S3 E12 Tskenya Frazer, Founder TSKENYA Shoes
Hope and Patience
05/26/21 • 54 min
The only course I went on was the YouTube course, the YouTube school of life.
Tskenya Frazer's business is one which is helping breakdown the barriers for LGBTQ+ fashion. It’s a gender free multi award-winning vegan footwear brand specialising in larger sized feet and has been featured in Vogue, The Economist, BBC Women's Hour, The Guardian and Drapers to name but a few. You’ll discover our guest to be a remarkable woman aged only 27 and with her purpose oozing out of every pore. She is also midst writing a book about the landscape of Black British business.
In this episode we chat about how and why TSKENYA shoes was created, market research in Starbucks, the personal challenges Tskenya has faced, juggling a side hustle with many other roles including writing her book, working for MTC, a VC for Ada Capital and carer for her mum. I ask what it will take for her to make the leap to go full time with her much talked about and respected brand, where the shortfalls are for the younger generations to run their own businesses, how the Prince's Trust literally saved her life and loads more. By the end of the episode I could see Tskenya becoming a potent leader on the level with Michelle Obama and Arianna Huffington. She is one incredible woman as you will discover.
My book recommendation: Fortune Cookie Principle ~ Bernadette Jiwa
Tskenya's book recommendations: Your Silence Will Not Protect You ~ Audre Lorde & Hunger ~ Roxanne Gay

S3 E13 Stewart Roberts, Founder Haircuts4Homeless
Hope and Patience
06/02/21 • 54 min
My phone lit up with everyone saying, "Are you okay, are you okay," at five o'clock to then eight o'clock at night, "My God, I've just seen you on The X Factor adverts." I had to turn it off. I couldn't cope with it for about 24 hours.
Stewart Roberts has had quite a journey in his life. A journey which has led him to become a founder of a community-based charity where hairdressers donate their support to the homeless. They have 600 volunteers, near to 68 projects on the go and have delivered around 40k pockets of joy in the form of haircuts for homeless souls since they started back in 2014. Their sponsors include the National Lottery Community Fund, affiliates include the British Beauty Council and L’Oreal and this year the charity won the Marie Claire UK Hair Awards 2021 Special Jury Prize which is a special recognition for helping others. Their Global ambassador is none other than the Game of Thrones star Lena Headey.
We chat about what triggered Stewart to create his charity, losing his hairdressing business and the grief with it, the challenges of the pandemic on the charity and also the homeless, the serendipity of life as his business went into insolvency and what happened the same day to open a huge door, how he has attracted his sponsors, affiliates and ambassadors, why he contemplated 10 ways of killing himself at a dark stage in his life, why the Gideon bible is by his bedside and much more. P.S. The odd whistle and phone ringing is Stewarts parrot!
My book recommendation: The Practice: Shipping Creative Work ~ Seth Godin
Stewarts's book recommendations: Gideon Bible

S3 E15 Carla Biesinger, Founder Carla Biesinger
Hope and Patience
06/16/21 • 44 min
I think in the beginning, the first pain was, I don't know what the hell I'm doing, and then it was a lot of accumulating knowledge and just learning and trying out different things until I found my way. Then the next pain was, I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but I'm not really getting enough clients. That then turned into testing out different offers, creating funnels learning about just how to attract clients instead of just growing my audience.
Carla Biesinger has created a business which quite literally moves countries as, and when she does, which until the pandemic included Mexico, New York City, Barcelona, Berlin, and finally Lisbon. She's an early adopter of life as a digital nomad and in her words, a freedom-driven entrepreneur. From a love of food, our guests ended up becoming an Instagram expert and online course creator with her immensely popular course, Instagram Secrets to Success, and has choked up a following of over 45,000. An audience of over 100,000 subscribers and most recently added the role of business mentor to her brand.
We chat about the how's and why's she went from the world of restaurants to the world of instagram, the growing pains and challenges of converting followers into clients, why she has potentially now found her home for a while, where the pandemic affected her business, where her strengths were, her thoughts on social media and in particular instagram, how she copes with stress, where she has had to have hope and patience and much more.
My recommendation: Three Little Birds ~ Bob Marley
Carla's book recommendation: Super Attractor ~ Gabby Bernstein
Chocolate: Lindt Dark Chocolate Orange

- Over 1/3 of all food produced globally is wasted.

Our guest for this episode is Tessa Clarke, co-founder with Saasha Celestial-One of the global food-sharing app Olio. (Olio has just moved into non-food items and home-baked items too.)
These women are on a very focused mission to prevent food waste with sharing, create communities and sustainability.

S2. E6.
With Julian Metcalfe, Founder Itsu & Pret a Manager
Our guest on S2 E6 is a serious mover and shaker, a pioneer, a man with perseverance and guts. He has influenced how we eat in so many ways, and I bet you he will continue to do so. His latest creation is a robotic store of the future. Yes, seriously, robots making nigiri and maki.
‘Itsu started because a friend of mine said, "Please come to Japan with me for a week," an art dealer friend, and I remember Virgin were offering two tickets for the price of one. This was years 20, 30 years ago. I said, "Okay, fine, I'll go to Japan.’ The rest is history.
Join Julian and I to explore what makes him tick, his key to success and much more.
My book recommendation: Life Lessons from a Brain Surgeon Dr Rahun Jandial
Julian’s book recommendations: ‘Oh the Places You Will Go’ Dr Seuss
Chocolate: Julian is not a chocolate fan and opted for Itsu’s seaweed thins instead

S2 E4 Phyllis Cohen, Face Lace
Hope and Patience
10/14/20 • 40 min
Can you imagine being asked to do the make-up for David Bowie, to paint the backs of six women by Pink Floyd with their album covers and more recently create a bespoke Face Lace design for Lady Gaga which she wore at her Superbowl gig? That is just a tiny piece of the jigsaw of why Phyllis is doing what she is doing today.
So enough said ... join the chat with Phyllis and I in this episode. You will hear from an incredible woman who since Covid19 has had her 102-year-old father living with her family.
My book recommendation: Life Lessons from a Brain Surgeon Dr Rahun Jandial
Phyllis’s book recommendations: And The Train is Gone, James Baldwin
Chocolate: Lindt Milk Hazelnut

Ep. 7 - with Rebecca Hopkins, Balance Me
Hope and Patience
03/27/20 • 40 min
Rebecca co-founded the award-winning www.balanceme.com @balancemeskincare with her sister Claire 15 years ago. Propelled from making foot scrubs for corporate days into a pop up store in Top Shop they have gone on to supply John Lewis, Boots, Waitrose and many more stores. I met Rebecca in 2015 through the power of chat, rose chocolate and her fab rose products!
Both sisters had ‘previous lives’ before they found themselves starting Balanceme.Rebecca’s chapters include working for L’Oreal and training as a reflexologist.
Our chat includes the challenges they faced with the business during this time and how they have adapted it to keep growing, the changing and evolving landscape of women in business, ‘green washing’ in the natural beauty industry, Rebecca’s thoughts on the words success and failure ... and more.

Ep. 1 - with Rohan Blacker, Pooky Lighting
Hope and Patience
01/31/20 • 37 min
Rohan's backstory is one of many chapters ... so many it would make a rip-roaring read as a book! A matrimonial lawyer who went into pubs, catering, soup, online food delivery, then sofa and most recently his online lighting company www.pooky.com (@pookylights).
In this episode you will hear how Rohan emerged from life as a matrimonial lawyer to buddying up with this co-founder, the late Pat Reeves and creating two huge successes Deliverance (the first online delivery company to supply more than a pizza) and sofa.com. When you hear the tale about buying the name, sofa.com, I dare you not to laugh.
Rohan and I chat about the challenges he has experienced on his entrepreneurial path; the most recent losing his business partner of over 20 years, Pat. We continue exploring the entrepreneur’s mindset and what the words entrepreneur, success and failure mean to Rohan.
After our chocolate sojourn with Rohan’s favourite chocolate we get back on track and talk about his approach to wellbeing. A ‘dry’ January (despite a slight tip off the wagon a few days before we meet) is one of them.
I spin some of my thoughts on transitioning from one thing to another (in my case from the world of chocolate to the world of podcast)
My book recommendation: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse Charlie Mackesy.
Chocolate: Terry's Chocolate Orange
Quote from the recommended book above: What I'd like you to do is imagine a little boy and a mole sitting by his side on a rock, looking out onto a vast landscape... 'The boy says, "What is that over there?" It's the wild said the mole, don't fear it.'
