This week we are talking all things neurodivergence & eating disorder recovery with Dr. Marianne Miller.
Dr. Marianne has been in the mental health field for 27 years and has specialized in eating disorders for the last 12 years. She was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time until she left the university and went into private practice full-time in 2018. Dr. Marianne loves working with eating disorders as a therapist and a coach. She takes a non-diet, feminist approach that helps people of all genders live empowered, authentic lives. She embraces the Health at Every Size model, and is neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ affirming.
We talked to Dr. Marianne about:

  • How eating disorders & disordered eating behavior can be a coping mechanism for neurodivergent folks who struggle with feeling out of place in a society that emphasizes conformity and suppresses emotional expression.
  • The complexities of eating disorder treatment for neurodivergent individuals & the limitations of standardized treatments, like cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • What neurodivergent-affirming care looks like & how we can create more inclusive and effective therapeutic environments.
  • And so much more!

This week, we’re talking to Jenna Jozefowski about diet culture in dance spaces... and so much more!
Jenna Jozefowski helps active women learn to lift and get strong with equal parts challenge and compassion. She is a certified personal trainer & kettlebell instructor, Trauma Informed Weightlifting coach, dance teacher, yoga teacher, and semi-retired professional dancer. After years of living and working in industries full of diet-culture, she got sick and tired of watching people (including herself) running themselves into the ground trying to uphold the narrow-minded image of what our culture sees as “healthy” and “fit”. But instead of giving it all up, she decided that she'd rather change the game, call out the BS, extract the good, and help others use movement to build themselves up rather than tear themselves down.
We had an amazing conversation with Jenna about...

  • how the dance world mirrors the weight stigma that exists in the larger world
  • how she navigated the nuances of being a straight sized person in the real world, but the largest person in the room in the dance world & how she unlearned the body narratives of the dance world
  • how the exclusive body standards of the dance world can keep people who don't fit those standards out of dance spaces (even just for fun!)
  • why she chose to stay in the dance & fitness industry as a voice of change
  • how she navigates the diet culture & body standards of the dance world & plants seeds of change with her dance students
  • why it's so important for performance-based athletes to properly fuel, train & recover, and why she's always the dance teacher with snacks
  • the importance of understanding the role of lived experience & genetics in body diversity
  • why bodies shouldn't be business cards & you can't exercise your way to a "long & lean" body
  • and the power of strength training for flipping harmful body narratives.

You can connect with Jenna on Instagram @itsjennaj, listen to her podcast Tough Cookie Talks wherever you listen to podcasts, and learn how to work with her at itsjennaj.com.

Satisfaction Factor - #17 - What's the Deal With Beauty Standards?
play

01/19/22 • 77 min

In this week's episode, Naomi & Sadie are talking about beauty standards: what they are, how they’re harmful, and how we can approach certain beauty rituals in an autonomous way that gives us the freedom to decide what we actually want to be doing vs. what society expects us to do in regards to our appearance. We also cover Hype House, grey hair, and how being told you look younger than you are is a weird compliment to receive. Plus, we’ve shared before that complimenting weight isn’t a great idea because it upholds societal standards that smaller is better (which is inaccurate). But what about complimenting someone’s hair? Or their clothes? Or their overall attractiveness? Is that okay? You’ll have to listen to hear our thoughts on this!

play

07/06/22 • 41 min

To say that he past few weeks have been hard would be a huge understatement. So this week's episode is all about how we can care for ourselves when it feels like the world is on fire. Black women & femmes have been teaching for generations about the importance of avoiding burnout when fighting oppressive systems. And, while that is not our lesson to teach, we are talking in this episode about: the importance of caring for ourselves & leaving room for our humanity in times of high stress; why it's okay that we all need different things to meet our needs for self-care & processing; and some practical ways that we can engage in self-care right now.
And in a move to honor her needs for space, Naomi has extended the deadline to join the waitlist for her new & improved 1:1 Intuitive Eating & Anti-Diet coaching. Satisfaction Factor - #78 - Beyond Shrinking & Drinking with Lael Atkinson
play

10/04/23 • 40 min

This week, we’re talking to Lael Atkinson (they/them), a certified professional recovery coach who works at the intersection of drinking and dieting. During their experience of parting ways with alcohol and then tackling a lifetime of dieting, disordered eating, and body shame, they found resources that addressed quitting drinking OR that addressed food and body image issues, yet could not find any sources that spoke to the intersection of the two. And in both their personal experience and the experience they saw with many of their clients, they found that the two do indeed frequently overlap. This led Lael to work with both folks who want to examine their relationship with alcohol and folks who want to divest from diet culture. They also created the Beyond Shrinking & Drinking course to address this intersection.
Lael hopes that whether it comes to questioning their drinking, or their participation in diet culture, that people know they can do it without labeling themselves, without judging themselves, and without it reaching a point of being “bad enough.” It’s more than enough to start from a place of asking if your life would be better without it.

We had an amazing conversation with Lael about...

  • their own journey with drinking & dieting, and how it led to the work they do today
  • the parallels between drinking & dieting (and why comparing booze to food is not helpful)
  • the parallels between drinking culture & diet culture
  • why some folks may experience food or body image issues when they quit drinking (and vice versa)
  • how they're working to fight against the shame & stigma of both drinking and dieting
  • and why this work is especially important within the Queer community.

Satisfaction Factor - #16 - Toxic Positivity & Why Negative Feelings Matter
play

01/12/22 • 67 min

On this week's episode, Naomi & Sadie discuss toxic positivity and how “good vibes only” messaging pushes us towards seeking perfection via external rules & societal constructs (and also bypasses ALL of the negative things that happen as a result of trauma, mental health issues, and experiencing marginalization or oppression). Plus, we share how toxic positivity is directly tied into diet culture & how the personal development industry is basically made up of rich dudes telling women they need to be more positive in order to be successful. And don't miss our whole related side conversation about Rachel Hollis!

This week, Naomi & Sadie wrap up the Intuitive Eating Deep Dive series with a nuanced look at the concepts covered by the last two principles of Intuitive Eating, joyful movement and gentle nutrition. Exercise and nutrition are topics that are heavily influenced by diet culture, so these principles generally come last, both in theory and in practice. In this episode, we discuss: why it's beneficial to disconnect movement from weight loss goals; what we mean when we talk about joyful movement; why we might need to take breaks from movement altogether; common barriers to joyful movement; the myth of perfect nutrition; and how to avoid turning nutrition into a diet.

This week we’re talking to Elizabeth Watkins Price, an intentional life design and mindfulness coach.
Elizabeth started EWP Consulting in 2021, after working many kinds of jobs over the last
two decades, including years spent as a classroom teacher, a civil rights lawyer, and a judicial
educator. One pillar of her consulting business is transition coaching, where she helps clients
navigate significant life changes ranging from divorce to career transitions, and also coaching
people who are approaching retirement. Elizabeth is also both personally and professionally
committed to her work as a mindfulness meditation teacher. She designs courses that weave
together the subjects of body awareness, body compassion, and body liberation into the
development of a mindfulness meditation practice.
We had an amazing conversation with Elizabeth about the power of mindfulness and kind attention as the antithesis to diet culture, the issues with how Western mindfulness overlaps with the wellness industrial complex, and how she's integrating the concepts of body liberation and body compassion into her mindful meditation practice spaces.
