Marking 12 Years Sober in Japan – Freedom from Fear

03/14/25 • 38 min

Sober Mess Podcast
I went to Japan to mark 12 years sober, not just to celebrate not drinking, but to embrace the freedom sobriety has given me. From flying across the country on bullet trains, trying skiing for the first time, and fully embracing 7-Eleven’s elite food, this trip was all about new experiences. Sobriety has taken away the fear, and now anything feels possible. Grateful everyday.

E155: (Roostar) - The Path to Sobriety: How Roostar Found Hope

In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Roostar, whose journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Originally from Essex, England, Rooster now lives his in Galway. He shares his powerful story of loss, addiction, and redemption—starting with the devastating loss of his sister at a young age, which led him to alcohol as a way to cope. Caught up in trouble and gang life, Rooster eventually moved to New Zealand in search of a fresh start. But as he quickly learned, you can’t outrun your demons. It was there that he met the love of his life, a woman from Galway, and after marrying her, he returned to Ireland—only to find himself still battling alcoholism. At his lowest point, during what felt like an unbearable moment, Rooster stopped by a stream and, looking into the water, felt an overwhelming sense of hope and strength. That moment became his turning point. He reached out for help, joined a sober community, and has been on the path of recovery ever since. Rooster also speaks about the impact of Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous (YPAA), a fellowship where he found connection and support among others who understood his struggles. This is a story of resilience, second chances, and the power of community. Tune in to hear Rooster’s inspiring journey to sobriety. E156: Dylan Evans - Beating Cancer & Taking on the English ROC Triathlon

In this episode, I sit down with Dylan Evans, a two-time cancer survivor who refuses to let adversity define him. Now, he’s taking on an immense physical challenge—the English ROC Triathlon—to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that has been there for him every step of the way. We talk about his journey through cancer, the resilience it takes to keep fighting, and why he’s pushing his limits with this grueling endurance race. Dylan’s story is one of determination, grit, and proving that anything is possible.
