Navigating the Labyrinth of Trauma - Part 2
Motor City Hypnotist
05/07/24 • 46 min
Healing from trauma can feel like navigating a labyrinth in the dark, but Matt Fox and I light the way with our illuminating discussion on the journey towards recovery. Tune in as we delve into the therapeutic power of hypnosis and equip you with free resources to deepen your understanding of its role in trauma therapy. Broadcasting from our cozy Southfield Studios, we also dissect the unique ways trauma impacts various age groups, from bedwetting in children to selective mutism in teenagers, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these different expressions of distress.
The emotional aftermath of traumatic events, especially for teenagers in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, is a maze of complexity. We dissect past and present coping mechanisms, highlighting the significance of healthy emotional processing and the dangers of substance misuse. The 'big three' - sleep, diet, and exercise - are heralded as pillars of mental health, and we share practical advice on weaving exercise into a jam-packed schedule. Our chat offers not just a listening ear but a trove of strategies to maintain a sense of stability in an ever-chaotic world.
Our final chapter resonates with a call for systemic change, addressing the stark reality of mental health care access and the barriers constructed by prohibitive insurance costs. With personal anecdotes of navigating high deductibles, we outline the need for sweeping reforms to make mental health services universally accessible. Wrapping things up, we pivot towards our podcast's core mission - to foster approachable and relatable mental health discussions that strip away intimidating jargon. We part with guiding principles for a fulfilling life and an open invitation to join us for our next live session, promising more educational insights served with a side of entertaining banter.

Your Bank Account Is Affecting Your Brain More Than You Realize - Part 2
Motor City Hypnotist
04/22/25 • 42 min
The vicious cycle of financial struggles and mental health challenges affects millions of Americans, yet many suffer in silence due to shame, stigma, or simply not knowing where to turn. We're back with the second part of our deep dive into this critical but often overlooked connection.
When depression takes hold, even basic financial management feels impossible. Bills pile up unopened, bank accounts go unchecked, and the resulting financial chaos only deepens the psychological distress. For those with bipolar disorder, manic episodes can trigger devastating spending sprees, while anxiety disorders might lead to complete financial avoidance. The result? A downward spiral where money problems worsen mental health, and deteriorating mental health makes financial recovery seem increasingly impossible.
What makes this situation particularly challenging is that seeking professional help costs money – the very thing in short supply. This paradox leaves many feeling trapped with nowhere to turn. But there is hope, and it starts with small, practical steps anyone can implement regardless of their current financial situation.
We explore actionable strategies like tracking every penny spent, switching from cards to cash to make spending feel more tangible, implementing a 24-hour waiting period before purchases, and finding joy in free or low-cost activities. Perhaps most importantly, we discuss the power of compound interest working in both directions – how debt compounds destructively while savings and investments build wealth over time.
The road to recovery isn't quick, but with consistent effort and the right support, both financial stability and mental wellness are achievable goals. Whether you're currently struggling or supporting someone who is, this episode provides the practical framework for breaking the cycle and moving toward a healthier relationship with both money and mind.

Embracing Life's Challenges with Radical Acceptance - Part 2
Motor City Hypnotist
02/22/24 • 31 min
My tours during the high school prom and graduation season always leave me with unforgettable tales—like that time in Michigan when the unexpected happened on stage. If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a touring hypnotist's life, this episode peels back the curtain, revealing the highs, lows, and hilarity that come with the job. Plus, I'll give you a sneak peek into the practical side of booking my shows, and share a few anecdotes from my adventures in Canada that are sure to tickle your funny bone.
On a more somber note, we tackle the weighty subject of loss, specifically the heartache of losing a furry companion. Through personal reflection, I discuss how radical acceptance can be a lifeline in the stormy seas of grief. You'll learn about the stages we pass through on the road to acceptance and the crucial role of self-talk during these trying times. In a shift towards self-discovery, we examine how an eye-opening classroom exercise can reveal the positive attributes that others see in us—qualities we might undervalue in ourselves. For all the teenagers out there, and anyone wrestling with body image or self-esteem, this episode offers a treasure trove of insights on nurturing a kinder, more supportive inner dialogue.

BE KIND
Dave shares a wild restaurant incident
People who are kind and compassionate may live longer according to studies.
What Do I Mean When I Say Kindness?
*Doing something that helps yourself or others. That’s right! You can and should be kind to yourself.
*Doing something that benefits someone else without any expectation for a “return” or recognition.
“Carry out a random act of kindness with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Princess Diana
*Being kind can benefit your mental health by releasing endorphins, reducing stress and improving your mood and self-esteem.
What Can You Do?
*Volunteer for a local charity or community organization
*Offer assistance (financially or physically) to those people going through a hard time
*Volunteer at your kid’s school to help out
*Invite friends and family to a community project
*Start an online club to connect others with similar interests
*Say please and thank you during all exchanges with other people
*Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile to check in
Be Kind To Yourself
Many of my clients spend so much time trying to help others (family members, friends, co-workers), they sacrifice time to spend on themselves. You have to make yourself a priority and this is a time when the work “selfish” is NOT a bad thing.
*Make “me time” a priority and be sure not to skip it
*Shut down social media and other distractions and just spend some time by yourself.
*Do something you enjoy (drawing, gardening, cooking, exercise, listening to music).

What Is Abreaction?
An abreaction is an emotional, unconscious reaction that you have in response to something that brings back a painful situation you experienced. It may be an event that you remember, or it may be something that suddenly pops into your consciousness when having the abreaction.
History of Abreaction in Therapy
Abreaction, along with its counterpart catharsis, which refers to emotional release, was first discussed at length by Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer in their early studies on psychoanalysis. They initially put a significant amount of emphasis on the importance of abreaction and catharsis.2
Uses for Abreaction
Abreaction is no longer used on its own as a treatment, but it may come into play in other types of trauma therapy. Understanding the reaction, identifying the thoughts and emotions behind it, and replacing those thoughts and reactions with more effective ones can be helpful.
Impact of Abreaction
Tips for Coping With Abreaction
• Be aware of triggers
• Practice calming techniques
• Find support
• Talk to a therapist
If you are experiencing spontaneous abreaction, consider talking to a therapist. They can safely guide your therapy and help you process emotions and memories with appropriate support.
