Room to Grow Podcast with Emily Gough - Stop Chasing People & Accept Nothing Less Than F*ck Yes Relationships
play

02/15/22 • 29 min

Stop trying to keep something or someone that doesn't want to be kept.

Not everyone can come with you to the next phase of your life. That’s ok. It's part of allowing the flow of life trying to hang onto a relationship of any kind with someone who isn't invested and feeling the f*ck yes.

Because we only want f*ck yes people in our lives.

Friends, lovers, partners, clients, whatever that looks like for you.

We're here for the real deal. No wishy washy BS around here.

Today we're talking:

  • The mutual reciprocity that's required for healthy, fulfilling relationships - but that does *not* mean keeping a scoreboard
  • Allowing the flow of life but letting go of the people that aren't willing, able or meant to come with us on their own journey. And recognizing that releasing allows them to deepen into their own journey, as well. It's the ultimate act of love.
  • Showing up and communicating in ways that the version of you 5 years from now will be proud of.
  • Building your inner circle and vetting people to see if they'll be a good fit in your life (and vice versa)
  • Bringing more curiosity and playfulness into our relationships

Room to Grow Podcast with Emily Gough - Why I Intentionally Spent My Birthday Alone & Taking Your Power Back
play

11/23/21 • 26 min

First up: Join Becoming YOU, the brand new 4-week small group coaching program I'm launching all about reminding yourself exactly who the f*ck you are.

For more details, click here. We kick off Tuesday, November 30th @ 7pm EST. Only 10 spots available, there are still a few left!

And you're going to want to join my email list because there's a LOT happening in 2022 and if we're email friends, you'll be the first to have the details pop into your inbox!

I turned 35 on the weekend, and I decided many months ago I wanted to very intentionally spend my birthday entirely on my own and to do something special for myself to make it totally different.

Multiple people in my life wanted to make plans and I refused all of them (I love you all! 😘)

Instead, I booked a long weekend in downtown Toronto, took myself out for some incredible solo meals, had a massage, got in a couple workouts (I never miss my birthday workout), got in a couple of naps, walked a LOT, checked out some cool sights, and even got myself an adorable slice of birthday cake from an amazing bakery.

The point of this is not to preach self-care at you.

I am, however, encouraging you to take your power back.

Stop waiting for other people to make something happen for you. And stop expecting others to treat you better than you treat yourself.

Start showing yourself the kind of love you give to everyone else.

We're diving into the details of all of this, along with how you can take your power back and show up for yourself in whole new ways.

Out of over 260+ episodes here on the Room to Grow Podcast, this conversation is hands-down one of my favourites to date.

We're speaking with Traver Boehm, an author of two books, 2 time TEDx Speaker, men’s coach and founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement, which is radically redefining the way men around the globe experience their masculinity by uniquely blending both primal elements of manhood with massive doses of consciousness.

With a background in professional bodyguarding, Mixed Martial Arts, Traditional Chinese Medicine and meditation, Traver also teaches people to skillfully use the inevitable pain of their lives as fuel for growth and positive change.

One of the MANY reasons we’re planning a part two is that we didn’t even have enough time to get into a huge portion of his journey. After losing a pregnancy, his marriage and his business partnership all within weeks of each other, he created and embarked upon a social experiment to spend the next 12 months as though they were his last to live.

This conversation is raw, real and unfiltered.

Today, we’re talking about:

-How men show up in relationships and the biggest reason why women end relationships (outside of abuse) and how men can cultivate a superpower to make the feminine feel safe in unexpected ways

-The powerful message Traver has for men everywhere and how he’s looking to change the entire culture and spread his message, along with addressing where men need to take responsibility for their own emotional health

-Men’s mental health, and the mountain of male trauma that often goes unaddressed as males have so much less social support than women and a suicide rate that is 3X higher

-Traver’s take on one of the biggest reasons why he believes mass shootings end up happening and what to do about it.

-What we can learn from our pain

Traver's fire and passion for what he does is so evident, and this episode is an absolute must-listen for anyone and everyone.

Most importantly, please share! More people need to hear this powerful message.

Looking for part 2 with Traver? Check out episode 280.

If you’ve been listening for a while you know I talk about some pretty “uncomfortable” things around here. Well today is no exception, in fact it may be the most uncomfortable episode I have ever recorded. Today is a conversation about abusive relationships, and I want to be clear that this episode does not have the answers, it is about opening the door to a highly uncomfortable, stigmatized, and difficult topic, and offering some perspectives you may not have previously considered.

I’ll be sharing;

  • Some very startling and stark facts, research, and statistics around reported abuse globally in a variety of different demographics
  • The Definition of trauma bonding and what could make it a huge factor in why someone stays in an abusive relationship
  • Falsehoods, stereotypes, misconceptions and a lack of empathy I’ve heard around this topic over the years all while speaking about why we need to shatter these and speak up and out about abuse in relationships.
  • And more...

Are you ready? Let’s go

01/07/22 • 71 min

"Who we are is eternal. Everything else is temporary."

-Leila Dylla

The incredible Leila Dylla is joining us today, and this was a beautiful treat.

She has such a wide and varied story and background, and brings with her an incredibly holistic approach to how she shows up.

Leila is inspiring the heart of change around the world through her writing, speaking, and passionate teaching. As a leader in the modern day spiritual and wellness world, she has been teaching Yoga Asana for over a decade, and is deeply inspired by the path of Bhakti Yoga, energy medicine, transcendental psychology & breath work.

She spent the last 8 years sharing her insights leading group retreats, and Yoga Teacher Trainings. Leila now specializes in trauma informed life coaching, as she guides women back to their Feminine embodiment, Truth, and authentic personal power.

Leila’s background in kinesiology, nutrition, rehabilitative movement, and energy medicine, gives her rare insight into the body and the health challenges faced by women navigating our current culture.

Her deepest passion lies in unraveling and empowering the divine feminine force of the world, and awakening the individual hearts of her clients.

She is an intuitive, self-proclaimed comedian (I can fully attest to her hilarity) and light hearted enthusiast of sacred living. Leila and her dog Folly are usually found in the sunshine, with a cup of coffee in hand.

This conversation with Leila was nothing short of magical. It may have taken us a few months to make it happen, but it was well worth the wait!

We're going into:

  • Radical self approval
  • Learning how to move through emotions without having them swallow us
  • Developing a flexible nervous system - especially when it comes to matters of the heart.
  • How conscious relationships can be a source of deep healing
  • The idea of receiving - for both men and women
  • Living a full, technicolour life and everything that involves.

And so much more than could ever be listed in a few bullet points, truly.

I'm pretty sure if Leila was a colour, she would be a panoply of every colour of the rainbow, and it comes through in every moment of this discussion.

Take a listen, and be sure to connect with Leila below!

Room to Grow Podcast with Emily Gough - Lose the Labels That Keep You Small & Expand Into Real Freedom
play

04/22/22 • 25 min

There are more "labels" than ever floating around out there, especially in the area of anything that could be classified under self-help and personal development.

They can be helpful in some instances. Occasionally these types of labels will help us to feel less isolated and alone, perhaps give us the understanding that we're not the only weird one out there (let's be honest, we're all weird and life is so much more interesting that way ;) )

However, I would argue that identifying too strongly with any particular label has the potential to do more harm than good. Conversely, using these systems of "categorization" to classify others can be unhelpful as well and prevent us from viewing the individual as a whole, complex and unique being, just as you are.

These labels can keep us small, rigid, and wrapped up in these parts of ourselves without allowing the fullness of our personalities to shine through.

Not every little quirk or thing that we're working on about ourselves needs to have a name. Nor should you believe the lie that there's a laundry list of things about you that need "fixing," either.

And labels can also keep us so deeply focused on “self” that we forget how much connection with others heals us, because we heal IN relationship.

We're going into all of this plus specific examples on this episode, and how to nourish yourself instead - without all the extra labels that can weigh us down.

And:

Room to Grow Podcast with Emily Gough - Key Things to Pay Attention To When Dating or Getting Into a Relationship
play

05/10/22 • 42 min

Pull up a seat, because there are some things we need to discuss. And this could completely alter your entire dating experience for the better.

We're talking about the key things to observe when you're getting to know someone.

These aren't tests we're running people through, that's not at all the vibe we're going for. It's simply picking up on and noticing certain details that may have escaped you before, details that can be incredibly telling about how the other person operates, the way they show up in the world and treat others, and how they take responsibility for their role in a relationship.

AND, it will also challenge you to pay close attention to the way you're showing up with others, especially early on when you may feel like you're trying to keep your "messy" side behind closed doors - and why that can be problematic.

Here's a sample of a few of the things we dive into:

  • Pay very close attention to how someone talks about their ex. There's a LOT to cover about this point alone, and we're getting into the nuance related to this.
  • How to pick up on someone else's relationship to honesty & trust.
  • Why having them approve of literally everything you do *might* not be ideal.
  • Openness vs being closed, rigid and inflexible and some of the more subtle ways those qualities can show up.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, this episode is jam packed! Take a listen and let me know what you think ;)

play

10/01/21 • 65 min

He's back! Dr. Jade Teta is a close friend and a listener favourite on the podcast, and we're diving into a series around romantic relationships.

Today's topic is confident detachment, which is the concept of showing up exactly as you are in relationships and letting the chips fall without trying to control the situation. It can feel incredibly vulnerable, but allows you to relax into being yourself, and is the ideal vetting system for which relationships will be the best fit in your life, and which may not.

We're also talking about:

  • Why confident detachment (or being "confidently relaxed") is one of the the most powerful & empowering tools you can have in your relational toolbox
  • What it is and how to implement it with real life examples
  • Exploring a little bit how attachment theory impacts relationships

Dr. Jade is an integrative physician, author and sought after expert in the realm of metabolism and self-development. He spent the last 25 years immersed in the study of strength and conditioning, hormonal metabolism and the psychology of change and success. He is the founder and creator of the international health and fitness company, Metabolic Effect, and the author of several books including the best sellers, Metabolic Effect Diet and Metabolic Aftershock. He has also contributed both, the exercise and sports nutrition chapters, to The Textbook Of Natural Medicine.

His newest company, Next Level Human, combines his medical and fitness knowledge with his expertise in self-development and mindset change.
