Rally on the Colors Podcast - The ORs: The WHY behind Harpers Ferry

The ORs: The WHY behind Harpers Ferry

07/08/24 • 57 min

The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with another episode from the ORs. In this episode, Bill and Steve, discuss the perplexing "why" behind Harpers Ferry. If you have visited Harpers Ferry or looked at it through pictures, at some point you likely asked yourself WHY an arsenal / armory / fort was placed in such a horrible position to be defended. Hopefully this episode will help shed some light on the WHY behind Harpers Ferry. From the decision of George Washington to place an armory / arsenal there because of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers to the establishment of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroads, Harpers Ferry became a crucial inland logistical supply hub with the capability of supplying the northeastern region. The only other large scale armory / arsenal at that time being located in Massachusetts. Harpers Ferry was essentially created without the forethought of a Civil War dividing the region nearly 70 years later. While Harpers Ferry could in fact be its own specific series, Bill and Steve stick to the facts in a concise timeline and cover the importance of Harpers Ferry during the Civil War as a lead in to the follow on episode covering the importance of the Shenandoah Valley. Again, we thank each and every one of you for continued support of the podcast and the Gettysburg Guard and hopefully you walk away from this episode with a better understanding of the WHY behind Harpers Ferry. Always Forward!

The ORs are another series from the "Rally on the Colors" Podcast, with a little bit of a different atmosphere. Meant more as conversational debates that you might have with friends than direct educational content. In the first installment of this series, Bill, Ty and Steve tackle a controversial topic; who really killed Jennie Wade? A brief overview of the situation Jennie Wade finds herself in at Gettysburg is covered as well as the popular and most widely accepted of the narratives surrounding her death. Bill, Ty and Steve then begin dismantling that narrative and provide alternate explanations about what potentially happened. Although it is not the romanced theory, you might find it factual enough to be believable. And if you don't, we encourage you to get out there and come up with a theory of your own. Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy this episode!

The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with another episode from the ORs but with something significant and special. The ROTC Podcast welcomes it's first ever special guest. And guest #1 of 1 is none other than the man, the myth, and the legend; Jim Hessler. One cannot have a conversation about Major General Dan Sickles at Gettysburg without referencing Jim's extraordinary life work on the topic and Bill and Steve were honored to have Jim as the ROTC Podcast's first ever special guest. In this episode Jim, Bill and Steve discuss Dan Sickles the man before the outbreak of the Civil War before discussing some of his experience during the Civil War as he rises through the ranks to become a Major General and commander of the III Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Once Sickles' background is discussed, Jim, Bill and Steve dive into the circumstances that are occurring in the morning and early afternoon of July 2nd that ultimately lead to the decision to move the III Corps out to the Emmitsburg Road. The Gettysburg Guard and the ROTC Podcast would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Jim for being the first guest on the podcast.
