Episode 21 with Dr. Kim O'Brien: Mental Health Tools for the Female Athlete
In today's episode, we speak with Dr. Kim O'Brien about common mental health issues experienced by female athletes including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Tune in to learn more about the techniques she uses when working with her female athlete clients and learn what tools you can try if you find yourself in similar situations.
Dr. Kimberly O’Brien is a Clinical Social Worker in the Sports Medicine Division and Female Athlete Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, as well as a Research Scientist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She received her BA from Harvard University (’00), where she was a four year member and co-captain of the hockey team which won a National Championship in 1999. She obtained her MSW (’05) and PhD (’11) from Boston College, and completed her postdoctoral fellowship (’13) at Brown University. Her clinical practice serves adolescent and young adult athletes with mental health concerns. Her research is focused on the development and testing of brief interventions for suicidal adolescents with and without substance use and their families, with an additional specialization on interventions which utilize technology. Her recent line of research with the Female Athlete Program is centered around the mental health of young athletes in an effort to develop novel interventions and programs that foster psychological resilience. She has co-authored over 50 articles and book chapters related to adolescent suicide, substance use, and mental health, and was awarded the Young Investigator Research Award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in 2019. She continues to stay involved in athletics as she currently coaches hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse, and plays competitive hockey and platform tennis. She is also the founder and director of Unlimited Resilience, LLC, a group mental health practice designed for athletes by athletes (unlimitedresiliencellc.com).

Bekah is an ACE certified personal trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist and RRCA Run Coach. She previously served as the Regional Fitness Director and Master Educator at Orangetheory Fitness. Bekah has over 15 years experience in the fitness industry having taught Spin, Core/Balance, Bootcamp, Contact/Cardio Kickboxing, Zumba, Orangetheory Fitness, and Strength Training. She has also privately trained and taught group fitness at several corporate gyms including the Abercrombie Corporate Gym and American Signature/DSW Corporate Gym.
Bekah's biggest passion is running with the marathon being her favorite distance.
She is a Charlotte Marathon Ambassador where she gets to connect with the Charlotte Running Community and promote one of the best races in the US! She has run 22 Marathons and 15 Half Marathons and she is a 16x Boston Qualifier having run the Boston Marathon 6 times.
Bekah was nominated for Woman of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society where she is leading a 10 week fundraising campaign for blood cancer treatments. The goal of LLS is to fund $150 million toward pediatric cancer treatments.
