Risa Morimoto

Welcome To The Modern Aging Podcast! If you are over 40 and are looking to optimize and elevate your health and well-being in holistic and innovative ways, then this is the podcast for you! Each week, we will share interviews with top experts in holistic health, wealth, body, mind and spirit. As an integrative health coach and avid traveler, I will share my findings with you and provide insightful tips on how we can live better and longer after 40. My mom had a massive stroke at 65 in 2001 and then developed Parkinson's Disease 10 years later. My dad was diagnosed with frontal temporal dementia in 2016. After caring for them for almost 20 years, I decided that this was not how I wanted to age so I started searching for different approaches to health. What I discovered is a treasure trove of endless holistic ways to approach our health and well-being that is better for us and the planet. It is proactive instead of reactive. It is taking care of our whole being, not just treating what is causing us pain. We have to look at our relationships, stress levels, work, family life, the whole kit n kaboodle as well as our nutrition and exercise. This is whole health living. We all want to grow old, but I think we can agree that we want to grow older and retain a healthy lifestyle, independence, and a high quality of life. That lifestyle starts today. So, join me every Friday. If you prefer video, many of the interviews were episodes on our YouTube Channel so you can check them out here - https://www.youtube.com/c/ModernAging. We all understand that meditation is beneficial to our overall well-being, but it isn't always easy to do. Stress can have a damaging effect on our body and mind, but fortunately, we can reduce its impact through meditation. Although it can be challenging to start meditating, just like building any muscle in the body, consistent practice will help strengthen the skill over time. With meditation, you'll be able to manage your thoughts more effectively and better respond emotionally to life's stressful situations.

Making meditation a habit can positively affect your life. To build the practice, start by choosing the easiest days and times for you to meditate regularly. Consider doing it in the morning, during lunch break, or in the evening, and always try to do it at the same time each day. Don't worry about picking the ideal time; just pick a consistent time that works for you and stick with it.

If it is difficult to calm your mind, Ariel Garten, the co-founder of Muse, a brain-sensing headband, shares how we can use brain wave technology to monitor when our brains are calm or when it is active. She helped to invent the Muse that you can use it at home to assist you with attaining that calm brain wave state.

Garten is co-founder of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain-sensing headband. Muse is an award-winning wearable technology that assists and trains meditation and mindfulness.

Before founding InteraXon, Ariel was not only trained as a neuroscientist and psychotherapist but also started her own international clothing line while she worked in labs researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. Her creativity and entrepreneurial head, combined with her fascination with the brain, led her to join forces with two like-minded friends, Chris and Trevor, to start InteraXon. Together they founded a Silicon Valley-backed startup that allowed people to control computers with their minds, the technology that sparked the creation of Muse. Her team’s technology has been featured in over 1000 media pieces, as well as was the feature showcase at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, an installation that allowed over 7,000 people to control the lights on the CN tower, Canadian parliament buildings, and Niagara Falls with their brains from across the country.

These days, Ariel can be found at home playing with her daughter or on stage across the world, speaking about happiness, meditation, understanding mental health, or telling her own innovation story, consistently giving her audiences the tools they need to help them become their best selves.

Do you or someone you know suffer from Tinnitus, otherwise known as that annoying constant ringing in the ear? What about hearing loss? Hearing matters to all of us, and its loss can be devastating as it can change our quality of life. When we lose our hearing, we are more likely to detract from social engagement and communication. We also are more likely to isolate ourselves from conversations, miss certain words and meanings, and less likely to engage in family gatherings because we can’t hear or are struggling to hear what people are saying.

Social isolation is linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Connecting with our family, friends and community is beneficial for our brains as it helps to keep our minds active and prevents atrophy. Without regular social or mental stimulation, our brains can start to lose their connections.

Taking care of our ears has a direct impact on the health of our brains. When we treat hearing loss, it can restore our communication functions, allowing us to stay socially engaged and active. This helps us maintain cognitive function and prevent dementia as we age. Ear health is the key to social engagement and a better quality of life.

In this episode, Dr. Ben Thompson, audiologist and founder of Treble Heath, provides useful insight on the causes of Tinnitus and hearing loss, as well as how to prevent it. He also shares the possible connections between hearing loss and dementia or Alzheimer's Disease and what steps we can take to reduce the risk of these illnesses. It is no secret that healthy diets give you the energy to perform tasks and increase your lifespan, while unhealthy foods cause inflammatory diseases and drain your pockets with medications and surgeries.

A healthy lifestyle indeed starts in the kitchen, but what should you not buy when in the supermarket? Which foods should be your priorities when shopping?

It is also important to acknowledge that a healthy diet alone is not enough to maintain good health. You need a healthy lifestyle encompassing regular physical exercise, stress reduction, socializing, adequate sleep, and a yearly physical checkup. You should pay attention to all those components because an unbalanced life is not a healthy life.

In this episode, Dr. Raj Anand helps us understand how to shop better and eat better for a healthy heart. We talk more about what food we should eat and, more importantly, what we should not be eating in order to take care of our hearts. Learn tips on how to go shopping with clarity of mind about what to put in the shopping cart and what not to include.

How are your magnesium levels? Probably, not that great. The truth is most of us do not have optimal magnesium levels, and that is where most of our diseases stem from. The immune system is one of the most important systems in your body to fight and prevent diseases. However, a strong immune system depends on a high vitamin D level, which is made active by a good amount of magnesium.

Shockingly, magnesium is our number one deficiency, with 80%-95% of us being extremely deficient. Your cortisol increases when you get stressed or frustrated, leading to magnesium loss through the urine. If you eat sugar, processed food and drink alcohol, it eats up your magnesium to process their digestion. Since our modern lifestyle is a threat to the magnesium levels in our bodies, we need to know how to offset that and live healthier.

In this episode, Kristen Bowen, the founder of Living the Good Life Naturally, joins us to share the importance of magnesium and why it is so essential for our body’s function. She explains her three and half years of a health crisis and how she cracked the code with magnesium.

Let’s jump in!

Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:

[02:00] Kristen’s journey of creating a healthy life naturally using magnesium

[05:53] Why is magnesium so essential to our health?

[08:07] What happens when we soak our bodies in magnesium? What is cell saturation?

[11:40] Finding out the power of magnesium during her three-and-a-half health crisis

[13:55] The best practices of soaking yourself in magnesium

[19:43] Why is magnesium chloride better for soaking than other types of magnesium?

[24:56] The top tier category of people who must soak in magnesium

[28:38] How do you test for your magnesium levels?

[34:14] Can you have magnesium over-saturation?

[38:08] How long it takes to reach optimum saturation?
