Mind Your Hormones - 4. The effect of ALCOHOL on your HORMONES, PMS & PCOS!
play

09/08/20 • 27 min

Today I'm chatting all about alcohol & your hormones! Here’s what to expect:

  1. How alcohol affects your hormones & PMS
  2. How it affects people with PCOS differently
  3. The most ideal time in your cycle to avoid drinking
  4. The “best/better” options of alcohol
  5. How to minimize the negative effects of alcohol

DETAILS & RESEARCH:

  • Alcohol increases estrogen production (even after 1 drink)
  • EXCESS ESTROGEN SYMPTOMS: Irregular or heavy periods, water retention, breast swelling and tenderness, headaches, migraines, fibrocystic breast changes, weight gain, mood swings, hair loss, painful periods ,PMS
  • Drinking makes you 45% MORE LIKELY to experience PMS symptoms if you’re having 1 drink a day.
  • More than 1 drink a day increases your PMS symptoms by 79%.
  • How it makes PMS worse
    • Dehydration
    • Depletes Magnesium
    • Fluctuates hormone levels
    • Keeps your liver busy so you can’t process hormones
    • Affects gut microbiome so you can’t eliminate hormones
    • Imbalanced blood sugar levels
  • Estrogen levels peak just before ovulation & about a week before your period starts, so those would be ideal times to avoid drinking.
  • AMOUNT THAT HAS THE BIGGEST EFFECT: 4 or more drinks in 2 hours, 5x a month
  • Women with PCOS have double the risk of getting non-alcoholic fatty liver disease compared to women without PCOS.

QUOTES:

  • “Long term consumption of alcohol shrinks the brain including the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that regulates the HPA axis or stress response system. This can result in a dysregulation of your stress response or HPA axis.” Period Repair Manual pg. 117 by Lara Briden ND.
  • “Alcohol impairs the healthy clearance of estrogen. Alcohol also causes insulin resistance, damages gut bacteria, prevents nutrient absorption, impairs detoxification, and depletes an important anti-inflammatory molecule called glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant and immune regulator. Every cell in your body makes glutathione and every cell needs it.” Period Repair Manual pg. 117 by Lara Briden ND.

Today is all about how we can support our mind + body as we transition from one season to the next. Just like nature shifts, we need to shift as well in order to stay grounded + be in balance.
I'm a summer forever girl so it's super important for me to be intentional MENTALLY of this transition.
Here are the 8 tips we go over:

  1. Review your routine: what’s working, what’s not working?
  2. What feelings do you want to have in this season: what’s your intention?
  3. Organize, clear out the old (clothes, junk drawer etc.), sage to clear out old energy.
  4. Add warming spices like cumin, paprika, ginger + cinnamon to your foods
  5. Cover your neck with scarfs to stay grounded from the Vata wind energy
  6. How can you create joy in a different way? Other ways to stay active?
  7. Put something fun on the calendar to look forward to!
  8. Get back into food/meal prepping

Mind Your Hormones - 45. Root causes of MIGRAINES & NATURAL relief.
play

02/23/21 • 21 min

I can’t wait for you to dive into today’s episode about all things migraines! I used to suffer monthly from debilitating migraines so I totally understand what you’re going through!

But it’s important to see where these migraines are coming from so we can address the root cause instead of putting a bandaid on the situation.

NSAIDS taken for migraines cause inflammation in your gut leading to leaky gut. They can also suppress ovulation, make headaches worse & put a bandaid on the root issue.

Hormonal headaches are cyclical and mostly occur just before or after your period, or around ovulation due to the spike in estrogen which triggers ovulation. I recommend tracking your migraines to pinpoint what’s going on.

NATURAL STRATEGIES

1. HYDRATING- 100oz a day with electrolytes

2. MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE- shown to prevent headaches- muscle relaxer, anti inflammatory & crucial for hormone health. 300mg daily- can increase to 600mg when you’re prone to getting a headache

3. VITAMIN B2 (riboflavin) has been shown to reduce the number of migraines people have but needs to be taken consistently- I recommend a b complex.

4. LIVER LOVING FOODS & FIBER: Liver breaks down & metabolizes hormones. Dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, brussels, cauliflower, cabbage, collards), root veggies (beets, sweet potatoes, carrots etc)

5. FEVERFEW- shows to prevent menstrual migraines-anti inflammatory herb- 25mg daily

6. Get rid of foods you’re sensitive too - sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol, (iGg delayed food allergies)

7. Yoga- increases circulation, reduces stress

Mind Your Hormones - 31. What's the deal with INTERMITTENT FASTING?!
play

01/05/21 • 15 min

I can’t wait for you to dive into this episode because it’s super important! There’s more and more talk on intermittent fasting and all of it’s benefits which I’m not denying! BUT there isn’t enough of a conversation about how it can ALSO DISRUPT OUR HORMONES.

To start, it’s crucial to have times when we aren’t eating. When you eat around the clock your body stays in storage mode. If it’s constantly taking in food- it can never burn sugar & fat so we need to make sure we have certain points of fasting.

Extended periods without food tell the body that now isn’t a good time for reproduction.

BUT you need to know that estrogen and progesterone do more in the body than just get us pregnant. Estrogen helps us with metabolism, weight loss, mood, anxiety and stress, energy, bone density, and cognitive function.

Intermittent fasting can disrupt estrogen balance and mess up these essential physiological processes.

Intermittent fasting has been associated with numerous health benefits (improved insulin sensitivity, reduced body fat, cognitive function, lower risk of chronic health conditions) but it is also linked to hormone disruption. Here’s a close-up look at the cascade of hormone imbalances that can start with intermittent fasting.

First, intermittent fasting can disrupt estrogen balance. Estrogen imbalance may show up as: low energy, poor glucose control, weight gain, impaired cognitive function, decreased bone density, poor muscle tone, reduced skin & hair health, poorer cardiovascular health, infertility.

A disruption in one hormone system in the body can trigger other hormone imbalances. The other major hormone considerations for women when it comes to intermittent fasting are cortisol, the stress hormone, and thyroid hormone. When cortisol is imbalanced, symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Low energy
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling wired-but-tired
  • sugar cravings

Imbalanced thyroid hormones symptoms include:

  • Weight gain
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Dry hair
  • Irregular periods
  • Trouble regulating body temperature
