Nutritional Revolution Podcast

Kyla Channell, MSc Nutrition & Human Performance

Nutritional Revolution (NR) was created when owner Kyla Channell saw that there was a true disconnect between daily nutrition and nutrition for athletes. Specifically on when and how to use specific fueling methods to achieve optimal performance as well as health in their sport. NR believes that any one person no matter their age, weight, or current struggle can make healthy changes to improve their well being and get closer to their goals through education, motivation, support, encouragement, and the right guidance. In this podcast, we go beyond food & nutrition; we also explore the best practices for better living.

Nutritional Revolution Podcast - Episode 115 with Leadville 100 MTB Winner, Melisa Rollins

In this week's episode we talk to Leadville 100 MTB Winner, Melisa Rollins about:

  • How journey into mountain biking (hint: her parents are badass!)
  • Her fueling and hydration strategy for Leadville 2024 (and how that has evolved)
  • Shifting racing strategies to build more momentum and inspiration

Melisa Rollins is a professional cyclist who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. She started cycling casually in 2016 when she signed up for the Leadville Trail 100 MTB on a whim— a race her parents had been racing every year for nearly 2 decades. Crossing the finish line in Leadville that year lit a fire in her, and she went back almost every year with the simple goal of being faster than her previous self. In 2021 her result at Leadville led her to her first pro-contract with Team Twenty24. Here, she had the opportunity to become a more well-rounded bike racer and race many disciplines: road, gravel, mountain bike, time trial, and criteriums. She learned she loves racing just about any discipline on two wheels, and is always eager to spread positivity on the bike.

In this week's episode we talk to triathlon coach, Chris Bagg, about:

  • How to effectively train for Ironman (full and 70.3)
  • What you should be doing to qualify for Ironman World Champs

Chris Bagg has been an athlete his whole life, ever since he dangled from the outside of an escalator in the Boston Museum of Science at age five. Chris played soccer through college, standing in one place as a goalkeeper, and then, after moving to Washington D.C., he discovered he had an aptitude for endurance, rather than ball sports. Since then he’s been a runner, a triathlete, a cyclist, and a cross-country skier, all at a high level. He raced professionally and semi-professionally as a triathlete and cyclist for 15 years, respectively, posting career results of 4th at Ironman Canada in 2011, 2nd at Challenge Penticton in 2014, 13th (and top American) at the great Challenge Roth in 2017, 12th at the ITU Long Distance World Championships in 2017, and 22nd at Unbound Gravel in 2019. He started coaching endurance sports in 2009, but with his background as a teacher, he’s been a coach for most of his life. He happily describes his job now as “a gym teacher for adults.”

As the founder of Campfire Endurance Coaching, Chris aims to provide all athletes, regardless of level or genetic gift, with the kind of training that professional athletes receive: consistent and thoughtful communication, programs tailored to their goals and lives, and a wide perspective that encompasses the athlete’s entire career. He believes that endurance sport, through its unique flavor of adversity, can make athletes faster, happier, and healthier, and he wants that for all of you.

We’re back with professional adventurer Sunny Stroeer, who recently made an attempt on the self-supported FKT of the Arizona Trail. Although Sunny decided to cut the feat short after over 200 miles and one week, while on record pace, the nutrition strategy she employed was successful in that time, and one that surprised her as we worked together. In today’s podcast, we discuss how the miles went, what went right, what she might change for the future, and what her takeaways were.
More about Sunny: Sunny Stroeer is a free spirit and adventurer and we had the pleasure of working with Sunny as she prepared for this massive feat of endurance. Her overarching passion is to be active and push her limits in the side- and backcountry, spanning a multitude of sports from big-wall climbs over multi-day paddling trips to 100 milers and everything in between. Her specialty is the high altitude endurance realm; she holds speed records on Aconcagua and on the Annapurna Circuit and has excelled on high trails in the Colorado Rockies. As a storyteller, Sunny draws on her experiences and adventures as a professional mountain athlete to connect with her audience through captivating visuals and engaging presentations, focusing on topics like transformation, goal setting, perseverance, women empowerment and systematic decision-making in high risk environments.
