On today’s episode I’m talking all things professional development. What it is. What it really is, or what it should be! Because I believe, that professional development starts with personal development. It must be intentional. It starts with your purpose and your mission and grows from there. And true personal or professional development helps you grow as a person, beyond simply learning new knowledge. Personal development keeps you engaged and interested and is a vital component of having a healthy and fulfilling career.
I talk about:

  • Moving beyond knowledge-focused continuing education
  • Putting personal development first, like leadership skills, having difficult conversations, time management...
  • Being intentional with your plans for personal and professional development
  • Both formal and informal ways to get after your own development goals

On today’s episode, I’m talking to the Cleveland Guardian’s Assistant Director for Player Development, Jen Wolf, about making your own luck.
Jen currently works with the Guardians where she’s taking a holistic approach to player development. She’s spent her whole career in baseball, previously working with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals as well as in the Commissioner’s office. It all started when Jen was in high school, working at a bagel shop where the GM of the Red Sox was a regular. She took a chance and told him she was interested in working in baseball and began an internship before college. Jen has built her career by making the most of every opportunity presented to her and setting up the conditions for success.
We talk about:

  • Taking advantage of jobs we might not be excited about as opportunities to learn new skills
  • Finding a job that allows us to take on the projects that we’re passionate about full-time rather than on top of our other roles
  • How women and non-binary people can use their networks to understand if a workplace is really as inclusive as it claims

On today’s episode, I’m talking to coach and Paralympian Stephanie Wheeler about going where you’re valued.

Stephanie is the head coach of the women’s wheelchair basketball team at the University of Illinois. An alum of the program herself, winning three national championships, as well as being a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Stephanie is no stranger to success. Despite her success, she has still faced discrimination and is one of the few women head coaches, and one of the very few head coaches with a disability, in a sports world that continues to be dominated by men. After leading Team USA to a gold medal at the Rio Paralympics as the head coach, Stephanie decided to focus all her energy on coaching her team at Illinois, where she could live out her values in an environment that supported her as a whole human being.

We talk about:

  • How you can’t do what you can’t see and Stephanie’s journey from first meeting a woman athlete with a disability as a teenager to becoming an athlete herself, and then a coach and mentor to other athletes like herself.
  • Why defining our values helps us to create identities outside of our jobs and sport.
  • Stephanie’s ongoing work to overcome internalized sexism, ableism, and homophobia and divest from the voices that don’t matter.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Dr. Kate Jochimsen about mentorship.
I’m especially excited to share this interview because Dr. Jochimsen is junior faculty, early in her career, but has so much wisdom and insight already. And it’s nice to hear from someone at this earlier stage as they are going through it all. Kate is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research for the Division of Athletic Training at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine. Kate was the first in her family to go to college, and then kept going - getting her Masters, PhD, and completing a post-doc, before taking her current academic position. Through all this, Kate is no stranger to the benefits of what good mentorship can do. She shares what to look for in a mentor, staying teachable, and the rewards of watching that relationship morph into collaborators.
We talk about:

  • The extra challenges faced by first-gen college students, like herself, who need to work a little harder to find out the next steps at each turn through their education.
  • Reframing choices in our careers as opportunities that are neither good or bad, but just different.
  • How being a successful academic means becoming comfortable with failure and learning to separate your worth from your work.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Dr. Rathna Nuti, a sports medicine physician.
Rathna is the founder and owner of her own sports medicine practice. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor but never anticipated that she would be an entrepreneur and start her own practice. Rathna shares the influence from mentors throughout her life that led her first to family medicine and then to completing a fellowship in sports medicine. While still early in her career, Rathna made the decision to break away from the world of corporate medicine and venture out to start her own practice. In addition to her practice, she serves as a team physician for the Dallas Stars and South Stars FC.
We talk about:

  • Having mentors in your field who are a few steps ahead in the process
  • Taking career inspiration from family members who know you best
  • How being independent doesn’t mean going for it alone

On today’s episode, I’m talking with Katrina Campbell, an NCAA DI equipment manager.

Katrina is currently the Assistant Athletics Director for Equipment, and Head Equipment Manager, for North Carolina A&T State University, where she initially got her degree in Physical Education with plans to go into sports medicine. She signed on with the Air Force for an ROTC scholarship and the military had other plans for her, and she ended up a Logistics Readiness Officer. In that role she managed a team of 169 individuals and over $20 million in military assets. Which if you can imagine, was the perfect preparation for going into athletic equipment management where she has thrived.

We talk about

  • Her unique journey through the military and how it prepared her for her current role in athletic equipment
  • Having an attitude of always seeing what you can do, which was especially helpful when going through breast cancer after losing her mother and sister to the disease
  • How she keeps room for growth, including going back to school to get her MBA and currently going after her PhD

The Madam Athlete podcast has turned 50!
50 episodes that is :)
On today's episode I'm taking you behind the scenes of Madam Athlete. What I've been up to, what took me so long to get started, and what I'm trying next...
And since a lot of the answer to "what took me so long" is Perfectionism, that's where I'm starting off this new episode type - where once a month, I'll be talking to you directly and taking a deeper dive into one of the many topics that come up over and over again with my guests and their careers.
I'm starting with Perfectionism today, and how setting unrealistic goals that you can't meet can cause you to doubt yourself, and then lose faith in yourself, and combining that with a lack of self-compassion, can be a vicious cycle of disappointment. And while some of us used perfectionism to get ahead in our careers, over time, it's a set up for failure and the fear of failure can stop you in your tracks.
I share one of my tips for breaking free from that vicious cycle, and if you'd like a couple more, I created a free download with my top three favorite tips to fighting off perfectionism so you can move forward with that project, that new venture, and your life.
Download your free copy and you can use emergency hack #1 right away to start making forward progress today.

FRIENDS! AI came up with that title and it is hard not what I would have chosen for myself 🤣
*Alternative title (human generated): Taking the Time to Learn New Skills or Giselle F*s around with AI
AI generated episode description with [my comments] thrown in all over the place because, again, WTF AI?:
Ever wondered how AI is revolutionizing the podcasting landscape and professional sports? You're about to find out. [I mean, you're not. I talk about how we need to take time to learn new skills in our careers to make sure we're still developing and not staying stagnant. I talk abut how hard it is to overcome the inertia of doing things the same way you've always been doing things.] Join us as we share our personal experiences of how AI is impacting our podcasting business, from generating captions to crafting engaging content. If you've ever felt resistance in breaking away from established systems and processes, we’ll walk you through the importance of harnessing a growth mindset to embrace novel ideas. We even delve into the creation of a dot phrase, revealing how a little upfront effort can save you time in the long run. [Rest of this is true, and oh, Epic, what fun!]
Our conversations move from the world of podcasting to the arena of professional sports, as we reflect on how being open to new methodologies can be a game-changer. Remember that strength and conditioning coach who introduced blood flow restriction training 11 years ago? [Haha, yeah, do you remember that guy?? Probably not if you didn't work with me, but I do talk about how we integrate new knowledge and skills and the work settings that might make that easier or harder.] We discuss how such unconventional strategies can revolutionize athletes' performance. [Eh, not so much.] We also debate on the philosophical implications of AI and its potential to be the next big thing in knowledge enhancement and skill acquisition. [I mean I specifically said I didn't want to get the philosophical debate, but yes, I did talk about AI as potentially being the next evolution in knowledge enhancement.]
And that's not all! We also explore how AI can support women in sports and athletics, its usage in social media, and the challenges and excitement of using AI for generating podcast content. Ever thought of using a chatbot to come up with an engaging podcast episode title, intro music, or show notes? We did just that! [And I might be regretting it!] Listen in as we embark on our intriguing journey, allowing AI to create our podcast title [again, see regrets], show notes, and social media posts. Our discussions seek to inspire you to break away from inertia, embrace change, and upgrade your skills to soar in this AI-dominated era.

Hi friend! It’s Giselle. I’m jumping on here real quick to remind you that I’m taking a break after over three plus years of weekly episodes to rest, reset, and recalibrate. In case you need a little woman in sports career journey wisdom while I’m away, I’ve pulled this episode from the archives.
This conversation with Christa Stout aired in March 2022 and it is the most downloaded episode of all time. So you’re going to love it. I know I did.
Since the last episode, Christa is still with the Portland Trail Blazers but has now advanced to the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer. This past year she’s helped launch the organization’s new G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix.
Enjoy!
Episode 87:
On today’s episode, I’m talking to the Portland Trail Blazers’ Senior Vice President of Innovation & Technology Christa Stout.
Christa played 5 sports in high school and 3 in college. She has traveled internationally doing development work and has seen the value of sport for social change. Because of a persistent interest in corporate social responsibility, Christa decided to go to business school. As a generalist trying to find her future career, a professor advised her to list out exactly what she was looking for in a job. By considering the qualities she needed in the workplace instead of the job title, Christa found exactly what she was looking for working in professional sports, working first with the Portland Timbers and now the Portland Trail Blazers.
We talk about:
●How taking advantage of every opportunity that came her way in international development, gives Christa more skills than she could ever list on a resume.
●How taking the time to define her values and the qualities she needed in her workplace helped Christa find great jobs after business school.
●The importance of keeping a growth mindset to continue learning the ins and outs of every task as a generalist responsible for leading specialists in their fields.
