Episode #147: Awais Spall: Functional Ayurveda, Peptides, and Microbiome Optimization
04/11/23 • 76 min
Did you know that the health of your microbiome affects your mental health, metabolism, and immune system? There's really no part of your body that's not affected by your microbiome health.
I’m joined by Awais Spall, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. We’re discussing how he combines Ayurveda, Functional Medicine, and peptides to create a protocol that helps optimize the health of the microbiome. If you’re new to the system of Ayurveda, you’ll want to tune in as we deep dive into the definition of Ayurveda and the three doshas it consists of.
Awais Spall FDN-P is a Functional Medicine practitioner based out of Santa Monica, CA. Prior to becoming a health practitioner, Awais worked as a formulation chemist for various cannabis companies. As a product formulator, Awais combined his knowledge of formulation chemistry with his background in Ayurvedic Herbalism. Awais has inherited much of his knowledge around Ayurveda from his grandfather, who was a renowned herbalist in Pakistan.
In his practice at Integrative Oasis, Awais combines the cutting edge science of Functional Medicine with Ayurveda to address various gut health issues.
What we discuss:
00:01:01 - What brought Awais to combine Ayurveda, Functional Medicine, and peptides
00:03:44 - The definition of Ayurveda
00:05:35 - The three elements of Ayurveda
00:09:51 - Microbiome medicine
00:13:48 - The microbiome and probiotics
00:18:22 - How nutrition is part of the microbiome
00:25:56 - Tests for helping people with their microbiome medicine
00:32:16 - What would a microbiome medicine protocol look like?
00:37:02 - The different forms lymphatic drainage
00:43:52 - How peptides fit into Integrative Oasis
00:52:07 - How people could be using peptides wrong
00:57:34 - The art of microbiome medicine
Key Takeaways:
- The word Ayurveda is a conjugation of two words: 'ayus', meaning 'life' and 'veda', meaning 'science'. Ayurveda is defined as the science of how to live your life, and your mind, body, and spirit play a role in Ayurveda.
- The three doshas of Ayurveda are vata, kapha, and pitta. It is possible to be a combination of two or even all three of these doshas, and there are tests to determine which one a person is.
- Part of optimizing your microbiome health is reconditioning the gut by strategically weeding things out, and then taking probiotics appropriately.

Episode #146: Ari Whitten, M.S.: The Blueprint to Optimizing Your Mitochondria
We’ve all heard mitochondria described as “the powerhouse of the cell”. But what we know now is that mitochondria have a second role beyond being energy generators, and are of central importance in human physiology.
Today we’re discussing everything you need to know about mitochondria, specifically how the story of energy and the story of aging are very much centered around the health of our mitochondria.
I’m joined by Ari Whitten, M.S., the founder of The Energy Blueprint. We take a deep dive into how mitochondria work, including the second role they play as environmental sensors. If you struggle with chronic fatigue, you’ll want to tune in to learn how mitochondria is impacting your energy levels, and what you can do about it.
Ari Whitten, M.S. is the best-selling author of The Ultimate Guide To Red Light Therapy, and Eat For Energy: How To Beat Fatigue, and Supercharge Your Mitochondria For All-Day Energy. He has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist, has completed extensive graduate training in Clinical Psychology, and holds a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine.
What we discuss:
00:02:46 - How to start with supporting your mitochondria
00:11:28 - How mitochondria can impact your energy levels
00:18:27 - Why losing mitochondria is not a natural product of aging
00:22:22 - Ways to maintain mitochondria
00:25:20 - Melatonin production
00:30:06 - Light exposure and melatonin production
00:41:33 - Supporting your mitochondria at the foundational level
00:47:57 - EMF sensitivity
00:56:04 - The blueprint to optimizing your mitochondria
01:02:49 - The most powerful supplements for optimizing your mitochondria
Key Takeaways:
- All the things that boost our mitochondrial capacity for energy production are also going to translate into increased longevity and resistance to disease.
- The loss of mitochondria is not a natural product of aging, but is the result of modern lifestyles. Challenging your mitochondria by living a more active lifestyle will help support and rebuild your mitochondrial networks as you get older.
- Mitochondria have a second role beyond their role as energy generators, and that is as environmental sensors. Not only are the mitochondria actually producing energy, they are making the decision on whether or not to produce that energy.

Episode #148: Kyal Van Der Leest: Liver Health, Gut Health, and Detoxification
If we look back at the last 200 years, we can see that human evolution was not designed to deal with the drugs, chemicals, and pollutants that are part of the modern day world. This is why it is so important to support liver health for our overall well-being.
The liver is basically our processing plant for toxins. And it all comes back to gut health - when we have negative bacteria in our gut, that directly affects our liver detoxification pathways.
I’m joined by Kyal Van Der Leest, founder of LVLUP Health. We’re discussing everything you need to know about how to optimize your liver health, and how it connects to the health of your gut. We also dive into the skin issues that can arise from the body releasing toxins, and how if your detox pathways aren't optimized, your skin is ultimately not going to look as good as it could.
Kyal Van Der Leest is a nutritionist, naturopath, and functional health coach turned formulator who now runs LVLUP Health. He founded LVLUP Health to create powerful cutting edge supplement tools that people could use to improve their health using the unique formulations that combine orally bioavailable peptides with naturopathic botanicals and nutritional supplement ingredients.
What we discuss:
00:02:29 - Why all health begins in the gut
00:04:35 - The different phases of detoxification
00:11:25 - Are detox products beneficial?
00:19:58 - The Complete Liver Complex
00:26:24 - How TUDCA works
00:33:29 - How releasing toxins can result in skin issues
00:40:44 - How AHK supports the culture networks of the skin
00:44:00 - Botox-like peptides
00:50:21 - How Botox can have an effect on your liver
01:02:28 - How the peptide Svetinorm is beneficial for the liver
Key Takeaways:
- Svetinorm is a bio-regulator peptide that has beneficial effects on the liver, such as supporting protein synthesis.
- When we have negative bacteria in our gut, that directly affects our liver detoxification pathways. By focusing on optimizing the health of our gut, we can lift some of the burden being put on our liver, and help support the detoxification process.
- By supporting gut health, you will indirectly support skin health, too. If you don't have the inflammation from the gut, then you're less likely to be inflamed in the skin.
