Nourishing Women Podcast - 116: Let's Talk About Your Relationship with Social Media
play

10/08/19 • 13 min

This episode marks an exciting update to the show, we are now offering two episodes a week!

Tuesday episodes will be shorter in length and Friday episodes will include personal life updates again and usual business updates, and then share the longer length episodes. I’m also thinking Tuesday episodes will be more of thought based conversations and Friday episodes will be for guests or educational, step by step, or more science driven episodes.

I promise I’ll always have episodes on Friday no matter what, but the Tuesdays may be just seasons we...or every other week...let’s see how I feel about it on the production side and how you feel about it from the content side and we will go from there!

Today we are going to chat how social media can impact your intuitive eating journey. Social media's role in your journey is so important its something I ask every client at Nourishing Minds Nutrition, and included it in my Body Image Reset.

After this episode I want you to do your own analysis of your relationship with social media.

While I love to use social media for connection to my community, networking with peers and getting daily inspiration, there was also a time in my life where it made me feel disconnected from my intuition and I also started to question my own eating and exercise habits, as I began to compare myself to popular influencers on the app.

Can you relate? Let me also ask...

How much time do you spend on their daily? Do you get excited, inspired and enjoy connecting with friends and peers?

Or does it make you anxious? Begin to question yourself? Does it make it harder for you to accept your body? Yourself? Does it make it harder to know what to eat?

Does it in any way make you feel not enough? Less worthy or deserving?

Today's episode gives you tips and strategies for how to utilize social media in a way that supports your relationship with yourself and your intuitive eating journey. We chat how to take a social media detox, take inventory of who you follow, create boundaries with the app and more!

This episode is a super special one. I invite my past client, Maddy, on the show to share her personal journey to freedom in food and life. In this episode, Maddy shares her relationship with food growing up, when being the “healthy one” became her identity, realizing she had a problem- orthorexia, and seeking help to recover with a therapist and working with me at Nourishing Minds Nutrition.

Maddy shares what it was like to heal her disordered eating and get her period back, where she is at now and some amazing takeaways she has from her personal journey.

Maddy is a wonderful example of someone who was dedicated to her healing and becoming an intuitive eater, and recognizing when it was time to ask for assistance in that process. I so appreciate her vulnerability and honesty in sharing her story in hopes of helping others, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it!

A few episodes ago (in episode 144 on allowing yourself to grieve your here and now body) we discussed one of the first, critical stages of body acceptance. You have to grieve your here and now body and understand how your body image is so directly tied to your self worth and self esteem. Yet, how do you go from hating your body to then accepting it?

Today’s podcast episode explores how to move from hating your body and grieving it, to then feel tolerant and neutral towards it and work towards body (and more importantly, self) acceptance. Our guest on today’s show, Alissa Rumsey, is one of my favorite non-diet dietitians in the intuitive eating space and she’s amazing at chatting about body image work. In this episode, you’ll get tangible tips for how to work to accept your body (in time!) and we also discuss in detail what it actually means to develop and have a healthy body image.

In this episode we discuss in detail:

  • Alissa’s journey to becoming a non-diet dietitian and making the shift in her career to educating and counseling through an intuitive eating and health at every size lens
  • Her advice for RDs-to-be and anyone out there building an online health and nutrition business
  • The importance of SEO, strategy and intention for your website and your business
  • Navigating body acceptance, how to move from body grief and hating your body to acceptance
  • Where body image work comes in at during the intuitive eating journey
  • What body respect means and how to practice it
  • Making peace with potential weight gain in the intuitive eating journey
  • What does a healthy body image look like and Alissa’s #1 piece of advice for developing it
  • Alissa’s current favorite tools for practicing wellness without obsession

More on Alissa:

Alissa Rumsey MS, RD, CDN, CSCS is a New York City-based registered dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor who is passionate about empowering women to reclaim the space to eat and live unapologetically. She is the founder of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, a weight-inclusive private practice that specializes in intuitive eating, body acceptance and disordered eating recovery. Her philosophy is rooted in the anti-diet and Health at Every Size (HAES®) framework, as she believes true health comes from nurturing behaviors to enhance physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Through her virtual one-on-one coaching and online programs, she helps people break the dieting cycle and cultivate a healthy and peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.

Alissa’s expertise is regularly featured on television, online, and in print. She is a monthly contributor to US News and World Report and has appeared in over 100 media outlets including NBC Nightly News, CNN, SELF and Women’s Health. Alissa earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Dietetics and Exercise Science from the University of Delaware and a Master’s of Science degree in Health Communications from Boston University. In her spare time, Alissa can be found traveling to far-off countries, and, as a self-proclaimed “foodie,” exploring the expansive New York City food and restaurant scene.

But really, wtf is diet culture? It’s a term that’s being used and thrown around a lot, but how do we define it and know if the information we are consuming is diet culture or not?

Today’s podcast episode explores this in detail, sharing the definition of diet culture and giving concrete specific versions of diet culture in detail. Plus, I give you three tips to be able to point out if something is diet culture or not, and end the episode sharing questions you can ask yourself to determine if you’re being influenced by diet culture.
