I always thought my identity was tied to the roles life handed me—a daughter, a mother, a friend. But what happens when the attachments that once shaped us begin to restrict our growth? In our latest episode, we embark on a heartfelt exploration of generational healing, breaking cycles, and the role of attachments in self-discovery journeys.

From navigating the cultural identity clashes of staying with family beyond 18 to the comfort and challenges of familiar relationships, we share personal stories from the Dominican community, Latino community, and Caribbean perspectives that highlight how these attachments can sometimes hold us back from what truly serves us. We reflect on the courage it takes to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown—a journey that is both daunting and liberating.

Our conversation also touches on the profound impact of attachments on self-identity. Being the eldest sibling in a first-generation American household can lead to people-pleasing tendencies, and career ties often dictate self-worth. Personal anecdotes reveal the struggle of losing oneself in roles such as a parent or spouse, emphasizing the need for balance between personal needs and these identities. We also delve into the emotional weight of losing a parent, underscoring the necessity of reassessing attachments to ensure they contribute positively to our lives. These thought-provoking discussions highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy balance to nurture one’s personal and cultural journey.

As the episode unfolds, we explore spiritual growth and the shift from religious structures to a more personal, freeing connection with a higher power. While institutions like Catholicism offer community and identity, they can also impose constraints that stifle personal expansion. We candidly discuss our decisions to detach from these structures, choosing instead a direct, personal relationship with spirituality. Letting go of rigid expectations in relationships, careers, and belief systems can open new opportunities for mindset and motivation, cultural empowerment, and clarity.

Join us in this uplifting, provocative, and elevated conversation, where we challenge old narratives, raise awareness, and redefine attachments. If you're ready to navigate two cultures, embrace authentic conversations, and step into your highest self, this episode is for you. Tune in to familiar voices, elevate your frequency, and take the next step in your personal growth.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

We started the show because Damaris had a spark of an idea to do a podcast modeled after our everyday conversations between sisters. Our show topics are things we discuss regularly with each other. We not only wanted to discuss these life events, but we also wanted to share our solutions (sometimes with the added voice of an expert guest).

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

If you're looking for updates on current events, world news, or pop culture, THIS ain't it. But if you want to uplift your vibrations, live your divine purpose, and have fun at the same time, then this is IT. Don't get us wrong, this isn't the love and light show; it's the tough talk show with drops of lightheartedness.

Which episode should someone start with?

The first episode, Establishing Boundaries, gives you a taste of the show's vibe and our sisterly dynamic.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

All of our episodes with a guest. The ones below pull in a lot of our shared experiences. S1 E2: Code-Switching: A Life Hack, S1 E13: Navigating Boundaries, S1 E14: Cultural Legacy: Caribbean Identity + History, S1 E15: Dis You? pt. 1, S1 E16: Dis You? pt. 2

Which episode are you most proud of?

All of them. We want to thank us for believing in us!

What is your vision for your show?

We want to help people from being distracted by all the noise from society and focus on what makes them happy--their purpose in life. So we use our show to facilitate that for others.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Damaris' husband has always pointed out that she gets very loud when on the phone with family and friends, but he just didn't understand that is how Dominicans communicate. Now he knows. Knowing is half the battle.

Tell us a bit about yourself

'I'm Not Yelling! I'm Dominican' podcast is hosted by Nachi and Damaris, two Dominican-American sisters raised in The Bronx, New York. We share our experiences growing up in two separate cultures, which sometimes brought conflict when adapting to American traditions. Still, we take much pride in our roots. Through weekly fun conversations with friends and family, we explore everyday life topics that have shaped our lives and talk about alternatives to vibing higher from our unique perspective.
