing pandemic, the “great resignation,” and skyrocketing prices in stores, online, and at gas pumps. If there were ever a time to have a sit down with the great behavior change expert Mel Robbins, it’s now.
I first interviewed Mel four years ago when her book The 5 Second Rule hit the bestseller’s list. She’s now celebrating another book, The High 5 Habit, and I had the pleasure of getting her analysis of where this crazy world is heading. If you’re in a state of overwhelm with chronic anxiety, stress, and fear, you don’t want to miss what she says we should all be doing right now.
Hint: It’s not anxiously waiting to see what madness will fall on us next!
Mel comes through with some powerful advice on calming our nervous systems and easing anxiety even when there’s so much to justify chronic stress. From setting yourself up for greater creativity and productivity with the right morning routine to a simple mantra that could change your mindset, Mel’s wisdom is just what we all need to hear as we head into a new year.
Enjoy!

A Love Letter to Human Potential with Kate Robinson
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
03/09/22 • 56 min
Kate Robinson is a writer, speaker, and co- founder of a number of initiatives dedicated to the legacy of her father, Sir Ken Robinson. On the show, Kate shares some backstory on her father’s life, and the journey that led to her completing his final piece of work. In Sir Ken and Kate’s perspectives, there are 3 myths regarding creativity that hinder our advancement as a collective.
- Creativity is about a certain group of people, “the creatives”
- Creativity is about certain things/subjects (music, writing, art, dance, etc)
- You’re either creative or you’re not
The truth is, creativity lives in each of us, it is a muscle that can be trained and strengthened, and there is space for creativity in every activity. Sir Ken and Kate define creativity as “the process of having original ideas that have value.” It is an ongoing process of idea creation and evaluation, and it can be applied to anything.
True change comes from those who dare to imagine. Creativity comes from within, and progress comes from diversity of thought. Identify your passion, tap into your creativity, and encourage others to do the same.
Enjoy!

Transform Your Mind in 12 Minutes a Day with Dr. Amishi Jha
The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show
12/08/21 • 78 min
Do you have 12 minutes a day?
That’s all that my guest asks of you to make your life more fulfilled. I was super excited to have Dr. Amishi Jha on the show because she provides a detailed how-to in her extraordinary book Peak Mind. This bestseller is a brilliant guide to train our attention with mindful awareness and maximize our human potential.
Meditation, mindfulness, and attention are personal passions of mine. My wife is a meditation, mindfulness, and attention teacher and I’ve found some of the most profound growth through these practices.
Today, Amishi is part of a new scientific field, contemplative neuroscience. Her pioneering work on mindfulness and attention is currently in use by organizations like the U.S. military and New Zealand Defense Force, professional sports teams, medical schools, and businesses.
Her book is incredible—it is very practical and provides a training recipe for 12 minutes every day. I’m such a believer in everything Amishi espouses because it’s what I want. It’s available to all of us. Can you fit this into your life for 12 minutes a day?
Enjoy!
