After Action Review: BMI @ PCWA 160th Gettysburg

In this episode, Bill, Ty and Steve discuss the Guard's portrayal of the Bureau of Military Information during the PCWA's 160th Gettysburg reenactment. The BMI was fielded with the Federal Cavalry and participated in action across all three days of the event, including a clandestine night scout during the night of Day 2. Due to the unique role of the BMI, Bill, Ty and Steve were able to have a bird's eye view of nearly every action that occurred over the weekend. The wait is finally over. Bill and Steve deliver the second installment of the Guard's Civil War 101 Series, this time with the "King of Battle." For this 101 series episode focused strictly on the Federal Artillery, Bill and Steve briefly cover the uniforms specific to the Artillery before taking you on a deep dive of a Civil War artillery piece, it's crew, and the battery it belongs to. Discussed are the authorized strengths from the War Department and the manual in use. Battery organization is discussed and broken down to the individual "piece," including how it is crewed and the ballet of warfare that occurs to load and fire the piece. Bill and Steve cover details specific to the battery as it organized in line of battle and then give an overview of the main types of field artillery pieces used and some of the pertinent nomenclature for each gun. The episode wraps up with a discussion on ammunition types and the overall employment of artillery on the battlefield. Throughout the episode you will find some interesting sidebars about misrepresentations of artillery through movies and reenacting. We hope you enjoy this episode!
