Madam Athlete - Letting Your Career Evolve with You with Sports Medicine Physician Rebecca Breslow

Letting Your Career Evolve with You with Sports Medicine Physician Rebecca Breslow

04/19/22 • 40 min

Madam Athlete

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician and Head of Content for gWell, Dr. Rebecca Breslow about letting your career evolve with you.
Rebecca’s journey has been anything but straightforward. From studying art in college before going to med school to later leaving medicine only to return after running an injury prevention business for runners, Rebecca has always chosen the path that best reflects what’s right for her at that particular moment in life.
We talk about:

  • How Sarah defined her values and used them to guide her through every twist and turn of her career.
  • The parallels of embracing the uncomfortable both in sports and in life to meet goals and pursue new opportunities.
  • Her focus on the process, rather than the result, led to her current role with gWell, where she can help share information on the many facets of sports medicine with a wide audience.

Giving Yourself Permission

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking about giving yourself permission.
The quick summary is that women are socialized to seek permission from others and to value other people's opinions more than our own. This can lead to self-doubt and guilt and anxiety and I'm not having that!
So in today's episode I talk about the useful tool of giving yourself permission. Because you are in charge of your thoughts, your decisions, and your actions. And it's time to start tuning in to your inner voice and your personal opinion of yourself.
I even created a fun little permission slip you can use to help remind yourself that you're the boss and the only authorized signature that matters is yours.

Showing Up as Yourself with Professor of Sport Psychology Lindsey Blom

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Sport Psychology Professor Dr. Lindsey Blom about showing up as yourself.

Lindsey is the current president of the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) and a professor of sport and exercise psychology at Ball State University. Her work focuses on using sport for social change to promote peace at the individual, community, and international levels. From the outside, it looks like Lindsey has pursued this path with laser-sharp focus, but she always had some doubts on the inside. It wasn’t until much later on that Lindsey realized the full value of showing up as her full self in her career.

We talk about:

  • How Lindsey learned to recognize her own strengths and passions, just like she had done with students and mentees, and show up as her true self in her work.
  • How prioritizing your own self-care includes accepting when others need to prioritize their own self-care as well.
  • How Lindsey overcame the feeling that she or her research were not good enough and stopped comparing herself to others.
