The Expectations Of Turning 25 | FNBB 70
06/18/22 • 17 min
Our "little" boy is turning 25 this TO-DAY. I remember when I was turning 25 - I had so many expectations about my life and thoughts of how life would be. And those expectations crashed, but then turned into things so amazing that I never could have dreamed of.
It's easy to put so much pressure on yourself to have it all figured out, but the universe is freaking laughing at you. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. You never know what is going to be around the next corner.
A shout out to my birthday sweet boy - Ian Houston McShane - born 5pm on June 17, 1997. We never knew what hit us. But we did the best we could. He turned out pretty okay.
Make sure to RATE this podcast dammit!
And pat a young person on the back - this world is pretty f-ed up right now and they deserve all of our love and support.

What Exactly Is Ageism And How To Beat Back Aging Myths With Writer And Advocate Ashton Applewhite
Writer and leading spokesperson for the emerging movement to raise awareness of ageism, Ashton Applewhite, is with me to help us recognize the stereotyping of people or groups of people based on their age. We talk about how to begin dealing with this bias through Acknowledgement, Integration, and Activism.
There is so much in this episode, but some of the topics include:
- What is ageism?
- Is there a divide between young and old?
- How does culture teach us to feel about age and aging?
- How does fear drive "the machine" and pit ages against each other?
- When do we start to become biased?
- How do we begin to start overcoming this bias or prejudice?
- What is "age appropriate"?
- What does someone AGE tell you about them? What does it not tell you about them?
- How important is it to push back the myths of aging, especially as a group?
- How do we push back these myths?
- How important is it to make friends of all ages?
- How do we age well?
- What example can we set for our children and how can we keep from being ageist against them and others their age?

[REPLAY] Skin Cancer and How to Prevent It with Marla Bobrow
In this BONUS REPLAY episode of The New Old You, my friend Marla Bobrow and I are doing one of those old fashioned The More You Know type PSAs as we head into the late spring and summer months. We are talking about Skin Cancer, including:
- What it is
- Where and why you get it
- Some science of UV rays
- How it's found and personal procedures to remove it
- What are your risks
- Tips on preventing it
As we age, getting yearly regular screenings is something that should be done, just like your mammogram and yearly exam. The skin is your largest organ and we need to keep an eye on it because no one is immune to skin cancer. We all have done things in our past to abuse our skin and we want to make sure to take care of it and keep an eye on it as we age.
Some tips we'll talk about:
1. Wearing Sunscreen - What SPF? What kind?
2. What times you should not be in direct sun
2. Wearing a hat - What kind?
3. Sunproofing your car
4. Wearing sunglasses
5. Wearing long sleeve and sun protective clothing
6. Eating right - antioxidants to help reduce cell damage
7. Knowing your risk for skin cancer
8. Find a dermatologist and getting yearly screenings
All thanks to Marla for coming on and telling us about her personal experience with skin cancer. It's not something you think about happening to you, until it does. And you can start to avoid it RIGHT NOW.
If this podcast has been helpful and you wish to share it, please do. This is good information for all ages and sexes as we head into warmer, sun filled days.
Make sure to have FUN in the SUN!
