Episode 95 - Protect Your Ears - Reduce Your Risk of Tinnitus and Hearing Loss with Dr. Ben Thompson

02/10/23 • 29 min

Modern Aging

Do you or someone you know suffer from Tinnitus, otherwise known as that annoying constant ringing in the ear? What about hearing loss? Hearing matters to all of us, and its loss can be devastating as it can change our quality of life. When we lose our hearing, we are more likely to detract from social engagement and communication. We also are more likely to isolate ourselves from conversations, miss certain words and meanings, and less likely to engage in family gatherings because we can’t hear or are struggling to hear what people are saying.

Social isolation is linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Connecting with our family, friends and community is beneficial for our brains as it helps to keep our minds active and prevents atrophy. Without regular social or mental stimulation, our brains can start to lose their connections.

Taking care of our ears has a direct impact on the health of our brains. When we treat hearing loss, it can restore our communication functions, allowing us to stay socially engaged and active. This helps us maintain cognitive function and prevent dementia as we age. Ear health is the key to social engagement and a better quality of life.

In this episode, Dr. Ben Thompson, audiologist and founder of Treble Heath, provides useful insight on the causes of Tinnitus and hearing loss, as well as how to prevent it. He also shares the possible connections between hearing loss and dementia or Alzheimer's Disease and what steps we can take to reduce the risk of these illnesses. Having more knowledge will help us better prepare for any potential health issues that come our way.

Episode 94 - Unlock the Benefits of Mushrooms to Support Immune System and Healthy Aging with Nicole Pressly Wolf

When we want to take proactive steps to maintain our health and well-being, medicinal mushrooms can be a part of an ideal solution. Not only are they free of the side effects common with pharmaceutical drugs, but when combined with medications, mushrooms can help strengthen your immune system and restore balance in your body. A balanced body is less prone to disease and infection.

Mushrooms are a great way to take advantage of their medicinal benefits, as they contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, antibacterials, and other compounds that benefit your health. However, it is recommended that you buy organic mushrooms when possible; this will make sure they have not been exposed to any pesticides or chemicals that can alter the quality of their compounds. Medicinal mushrooms can be taken in many forms such as powder for teas or extracts capsule, powdered extracts, or tinctures.

In this episode, founder of West Wolf Medicinals Nicole Pressly Wolf explains the many benefits of adding mushrooms to your daily supplement routine. She suggests including varieties like Chaga, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Shiitake, Turkey Tail and Reishi to help promote healthy aging and overall well-being by supporting your immune system. If you are curious about what some of these mushrooms look like and want to watch the interview with Nicole, you can check it out on Modern Aging’s YouTube Channel, but if you want to listen, tune in above.

About Nicole Pressly Wolf -

Raised as a city girl and a lifelong environmental activist, journalist, and secret science nerd, Nicole never imagined she could farm or care directly for the earth beyond her written activism. Moving west, she wanted her next “career” to be intentional work in a practical and tactile environment, not in front of a computer. Oh, and yeah — for the benefit of all.

Now, with America's fungi awakening, Nicole has found her true way forward. Since the move, she has become fascinated with mushrooms and devoured books, films, and teachings. She attended numerous mushroom-growing workshops. Nicole started a daily supplement of powdered mushrooms looking for support with all that comes with aging, from brain power to general energy. Within weeks she noticed her memory had improved, and her energy was up. She was hooked! All that she has learned about the fungi kingdom inspires awe and wonder. Farming mushrooms and creating a permaculture farm has allowed her to offer health to her family, community, and the planet.
