Madam Athlete - How to Define Success for Yourself

How to Define Success for Yourself

07/12/22 • 29 min

Madam Athlete

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking all about how you can define success for yourself and why it's so important.
Here's the thing...
Most of us get our definitions of success from others. From society, from external expectations, from history, from a patriarchal white male, cis-gendered, hetero, ableist prism.
But what if you defined success for yourself?
Based off your own unique values, your own unique mission & vision, and your own unique goals?
What would that look like?
Listen to today's episode where I shine a light on how to define success for yourself, why it's important, how it ties into getting after your goals, and share some personal examples.

Doing What You Love with LA Rams’ Sport Psychologist Carrie Hastings

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Sport Psychologist for the LA Rams, Carrie Hastings, about doing what you love.
Carrie is a licensed clinical and sports psychologist who has her own private practice in addition to being the team sport psychologist for the LA Rams. Through her work, she helps athletes at all levels sharpen their mental performance skills while also evaluating their relationship with their sport. By doing what she loves, Carrie helps athletes get back to doing what it is they love.
We talk about:

  • The ways that a sports psychologist could have helped Carrie in her own athletic career and how she seeks to fill that role for current athletes.
  • How taking detours early in your career can help you define your mission and vision and provides you with skills that transfer to the next step.
  • How Carrie’s working to normalize taking care of your mental health, not just in the NFL, but in youth and high school sports as well, setting up a new generation with good habits.

As we talk about in the episode, knowing and defining your values helps you make sure your work is in alignment with your values - which means getting to do work that you love. I created a free exercise to help you identify your personal values so you can start taking ownership of your career ASAP.
Grab your free exercise to start pinning down your key values today!

Telling a Story Through Research with Sports Sociologist Andrea Bundon

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports sociologist Dr. Andrea Bundon about telling a story through research.
Andrea is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of British Columbia where she studies the intersections of sport, physical activity, health, disability, and social inclusion. While a grad student, she began guiding visually impaired skiers and served as a guide at the 2010 and 2014 Paralympics Games. This experience shaped her research and the rest of her career.
We talk about:

  • How Andrea quickly found that athletes with disabilities are always advocates, just by participating in sports, and that this work can take many forms.
  • While at the Paralympics, she saw fewer women than men participating and this drew attention to the loopholes and lack of pathways that keep women out of sports.
  • Identifying and working on tasks that are most important and not just focusing on tasks that are the most urgent.
