Podcast Editors Mastermind - What to do when you mess up as a podcast editor – PEM0050
play

04/29/22 • 50 min

Being a podcast editor can seem like it's all fun and games until you mess up on someone else's show. Then it can be scary.

But let's face it: no matter how much time and care we take, and how much we invest in quality control, it's inevitable that there will be mistakes. Maybe even major mistakes.

Join us as we talk about some of our mistakes and the strategies we've developed to make things right (or as right as possible) so that we can create the best possible outcome for everyone.

If you spend a little time creating strategies for how to handle mistakes, it can save you a LOT of headaches later.

We stream live to Facebook Page every other week.

Podcast Editors Mastermind - How to Use Survivor Bias to Your Advantage – PEM0052
play

05/26/22 • 56 min

How do you make decisions about what's possible or the right thing to do? Do you look for examples of success to the exclusion of contrary information? That's Survivor Bias. And it's all over in the podcasting space. I mean, if we didn't think we could be Joe Rogan, would we even try? Hopefully. But the downside of Survivor Bias is that it's possible we might toil for years on the faulty assumption that something's possible. Or that the way it's always been done is the right way to do it. But that if that's not the case? What if we guide our clients based on faulty information? Listen as we explore the concept of Survivor Bias and how it can affect us, our businesses, and our clients. We don't claim to know the answers, but we want to ask the questions because we want to see you, ourselves, and our collective clients succeed. We stream live to our Facebook Page every other week.

The great thing about the podcast production industry is that for the most part, we're all friends (or at least friendly). But that doesn't mean that we should share EVERYTHING with our peers.

After all, sometimes we are also competing with each other for the same jobs.

What things can we talk about? What things should we talk about? What things might get us into legal or ethical hot water?

Listen to hear our thoughts and feel free to share your own in the comments.

Producing a podcast is a LOT of work, and it can be confusing. Fortunately, there are editors like us who not only take on some of the workload, but also bring our expertise and structure to the process. And as an added benefit, we are always looking for ways to improve what we do, for our benefit and our clients.

We focus on improving our processes, get better at identifying issues, improving client relationships, and more. However, that doesn't mean that every client is a fit for us and sometimes we have to make the tough call - to decide that it's time to part ways with a client.

Of course, even in parting, how we do it matters.

Join us as Mike Wilkerson of EditorCorps.com and VoiceFarmers.com shares how he not only practices these himself, but also helps other editors get their businesses up and running ... in a way that benefits everyone and gets another pro editor out into the wild :)

Listen to Discover

  • Signs that it might be time to part ways
  • Whether it's worth adapting to match a client's processes
  • Why Mike started EditorCorps.com and how it can help podcast editors get started

Podcast Editors Mastermind - How to Talk About What You Do as a Podcast Editor
play

03/02/23 • 53 min

One of the great things about podcasting is that there aren't really any "rules." Sure, there are principles that often apply. But no rules.

However, there's a downside to that in that sometimes the words we use mean something different to prospective clients or employers than what the mean to us. Like the word, "podcast editor."

What does that really mean?

Listen to learn more about the different kinds of editing. Along the way, you might find out something about a new way you want to grow as an editor. And you'll likely gain some insight into how to describe what you do so that you can create differentiation and clarity in the minds of your customers and potential customers.

Listen to Discover

  • Ways to think about the kinds of editing we do
  • Similarities to (and differences from) radio, TV, and film production
  • Why you might want to have two different ways to share what you do
  • Carrie's suggestions if you want to move from linear editing to story editing
