Establishing a System for your Sobriety with Jay Chase
Sober Yoga Girl
06/20/24 • 33 min
I loved recording this episode with Jay Chase. I had Jay on the show in 2022. In this episode, we connect and catch up. Jay is one of the most positive and uplifting people I've connected with on this story and I find his sober story inspirational (scroll back to the first episode we did together to hear it!) In this episode we talk about how his life has shifted in the last two years (including becoming a dad!) The context of "protecting your mindset" and one of his takeaways from the last year of developing a system. We speak about the role that faith plays in his life and his necessary self care practices to keep him well. Tune into this episode of Sober Yoga Girl Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts!

Leigh's Sober Journey
Sober Yoga Girl
07/29/21 • 42 min
Alex is super happy to have Leigh Saulnier on the show today! Leigh and Alex met over a year ago and Leigh has had a very active role in the Mindful Life Practice Community. Leigh started practicing daily yoga with the MLPC during the Coronavirus pandemic. Leigh had practiced off and on for many years before, but got more inspired to practice daily when she had to stop running due to arthritis. She has competed in the Ironman triathlon as well as many marathons in the past and felt a big void in my life when she was no longer marathon training.
Leigh recently retired from her job as an occupational therapist working with children with sensory processing disorders. She is currently doing the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training with the MLPC and hope to be able to start teaching yoga in the fall of 2021. Leigh enjoys all types of yoga practice and has especially enjoyed learning pranayama and meditation practices recently.
Leigh is alcohol free and has greatly benefitted from participating in the sober circles and connecting with the other folks in the community. It gives Leigh joy to build friendships with people all over the world. Her interests are ever changing but right now she loves knitting, gardening, cooking (and eating) vegan food, and reading books about antiracism and the environmental movement. Tune into this episode to hear more about Leigh's sober journey, how yoga has played a role, and where she sees her sober yoga journey going! Leigh hopes to start teaching yoga for The Mindful Life Practice in the fall. Catch her for classes at www.themindfullifepractice.com.

The Wolf You Feed with Sophie Aghdami
Sober Yoga Girl
07/22/21 • 44 min
In this episode Alex sits down with Sophie Aghdami. Sophie is in recovery from alcohol addiction and now helping others maintain longterm recovery as a coach. She is also a 200 hour trained yoga teacher. Sophie spent a long dark decade (plus some) in the depths of addiction. Successful on the outside in exciting jobs, Sophie was on her deathbed emotionally, spiritually and physically. After waking up one morning during a trip in Indonesia at yet another rock bottom (there were many), she looked in the mirror and didn’t recognise herself. A big, puffy, sad moon face stared back at her and her body was physically exhausted from the almighty relapse. She called a family member and was scooped up and ‘poured’ into a safehouse. That was the beginning of her recovery journey, which came with its inevitable ups and hard downs, but was also the start of a new life full of joy, meaning and purpose, free from past damaging patterns and behaviours. Sophie believes that the success of maintaining longterm recovery lies in our daily behaviours and mindset, and attributes her recovery to a variety of methods, including a holistic yoga practice, 12 step, self compassion and forgiveness to release shame, routine, goal setting and forward thinking, and finding her ‘kokorozashi’ - personal life purpose and mission. It's a lifelong, courageous practice that she is proud to be committed to.
Having grown up in Switzerland and the UK, Sophie now lives in Australia with her husky, Echo. She works as a brand strategist and, separately, as a recovery coach, both of which she loves.
Sophie can be found at: https://www.thewolfyoufeed.com . Alex can be found at www.themindfullifepractice.com.

What is Trauma Informed Yoga Teaching?
Sober Yoga Girl
07/05/21 • 24 min
Trigger warning: discussion of trauma. In this episode, Alex explains what trauma informed yoga teaching is. It seems like an overwhelmingly big word, but in reality, everyone CAN be a trauma informed yoga teacher, and everyone SHOULD be a trauma informed yoga teacher. One in four participants in a yoga class is likely to have survived trauma, and we have no idea who they may be in our classes. They may have experienced sexual assault, physical assault, abuse as a child, or even complex trauma such as narcisstic abuse survivors. Major trauma aside, in reality, everyone carries some level of stress, sadness and grief within them. As trauma-informed yoga teachers, we can make sure we create a safe space for all yoga students. In this episode, Alex explains some of the key aspects of trauma-informed or trauma-sensitive teaching. If this episode interests you, Alex will be teaching an indepth lecture on this subject as part of her 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training, Module 4 - the Heart Chakra. Her next training starts next week - head to https://www.themindfullifepractice.com/yoga-teacher-training to book your spot!
