Could you have an autistic kid and not know even know?
01/12/22 • 28 min
Yup, totally. In episode 51 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about how you could have an autistic kid and not even know. Why me and my hubby totally missed the signs with our special needs child.
I mean Wonderboy is fun, social, loves to hug, looks you in the eye... no way he could be autistic right? We also had no problems at home. Let me repeat that: No problem at home. And with the movie Rain Man as our only reference to autism we thought his teacher was bonkers when she even dared to suggest this.
So, how can you have an autistic kid without you realizing?
1. Forget about the movie Rain Man. For one autism comes in many forms and shapes. Like our Wonderboy they could be big huggers or behave in other ways that is not seen autistic.
2. Second, maybe your kid looks like you and therefore you know instinctively what your kid needs. Because you already have the systems in place for you. Like not much socializing in the weekend. A strict day-to-day routine..
3. I tell you some signs we did not perceive as a problem but were, come to think of it, a good indication there was something going on.
4. Some good news: we still to this day have very little problems at home. And that might be the case for you as well. Much has to do with how you handle the possible diagnosis. Hint: it has a lot to do with not seeing it as a problem (I know, that can be easier said than done).
Little did we know back then. How much we have learned since. And how proud we are today. I hope this podcast gives you some insights but will also take the fear away of a possible diagnosis and your kid’s future.
Stay sane & stay happy.

Why your autistic child might have a meltdown each Christmas - and how to prevent it
Ever wonder why your autistic child has a gigantic meltdown each and every Christmas? It might be that big pile of surprises underneath the Christmas tree! The lack of a normal routine, traveling, behaving (whatever that means), socializing... It’s already enough for any autistic kid to break down. Not to mention that creepy elf that suddenly pops up, moves every night (although you could swear it was a doll) and apparently watches your every move.
Now throw in a pile of gifts. Or as your kid sees them: surprises. Which he already can't handle in day to day situations... Surprises that turn out to be gifts you never asked for, you don’t like, you don’t know what to do with, yet you have to be grateful for. It’s simply just too much. Yay surprises. Not. It took me 14 years to realize this and have a meltdown free Christmas. I hope my insights help you and your autistic kid to have a wonderful - meltdown-free - Christmas.
In this episode I talk about:
- Why presents can lead to massive meltdowns
- How to prevent those meltdowns
- Other tips to help your kid and you enjoy Christmas celebrations
Stay sane 🧘 Stay happy 💃 and have a wonderful Christmas

The 10 things every child with autism wish you knew
In episode 52 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about the the 10 things every kid with autism wish you knew.
Surprisingly a lot of people don’t really know what autism is about. And with that have NO idea how to deal with someone with autism. Which can create a lot of problems on both sides. Problems that can be avoided.
Therefore wonderboy and I created this list of ten things every kid with autism wish you knew. 10 sneak peeks in their brains so to speak, to help you understand what’s going on in the mind of someone with autism.
We hope it helps you understand a person with autism better and with that support the wondergirl or wonderboy in your life the way they need to live life happy and to their fullest potential.
Wonderboy: ‘We don’t think outside the box. We think in a different shape.’
And there is nothing wrong with that.
Stay sane 🧘 Stay happy 💃
