Coach or Consultant: What’s the Difference? (Danny Iny)
10/20/21 • 27 min
1 Listener
In the coaching world, there's a bit of dogma around non-directive coaching according to Danny Iny, CEO of Mirasee. Also, the way he sees it, there are many similarities between a great coach and a great consultant, but huge differences between poor ones.
In this illuminating episode, Danny Iny, CEO of Mirasee, and Melinda discuss the dogma around directive vs. non-directive coaching and why he believes it isn’t either-or. He elaborates on how the hybrid version of the coach and consultant can be the best solution for your clients. And also explores the best practices for helping your client determine exactly what they need.
In this episode we discuss:
- The similarities and differences between a coach and a consultant.
- Whether the coach/consultant or the client has the authority in the relationship.
- When having a coach or consultant is most beneficial. And what Danny means when he says that a hybrid of these is often the best solution.
- Directive versus non-directive coaching.
- If strategy belongs in the coaching conversation.
- The best practices for working with your client to determine exactly what they need.
“I'm not saying that you want to be directive all the time, but I think in the coaching world, there's a bit of a dogma around non-directive coaching and never giving advice that I think just doesn't really hold water.”
“As much as mindset plays a huge role in your ability to get things done, I find that the umbrella of mindset is often a crutch for people to create excuses about why they're not getting things done.”– Danny Iny
Danny Iny, CEO of Mirasee
Guest Bio: Danny Iny is an educator, author, and entrepreneur who is on a mission to reimagine business and transform education. His love-hate relationship with education began when he dropped out of high school at age 15 to start his first business. His frustrations with education were driven home many years later when he completed his MBA from Queen’s University School of Business.
As the founder and CEO of Mirasee, a business education company, Danny has developed innovative training programs that have raised the bar for online education. These include the Course Builder’s Laboratory, Business Ignition Bootcamp, and ACES Club. Over 5,000 value-driven entrepreneurs have enrolled in these programs.
Danny is a sought-after expert known for his knowledge, insights, and integrity. His published books include Leveraged Learning, Teach and Grow Rich, The Audience Revolution, and Engagement from Scratch!
He has guest lectured at institutions including McGill and Yale universities and has spoken on stage at various industry conferences and at Mirasee’s biannual live event, LIFT. His writing has appeared on Inc, Copyblogger, Success, and other websites.
Danny’s entrepreneurial journey has had many twists and turns. He built Mirasee after his previous startup imploded in 2008, leaving him $250K in debt. But he’s fond of saying that “failure is only failure if it happens in the last chapter; otherwise, it’s a plot twist.”
Today, Mirasee is a seven-figure business with 30+ employees distributed all over the world.
His latest book, Online Courses: A Business Parable About How to Create Freedom by Teaching Your Gift, is based on a decade of research, testing, and working with thousands of students. Online Courses reveal the opportunities and challenges for online course creators in today’s market, where people around the world are waking up to the power and excitement of online education.

Perfectionism: Friend or Foe? (Joy Torchia)
Episode summary: A common perception is that perfectionism is the same as striving to be your best. Joy Torchia, the founder of Torchlight Life Design Coaching & Consulting, thinks it’s a trait to become aware of and overcome. But is there any situation in which perfectionism can serve you? Can perfectionism be a friend? Or is it always a fear-based foe? And why is it so hard to change the pattern of perfectionism that is blocking you from moving forward?
In this episode, Melinda Cohan talks to Joy about perfectionism and how it impacts our coaching businesses. Joy believes that giving grace and space is important when dealing with perfectionism, but also believes that we should keep pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones. As she says, “There's no comfort in the growth zone, and there's no growth in the comfort zone.”
Joy is a certified personal development coach and a well-respected and award-winning communications strategist.
