Hope. Act. Thrive.

“Comedy solves a lot of the problems that we have in communicating climate change,” says Dr. Matt Winning, an environmental economist, and stand-up comedian.

Matt is a Senior Research Fellow in the Institute for Sustainable Resources at University College London working on climate policy, including the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change.

Matt is also a stand-up comedian who performs live climate change comedy, at festivals and comedy clubs around the UK, regularly appears on BBC Radio 4, and has a TEDx talk about the importance of using humour to discuss climate change.

His debut book HOT MESS: What On Earth Can We Do About Climate Change is out now and available in hardback, ebook and audiobook.

In this conversation, we’ll talk about climate change comedy, the power of humour to tackle the climate crisis, and bringing children into a changing climate.

4 Things You Need To Know About The Ocean

“It’s important to foster ocean empathy in as many ways as we can,” says Josheena Naggea, an ocean advocate and doctoral candidate at Stanford University.

Her community-based research focuses on small-scale fisheries, protected area management, and the valorization of natural and cultural heritage in marine governance in the Western Indian Ocean. She has most recently worked on assessing the compounding social impacts of COVID-19 and the 2020 Wakashio oil spill disaster on coastal communities in Mauritius, her home country.

Josheena is interested in understanding people-nature connections and how that influences pro-ecological behaviour, which refers to the actions that people take to either reduce environmental harm or actively help restore the natural environment.

In this conversation, we’ll talk about the concept of the social ocean, ocean advocacy, and connectedness to nature.
