Ep. 7 - with Rebecca Hopkins, Balance Me
03/27/20 • 40 min
Rebecca co-founded the award-winning www.balanceme.com @balancemeskincare with her sister Claire 15 years ago. Propelled from making foot scrubs for corporate days into a pop up store in Top Shop they have gone on to supply John Lewis, Boots, Waitrose and many more stores. I met Rebecca in 2015 through the power of chat, rose chocolate and her fab rose products!
Both sisters had ‘previous lives’ before they found themselves starting Balanceme.Rebecca’s chapters include working for L’Oreal and training as a reflexologist.
Our chat includes the challenges they faced with the business during this time and how they have adapted it to keep growing, the changing and evolving landscape of women in business, ‘green washing’ in the natural beauty industry, Rebecca’s thoughts on the words success and failure ... and more.
My book recommendation: ‘A Bit of a Stretch – The Diaries of a Prisoner’ Chris Atkins. Chocolate: Green & Black’s 85%
Quote: ‘Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all’ Helen Keller
Chocolate: Green & Black 85%

Ep. 6 - with Alex Pang, Author
Alex Soojung-Kim Pang (@askpang) is author to three titles including ‘Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less’ and ‘The Distraction Addiction’. ‘Shorter: How working less will revolutionise the way your company gets things done’ is his latest book released in the UK early March 2019. All three have been translated into more than a dozen languages, and Alex Pang’s work has been reviewed by New York time, New Yorker, Financial Time and Guardian. As well as writing, Alex Pang runs his consultation company ‘Strategy & Rest’ (www.strategy.rest) in California.
I went to hear Alex talk at the Sunday Times ‘Life Lessons’ event in the Barbican in Feb. My mind was captivated by hearing about Alex’s research and the exciting concept of working a 4-day week. Oh and before you ask ... WITHOUT working longer days or extra hours.
Following some social media banter with Alex I struck gold! Alex was fantastic and volunteered to be a guest on Hope & Patience. A chance for us to have our very own Q&A with the guy. My challenge was to read the, at that time, unpublished 310-page book over an evening and early morning before the interview that day. I did it ... I can honestly say it was an easy read and full of absolute gems.
Alex and I chat about how the shorter week can work, early global adopters of it and the benefits employers and employees have noticed. These include Michelin starred restaurants and care homes ... as well as software, advertising and design companies. Many of which now use it as their USP. We also discuss the challenges of its roll out too.
Alex share’s his tips of what to tell you clients, how to do the initial roll out and a heap more too. I make sure that those of us who are sole operators/solopreneurs get some advice too.
It really is a jam-packed episode where you will learn a lot. I promise!
My book recommendation for this episode had to be Alex’s latest book: Shorter, Work Better, Smarter
Chocolate: Posh pick n mix from Fortnum & Mason!

Ep. 8 - with Ama Clarke, Lucocoa Chocolate
Ama Clarke was the first bean-to-bar producer in London when she founded her award-winning www.lucocoachocolate.com @lucocoachocolate back in 2015. Her chocolate bars are sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and the superfood lucuma (a fruit from Peru). Stockists include Wholefoods and Nobu Hotel.
I met Ama several years ago on the shop floor in Wholefoods, Kensington ... both us doing chocolate samplings for her brand. We got chatting ...
Ama’s story is a fascinating one. Her background is computer science and engineering with a smidgeon of politics. A major catalyst with a life change was injuring her foot whilst running marathon, turning to boxing and focussing on health. We also pop in some wellbeing (always important) and how Ama copes with being a high achiever and coping with stress.
Her energy is infections, her pearls of wisdom fantastic.
If you are adore eating chocolate, ever dreamed of setting up your own bean-to-bar business or just curious to hear more about what it’s like then this is an episode especially for you.
My book recommendation: Chocolate Nations: Living and Dying for Cocoa in West Africa Orla Ryan
Chocolate: Duffy’s 55% Milk Gold Academy Chocolate Winner, Venezuela
