How To Avoid Age Discrimination In Your Job Search
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
05/05/20 • 14 min
One of the biggest worries I hear from my senior level clients and job seekers in general is the fear of about age discrimination. Serious concerns begin around age 55, but some people, particularly women, tell me they begin to feel it as early as their mid-forties.
Yes, age discrimination is out there. But there are a lot of reasons, not related to skills, that people don’t get hired. Candidates may be considered too young, too old or, in some cases, the wrong gender. You may not get hired because you remind the interviewer of a former colleague or even a neighbor they don’t like.
Conscious and unconscious biases exist. We all have them.
While you can’t control other people's biases, you don’t have to feed into them either. In this episode, you'll learn some strategies to help you mitigate age discrimination.
In this session you'll learn
How your email address may be aging you - and what to do about it
* Why you need a photo on LinkedIn - Hint: Profiles with photos a lot more views
* Why you need a background photo on your LinkedIn profile too
* How you may be misusing your LinkedIn profile, and how to fix that
* Why you need to rethink your look, is your wardrobe dating you
* Whether it's essential to wear a suit to a job interview, it depends where you live

You Need to Have an Answer This Key Question To Get Hired
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
10/20/20 • 6 min
Some people go into interviews and wing it. Others prepare ahead of time. Usually this includes researching the company and planning responses for commonly asked interview questions.
Questions like “what is your management style?” and “where do you see yourself in 5 years?”
But, there’s one key question they often don’t prepare to answer.
“Why do you want to work here?”
When I was recruiting, I always asked candidates if they knew anything about the company. The smart ones would tell me a few things they learned while researching the company, things that made them want to work there.
The unprepared would say “no” and leave it at that.
If they were otherwise well qualified, I passed them to the hiring manager. When candidates expressed a strong interest in the company, I made sure to pass that along too. But, I wasn’t making the hiring decision.
In this episode you’ll learn how to prepare to answer that key question.
#1 COMPANY WEBSITE
Review the company website. Read their mission statement. Many companies include staff bios, review those you be working with or working for.
Visit the career section. Do they have information on possible career paths? Do they have videos that give you insight into the culture?
#2 SOCIAL MEDIA
Follow them on social media. Where are they present? What do they post? You may learn about new products or initiatives. On Twitter and/or Facebook you may get an opportunity to meet recruiters.
#3 LINKEDIN PROFILES
Check the key players out on LinkedIn. Read their profiles and review their activity. What type of content do they like and/or share? Have they written any articles on LinkedIn?
If well-written, their About section will give you some insight into who they are as a person. You may learn why they choose their career or what they love about their job. You may find that they went to the same college or university.
Conducting advance research will give you a distinct advantage over lazy candidates who wing it. First, it should provide a few talking points you can use during the interview process.
Second, it can help you prepare to answer, “Why do you want to work here?”
Maybe the company’s mission aligns with your personal values. Perhaps they are innovators in their field. Possibly the person you’ll be working for inspires you.
Researching companies before you apply is a good idea. You may find they are not a good fit for you. Researching a company before your job interview is essential. When a potential employer asks why you want to work there, you need to have a compelling, well thought out, and, hopefully, honest answer.

Show Me The Money - How To Answer The "Salary" Question
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
07/11/20 • 10 min
Most job seekers dread talking to recruiters and employers about salary. In many states it’s illegal to ask candidates about their current salary. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be asked about your expectations.
The truth is, you can’t completely dodge the salary question.
But, to some degree you can control it. You do this by understanding the process and being prepared.
This episode covers 3 areas: why recruiters as about your salary, possible ways to respond, and how to determine a salary range. ***
#1 Why do recruiters ask about your salary?
As a former recruiter, I know they don’t ask your salary requirements to put you on the spot. Recruiters ask about your salary because each job has a predetermined salary range which has been provided by the hiring manager and/or human resources.
Experienced recruiters know that salaries at the higher end of the spectrum will go to the most desirable candidates, those who have everything they are looking for, and salaries at the lower end will go to those with fewer skills or less experience.
(To learn more about how recruiters work listen to Episode #5 Former Recruiter Shares How Recruiters Work and How They Can (And Cannot) Help You)
#2 How should you respond to questions about salary?
If you want to be considered for the position you need to prepare an answer for salary questions.
Some states have passed laws prohibiting employers from asking job applicants about their salary history. As of June 2, 2020, 19 states have enacted salary history bans, according to HRDIVE. (Check your state on HRDIVE’s running list of salary history bans.)
But that doesn’t mean there will be no salary questions. Recruiters and employers can ask you about your expectations. There are a few ways you can answer. Always remember that the highest salary in that range will go to a candidate who meets most if not all the requirements.
#3 How to you decide on a salary range?
Research, research, research. The best way to be ready for the dreaded salary question is to prepare in advance. There is plenty of information readily available.
One of the easiest ways to find out salary information is online. A few of them are
Salary.com, Payscale.com, Bureau of Labor and Statistics (Wage Data by Area and Occupation), and The Occupational Outlook Handbook (Earnings)
After your research get additional information by talking to people either familiar with or working in your target position.
Remember that compensation is more than just salary. It’s also benefits like health insurance, vacation and sick time (Paid Time Off), tuition reimbursement, flexible schedules, etc. Make a list of the criteria that’s most important to help you evaluate job offers.
Talking salary is tricky for both sides. Prepare your answer to the salary question before you begin your job search to avoid getting caught off guard.

5 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Effective
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
05/06/20 • 8 min
Your LinkedIn profile is your face to the business world. When recruiters, employers, or people you meet at networking events visit your LinkedIn profile they are looking for some insight into who you are as well as your professional experience. In other words, why you do what you do, not just what you do.
If key elements of your profile are missing or barely there, it can hurt your chances of finding a new job. In episode you'll learn how to make sure 5 essential sections are working effectively for you.
#1 Head shot - Many people don't include a head shot because they worry about discrimination. But not having one makes people wonder why. They think you're hiding something.
#2 Background photo - A lot of people don't bother to put up a background photo. But not having one makes your profile, and by extension you, look out of touch.
#3 Headline - LinkedIn calls the Headline a headline for a reason. Don't just use the default headline, your job and title, use LinkedIn's headline sell yourself.
#4 About - Don't waste this space selling your employer or fill it with a boring biography. Use it to tell your career story.
#5 Professional Experience - If a recruiter stumbles on your LinkedIn profile, don't think job titles and employer names are going to sell him or her. They want to see what you can do. It's also a place to add some personality

It's Easier to Find a New Job When You Have a Plan
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
09/13/20 • 11 min
There are a lot of reasons people change jobs. They want the opportunity for growth or more money or both. Some of them hate their boss. The common thread is that they all want a change.
As with most things some are more successful than others. The successful ones are the ones who do the work. They don’t spend all day every day in front of the computer browsing job boards. (While that gives you a feeling of accomplishment, it’s not very effective.)
Successful job seekers develop a multipronged job search plan and work it every day.
This video provides a basic job search plan that you can adapt to your needs. It’s broken down into job search PREP and ongoing activities for ACTIVE and PASSIVE job seekers. If you’re actively looking, as in you really want to find a job, follow Active suggestions. If you’re open or looking but not in any hurry Passive is for you.
#1 TARGET EMPLOYERS
Create a list of 10 or so Target Employers, these are the companies where you would love to work for whatever reason. Monitor their open jobs A = 2-3X a week. P = 1X a week.
#2 JOB BOARDS
While job boards are not the most effective way to find a job, they should be part of every job search. Choose a few and work them weekly A = 1-2 hours a day. P = 1-2 hours a week.
#3 NETWORKING
Research and develop a list of networking opportunities near you. Industry associations, your college Alumni association, etc. Attend events A= 1X week. P = 1-2X month.
#4 LINKEDIN
Make sure your LinkedIn profile is recruiter ready. Really anyone ready. People you meet at a networking event or any employer who likes your resume will be looking at it too. Stay top of mind with connections with status updates A = 2-3X week. P = 1X week.
#5 INTERVIEW PRACTICE
Create a list of the most common interview questions: Why do you want to leave or why did you leave your current position? Why do you want to work here? Why should we hire you? Do you have any questions? (No, is not the right answer here.) Practice with a partner before job interviews.
Develop a multipronged job search plan that includes online and in person activities. Evaluate it periodically to see what’s working for you and what’s not. Keep the activities that are getting results, eliminate those that are not, and always stay open to trying new things.

Have You Fallen For These 7 Job Search Myths? That's Why You Didn't Get Hired
🎧 Smarter Career And Business Moves Podcast
06/01/20 • 11 min
There’s a lot of career advice online. And more articles are being posted every day. Annette admits she’s written her share. Despite all the readily available information, several job search myths just refuse to go away.
In this session, you’ll learn about 7 job search myths and how you can beat them. I want to talk about 7.
— Myth #1 Apply to as many jobs as you can – It’s not just a numbers game. You need to work the “hidden” job market.
— Myth #2 You can’t get a job through social media – Lots of jobs are posted on social media, and while you’re there build some relationships.
— Myth #3 You only need to network when you’re out of work— People are more likely to help people they know and like, build your network now.
— Myth #4 You only need to engage with recruiters when you’re looking — Help recruiters when you can, they will remember you.
— Myth #5 Adding your current job to your old resume will work — Revamping your resume takes strategy and skill.
— Myth #6 You don’t need a cover letter — Whether or not cover letters make a difference is hotly disputed. But why take a chance?
— Myth #7 You don’t need a thank you note, either — Most employers (94%) say a thank you note is expected.
Finding and securing a job takes work. Sitting in front of the computer filling out job applications all day isn’t the best use of your time.
