In 1816 a mysterious couple appeared in Alexandria, Virginia and quickly isolated themselves in a room at Gadsby’s Tavern without a word to anyone but the tavern innkeeper. Speculation on their identities continues to this day, fueled by the eerie inscription on the woman’s tombstone: “To the memory of the Female Stranger...”
