Finding a Job that Shares Your Values with UConn Women’s Basketball Sports Performance Director Andrea Hudy
Madam Athlete
12/20/22 • 46 min
On today’s episode, I’m talking to Director of Sports Performance for UConn Women’s Basketball Andrea Hudy about finding a job that shares your values.
Throughout her career, Andrea has sought out opportunities to make sure she has the skills and the knowledge to provide her athletes with personalized programs to stay healthy and on the court. With UConn women’s basketball, she’s found an environment that celebrates the same values as her and has given her an opportunity to live out her mission.
We talk about:
- How Andrea’s approach to injury is shaped by her own experiences as an injured athlete.
- How her curiosity and desire to share knowledge has led her to take on additional degrees and research opportunities.
- How Andrea’s using her work towards her PhD as an opportunity to seek out mentorship and collaborate with leaders in other fields.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports sociologist Dr. Andrea Bundon about telling a story through research.
Andrea is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of British Columbia where she studies the intersections of sport, physical activity, health, disability, and social inclusion. While a grad student, she began guiding visually impaired skiers and served as a guide at the 2010 and 2014 Paralympics Games. This experience shaped her research and the rest of her career.
We talk about:
- How Andrea quickly found that athletes with disabilities are always advocates, just by participating in sports, and that this work can take many forms.
- While at the Paralympics, she saw fewer women than men participating and this drew attention to the loopholes and lack of pathways that keep women out of sports.
- Identifying and working on tasks that are most important and not just focusing on tasks that are the most urgent.

How to Define Success for Yourself
Madam Athlete
07/12/22 • 29 min
Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking all about how you can define success for yourself and why it's so important.
Here's the thing...
Most of us get our definitions of success from others. From society, from external expectations, from history, from a patriarchal white male, cis-gendered, hetero, ableist prism.
But what if you defined success for yourself?
Based off your own unique values, your own unique mission & vision, and your own unique goals?
What would that look like?
Listen to today's episode where I shine a light on how to define success for yourself, why it's important, how it ties into getting after your goals, and share some personal examples.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician and Head of Content for gWell, Dr. Rebecca Breslow about letting your career evolve with you.
Rebecca’s journey has been anything but straightforward. From studying art in college before going to med school to later leaving medicine only to return after running an injury prevention business for runners, Rebecca has always chosen the path that best reflects what’s right for her at that particular moment in life.
We talk about:
- How Sarah defined her values and used them to guide her through every twist and turn of her career.
- The parallels of embracing the uncomfortable both in sports and in life to meet goals and pursue new opportunities.
- Her focus on the process, rather than the result, led to her current role with gWell, where she can help share information on the many facets of sports medicine with a wide audience.

Giving Yourself Permission
Madam Athlete
04/12/22 • 17 min
Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking about giving yourself permission.
The quick summary is that women are socialized to seek permission from others and to value other people's opinions more than our own. This can lead to self-doubt and guilt and anxiety and I'm not having that!
So in today's episode I talk about the useful tool of giving yourself permission. Because you are in charge of your thoughts, your decisions, and your actions. And it's time to start tuning in to your inner voice and your personal opinion of yourself.
I even created a fun little permission slip you can use to help remind yourself that you're the boss and the only authorized signature that matters is yours.

Today I’m talking to sports medicine physiatrist Monica Rho.
Monica is the Chief of Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She also serves as a team physician for the US Women’s National Soccer Team.
We talk about:
- How Monica’s mission has been to take care of and listen to female athletes ever since she was a young athlete athlete who felt like her injuries were dismissed.
- How finding the right training environment at any point in your career includes finding mentors who are invested in your development.
- Monica's unique opportunity to serve as an ambassador for If/Then, an organization looking to provide female role models in STEM to young girls.

Today I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Shelley Street Callender.
Shelley is a team physician and Chief of Sports Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at Mercer University. While she was training in internal medicine and pediatrics, Shelley never thought that sports medicine was in her future. That all changed when she started working with a local high school girls' basketball team. Many years later, she’s working as a team physician and helping to encourage the next generation to get after their dreams.
We talk about:
- The encouragement from her family and mentors that helped her pursue a career path she had never seen before
- How following her passion at every turn led her to where she is today.
- Finding a home and a support network within AMSSM and the honor of serving as a board member.

Replay: Leading as a Generalist with Trail Blazers’ Senior VP of Innovation & Technology Christa Stout
Madam Athlete
12/05/23 • 62 min
Hi friend! It’s Giselle. I’m jumping on here real quick to remind you that I’m taking a break after over three plus years of weekly episodes to rest, reset, and recalibrate. In case you need a little woman in sports career journey wisdom while I’m away, I’ve pulled this episode from the archives.
This conversation with Christa Stout aired in March 2022 and it is the most downloaded episode of all time. So you’re going to love it. I know I did.
Since the last episode, Christa is still with the Portland Trail Blazers but has now advanced to the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer. This past year she’s helped launch the organization’s new G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix.
Enjoy!
Episode 87:
On today’s episode, I’m talking to the Portland Trail Blazers’ Senior Vice President of Innovation & Technology Christa Stout.
Christa played 5 sports in high school and 3 in college. She has traveled internationally doing development work and has seen the value of sport for social change. Because of a persistent interest in corporate social responsibility, Christa decided to go to business school. As a generalist trying to find her future career, a professor advised her to list out exactly what she was looking for in a job. By considering the qualities she needed in the workplace instead of the job title, Christa found exactly what she was looking for working in professional sports, working first with the Portland Timbers and now the Portland Trail Blazers.
We talk about:
●How taking advantage of every opportunity that came her way in international development, gives Christa more skills than she could ever list on a resume.
●How taking the time to define her values and the qualities she needed in her workplace helped Christa find great jobs after business school.
●The importance of keeping a growth mindset to continue learning the ins and outs of every task as a generalist responsible for leading specialists in their fields.
