Startup Calgary Podcast

The best way to learn about the startup journey is to hear it first-hand from those who have experienced it. Listen to our “Startup Story” episodes to hear from local founders who are growing their companies right here in Calgary.

Interview date: December 17, 2019

Featured Startup: Ivonne Gamboa, President & CEO at Goat Generation

Ivonne Gamboa is originally from Ecuador and since she was little she was always challenging the "status quo" which is why she decided to study civil engineering a "not so popular" career for a woman 19 years ago in Quito. She founded an engineering consulting firm in Ecuador in 2001 with her sister which has been operating for 18 years. Ivonne emigrated to Canada 13 years ago and fell in love with this great country.

Ivonne and team recently developed an app called GOAT which aims to reduce food waste by enabling businesses and households to connect buyers with their surplus food. GOAT was started from a personal story, when Ivonne and her family didn't realize how much food they were wasting. When family members moved from South America and asked if they could take their extra food they realized some families weren't as lucky as them and may be struggling to find affordable meals. GOAT connects food businesses or households with surplus food for families looking for great meals at an affordable or free price point with the goal of helping communities and protecting the environment by reducing food waste.

#11 Benny Giang, Founding Team Member at CryptoKitties

Benny Giang, Founding Team Member at CryptoKitties, shares what’s next in product management & blockchain. CryptoKitties is one of Canada’s fastest growing blockchain companies co-launched out of the Axiom Zen venture studio November 2017.

Interview date: December 20, 2019

Featured Speaker:

Benny Giang is a founding team member of CryptoKitties and a Growth Product Manager at Dapper Labs. He has a background in psychology, user experience design and product marketing. He has worked on a wide range of startups including Lightship Works (industrial IOT), Toby (knowledge management platform), and Upright AI (AI for sales reps). In 2017 he co-created Toby, a Chrome extension that received awards from Product Hunt and the Google Chrome store. Toby was accepted into Y Combinator's Startup School and was one of the top startups within the cohort.

Benny has been fascinated by cryptocurrencies since early 2016 and was an early supporter of Ethereum. He formally transitioned from working on Upright AI to blockchain products because he saw first-hand how people didn't have control of their own personal data specifically in the sales lead generation business. Benny played a pivotal role in launching CryptoKitties during its infancy to its current global success. He is exploring the intersection of cryptography, games, and art; all of which extend the interactivity of digital assets using smart contracts.

Currently, he is leading the charge in expanding the imagination of non fungible digital assets to the world.

About CryptoKitties:

In CryptoKitties, users collect and breed oh-so-adorable creatures that we call CryptoKitties! Each kitty has a unique genome that defines its appearance and traits. Players can breed their kitties to create new furry friends and unlock rare cattributes.

CryptoKitties is one of the world’s first blockchain games. ‘Blockchain’ is the technology that makes things like Bitcoin possible. While CryptoKitties isn’t a digital currency, it does offer the same security: each CryptoKitty is one-of-a-kind and 100% owned by you. It cannot be replicated, taken away, or destroyed.
