encore-episode-teen-drivingSpend plenty of time in the car with your new driver to support safety and wise judgment under different driving circumstances.Let’s face it, your child learning to drive can be very stressful for you as a parent. You want them to gain independence while still keeping them safe.

Fight colds and flu with Hydralyte. Rapid and complete hydration, suitable for all ages and doctor recommended. Use code “hydrakid” to save 30% - sponsor

The most important investment you can make in terms of the safety of your driving teen is giving them a structured experience behind the wheel. The biggest single risk factor for teens is their lack of driving experience. Introduce them to safe but stressful situations while you’re in the car, like interstate driving and country roads. Be clear about driving restrictions for the first few months your child has a license.

Before that learner’s permit is in your child’s hand, you can be a good role model as a driver and avoid distractions.

Consider implementing the Parent-Teen Driver Contract provided by the AAP.

Listen as Dr. Brian Johnston joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss safe driving for teens.

Underlying conditions and special needs can influence where your child should receive emergency care. It’s important to speak with your pediatrician to coordinate the best place to go if an emergency arises.

Not all hospitals are required to prepare to meet the unique emergency needs of children, and no provider wants to feel ill prepared to deal with a critical child. While there are programs working with hospitals to handle those gaps in critical care needs, there is no national standard on what emergency departments should have in place to treat children. You can speak with your local hospital’s leadership to see what you can do to help bridge the gap.

Listen as Dr. Kate Remick joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss how to prepare for an emergency and know where you should take your child.

Encore Episode: Kid-Friendly Holidays

encore-episode-kid-friendly-holidaysMake the most of your holidays while easing your stress and delighting your children.Kids get excited while parents are stressed over the winter holidays. How do you manage the holidays while still making sure they’re enjoyable despite the activity?

First, manage your child’s expectations. Instead of a list of every possible thing they want, ask them to narrow it down to what’s most important to them. Talk about that thing and what is realistic and appropriate but will still enjoyable for your kid.

Second, help your child think about others. Take a laundry basket through the house with your child and collect up toys and games that aren’t often used. Discuss how these toys can benefit others who aren’t as fortunate.

Additionally, encourage mindfulness. Embody the season with activities that create a great family time. Schedule it but don’t stress out about it. Decorating a gingerbread house, baking cookies or viewing holiday lights in the neighborhood can be very enjoyable. Be present and put devices aside as you share the activity.

Listen as Dr. Corinn Cross joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss how to make the holidays kid-friendly.
