In 1816 a mysterious couple appeared in Alexandria, Virginia and quickly isolated themselves in a room at Gadsby’s Tavern without a word to anyone but the tavern innkeeper. Speculation on their identities continues to this day, fueled by the eerie inscription on the woman’s tombstone: “To the memory of the Female Stranger...”

On his way from Louisiana to Washington, D.C., Meriwether Lewis arrived at Grinder’s Stand, an inn and tavern near Hohenwald, Tennessee, and secured rooms for the night. It was October 10, 1809.

It was the last night he would be alive.
