Not a Guru
Rachel Hunter
Click-bait headlines, fitness bros, nutrition zealots and influencers try to get us to buy into every new extreme and make us question everything. Is rice bad for me? Should I be running every day to be healthy? Do I need to worry about protein? What about Keto? Rachel Hunter is an evidence-based nutrition coach tired of the status quo. #Health isn't for people that look, eat, exercise or flex a certain way. It is not just for the beige Instagram biddies. Here to firmly plant herself in the unsexy middle ground of nuance, scientific evidence and coaching experience, Rachel will aim to demystify the world of nutrition and #wellness. No smoke and mirrors, no gimmicks, and definitely no gurus allowed just a coach committed to providing the best practical tips available. Oh, and a juicy dollop of banter to really sweeten the deal.

Ep. 35 When 'it depends' follow your ick

If you're trolling the internet for free but useful information in order to improve your diet or get more consistent in the gym, there are many different factors that go into advice. As a coach that tries their very best to give quality recommendations or suggestions for free, when I don't know that much about you it is really difficult and I always start everything with 'it depends' because it really does! I don't know how much you work, your preferences, your likes, and dislikes, if you have kids, how many kids, how old your kids are, etc.
In this episode I give the most basic litmus test I can come up with to figure out what it is that you need to work on if the advice given is 'it depends'
Tune in and let me know how it goes :)

Is it stoicism or is she dissociating? Right after the Easter holiday, I think we can all agree that copying and pasting a math solution onto an emotional issue just won't work. It is a round peg and a square hole...
Now stoicism is often toted around as something 'motivating' to make us want to work out and eat broccoli, but does it work? Every 18-year-old personal trainer with a six-pack and a chip on their shoulder owns at least one copy of "Daily Stoic" but does it really mean that your yo-yo dieting is solved? That your stress management is good? That you'll have a good strategy for your nutrition goals?
Tune in to find out, this one is a bit of a rant.

Your blood sugar will increase when you eat certain foods, carbohydrates, and protein, but how worried do we need to be about that? We all know that diabetes can wreak havoc on our health where glucose runs rampant in our bodies. But is it important to monitor how much your blood sugar spikes when you eat foods? Is that information going to help me make more personalised better nutritional choices?
Well, to be honest, I wouldn't necessarily say so, in this episode I dive into why exactly that is and the considerations to be made.

What do all of these things have in common you ask? Well let me tell you, in this little soundbite of an episode I discuss the difference between causation and correlation. Lots of things are correlated but that doesn't always add up to one CAUSING the other and we can really get carried away with this in nutrition studies. Especially in click-bait headlines.
Let me know what you think!

Well, this was not the podcast that was planned! However, I took my own advice to put out something less than perfect in the name of consistency, and I tease our next episode all about continuous glucose monitors and if we all really need them, or should we hand over our money immediately. Speak to you soon you legendary not-gurus.

Pardon the sound quality at the beginning of this episode! But if you stick with it, you'll figure out all the answers as to why your gym workouts are not burning as many calories as you think! It really does seem to be a myth that persists, exercise is great for us, and exercise does indeed burn calories but unless you're doing Iron man it is unlikely they burn enough calories to change your body composition significantly. So does that mean you don't have to work out at all? Or does that mean that you can do workouts you enjoy and it's all additive to your overall wellbeing? Tune in and find out :)

Slapping chocolate out of your hand, following you around telling you, you're worthless and lazy, is that what you're expecting with a nutrition coach? Well, I have such BAD NEWS FOR YOU, I won't be doing that. And not because I don't call my clients out on their bs, lovingly, but shame, guilt and over-restriction don't work to move you closer to your goals. My job as a coach is to pull the best out of you, not to judge you or pretend that broccoli tastes better than cheesecake, but rather move you closer to your goals whatever they may be.

We have all heard it, we've heard it a million times, but is it actually true? Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Few things make me more worked up than oversimplification and prescriptive nutrition advice. So let's dig into if you can kick-start your metabolism with a bowl of cheerios.

In this episode of Not Nutrition Gurus, we delve deep into the often elusive realm of health and fitness goals. While the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goal-setting framework is widely touted, we challenge the notion that it should be your first stop on the journey to success. Instead, we explore the power of values-based goal setting and how it can revolutionise your approach to health and fitness.
We begin by examining the limitations of SMART goals, emphasising their focus on external metrics rather than internal motivation. While they provide a clear roadmap, they often neglect the why behind our goals, leaving us vulnerable to burnout and lack of fulfilment.
Next, we introduce the concept of values-based goals, which centre on aligning our actions with our core values. By tapping into what truly matters to us, we cultivate intrinsic motivation that sustains us through setbacks and challenges. We discuss how to identify your values and integrate them into your health and fitness journey, creating a sense of purpose and meaning that transcends mere achievement.
But how do we bridge the gap between intention and action? We offer practical strategies for translating values into tangible behaviours. From creating rituals and habits to fostering a supportive environment, we empower listeners to take consistent, sustainable steps towards their goals.
Finally, we address the crucial role of self-compassion and resilience in the pursuit of health and fitness. We debunk the myth of perfection and embrace the messy, imperfect nature of progress. By cultivating kindness towards ourselves, we foster resilience in the face of setbacks, ultimately propelling us towards long-term success.
Join us as we embark on a journey beyond SMART goals, where values serve as our compass and fulfilment awaits at every milestone. It's time to redefine success in health and fitness and unlock the transformative power of aligning our actions with our deepest values.
