In this episode, we dive into Chapter One of Yucky, Yummy, Savory, Sweet: Understanding the Flavors of Emotions. This chapter, titled Opus One, Two-Buck Chuck, and the Wine Snob, explores the predictive nature of our brains. Drawing on real-life stories, including a humorous anecdote about wine tasting and an insightful parable of a monk mistaking a rope for a snake, we examine how our brain’s expectations shape our reality.

Our brain is constantly predicting and responding to the world around us, often based on past experiences and memories. Whether it’s food, wine, or perceived threats, our mind is ahead of us, creating a version of reality before we fully engage with it. By understanding this, we can begin to question our initial reactions and become more conscious of how we interact with the world.

Tune in to explore the fascinating ways our brain shapes our perceptions and learn how to take a second look—or a second sip—at life’s experiences.
Listen to the full chapter on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm4d5wz_gQQ3tn8IGFd99g-o0pFNMM4Hs

Key Takeaways:

• The brain operates on a time delay, always predicting what’s coming based on past experiences.

• Expectations shape how we perceive the world—whether it’s wine tasting or facing fears.

• Our brains create predictions not just with objects, but with people, food, and emotions.

• By challenging these automatic predictions, we can broaden our perspectives and make better, more informed choices.

Memorable Quotes:

• “Our brain is always predicting what to do ahead of our experience, and that’s good—it helps us get up, act, and engage with the world.”

• “The first sip was Bob’s expectation, but the second was a more conscious experience.”

• “Once a snake is a rope, it can never be a snake again.”

Next Week’s Episode:

In next week’s episode, we’ll dive into Chapter 2, The Ingredients for How We Feel, Think, and Behave. We’ll talk about how our sensory experiences shape our emotional lives and explore the concept of syncing up our sensory inputs with our body for greater self-awareness and agency.

Flavors of Emotions - Fiona Love: The Kind of Love We All Need More Of | EP 22
play

05/16/25 • 19 min

Send us a text

In this deeply personal episode, Kim shares how she’s navigating grief after the loss of her beloved dog Fiona—by finding small joys, honoring her pain, and staying emotionally present through it all. With vulnerability and warmth, she opens up about what it means to process love and loss on your own terms, using her signature emotional recipe metaphor to help listeners reflect on how they manage their own emotional ingredients.

But at the heart of this episode is something even deeper: the power of unconditional love—the kind Fiona gave freely. Kim introduces the idea of “Fiona Love”: a simple, soulful reminder of the kind of love we receive from our pets and the kind of love we might want to cultivate more of in our own lives. This is love without conditions, love that comforts without needing to fix, love that simply shows up. Fiona gave it instinctively. And maybe, just maybe, we can learn to give it more intentionally—to others and to ourselves.

Whether it’s rubbing a belly, painting your nails with little flowers, or just allowing yourself to feel both joy and sorrow without judgment—Fiona Love lives in the little things. And the more we practice it, the more natural it becomes.

This episode is a gentle reminder:

✨ Grief is a balancing act.

✨ It’s okay to feel joy and sorrow in the same breath.

✨ It’s okay to grieve your way—not the way others think you should.

✨ It’s okay to be both a little broken and still beautifully whole.

✨ And it’s more than okay to lead with love—the Fiona kind.

Whether you’re grieving, growing, or somewhere in between, this episode is a moment of connection for your emotional palate.

Ever say, “I’m just in a mood”... and leave it there?

Yeah. Same.

But here’s the thing—emotions are like flavors. And saying you’re “off” is kind of like telling a chef their dish tastes weird. Not super helpful, right?

In this episode of Flavors of Emotions, we’re exploring something that can change the way you feel—literally. It’s called emotional granularity (fancy term, powerful impact). It’s all about learning to name your emotions with more precision. Not just “good” or “bad”... but irritated, disappointed, relieved, or hopeful.

Because when you can name what you feel, you can actually work with it instead of wrestling it.

✨ In this episode, I cover:

  • What emotional granularity actually is (and where it came from)
  • Why having more emotional vocabulary helps regulate stress, improve decisions, and deepen relationships
  • How developing granularity boosts resilience—and might even reduce doctor visits (yep, science backs it up)
  • A sneak peek into the emotional granularity exercise from my upcoming Sensory Sync workshop

If emotions ever feel vague, overwhelming, or hard to explain—this episode will help you shift that. Grab your emotional tasting spoon and let’s dig in.

Welcome back to the Flavors of Emotions podcast! In today’s episode, we dive into Chapter Two of Yucky Yummy Savory Sweet: Understanding the Flavors of Emotions. I discuss the ingredients that shape how we think, feel, and behave—yes, ingredients! Our brains take in perceptive input, much like a chef uses ingredients in a recipe. Sometimes, though, the brain can get things wrong—misinterpreting what we see, hear, or feel.
Key Takeaways from the Episode:
* Perception Isn't Always Perfect: Ever thought you saw something or someone, but after a second glance, realized it wasn’t what you thought? This happens because the brain can make prediction errors, which I discuss in my book’s second chapter, Ingredients for How We Feel, Think, and Behave.
* The Role of Focus in Emotions: Whether it’s fear or love, your focus can limit the input you get from the world around you. When you’re afraid, your brain is on high alert, and you focus solely on the perceived threat—blocking out everything else. Love does something similar, making you overlook flaws in favor of keeping that emotional high.
* Internal Dialogue and Listening: Our internal voice can interrupt our ability to truly listen to others because we’re too busy predicting what they’re going to say! I shared a personal example of how this can affect communication in relationships.
* Human Agency: One of the main reasons I wrote this book is to help you develop more agency—your ability to take control of your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. By better managing your perceptions, you can improve how you interact with the world.
Next Episode Preview:
In the next episode, we’ll explore interoception—a sensory system that helps you sync up the signals from the world to your body. It’s critical to both emotional and physical well-being, so stay tuned!

In this episode, we explore how emotions can be understood and expressed through the concept of a “palate” and how we are the architects of our emotional world. Just as food flavors—salty, sweet, spicy, or bland—can shape our culinary experience, our emotions can be visualized and better understood by using the language of taste. Here’s what we dive into:

Transforming Taste into Emotion: We discuss how anger might feel “salty” or “spicy,” while enjoyment may be “sweet,” and calmness “mellow.” By turning the physical palate into an emotional one, we gain a relational tool to connect with our feelings.

Building Our Inner World: Drawing on Erwin Schrödinger’s insights and Lisa Feldman Barrett’s theory of constructed emotions, we examine how each of us creates a unique “model” of the world inside our minds, shaped by sensory inputs, memories, and life experiences. This model forms the blueprint for how we interpret and respond to the world around us.

Avoiding Emotional Ruts: We explore the importance of breaking free from the extremes of “loving everything” or “hating everything.” Instead, refining our emotional palate helps us pinpoint more nuanced feelings, allowing us to avoid emotional ruts and build resilience.

Empathy and Its Boundaries: Empathy can be powerful, but in excess, it may lead to “empathy-induced altruism.” We explore how to balance empathy with compassion and select the emotional “flavor” that best fits the situation.

Architecture of the Self: Using the metaphor of architecture, we discuss how we are all beautiful works in progress, constantly constructing and reconstructing ourselves. Embracing our “inner architect” allows us to better design how we experience our world.

Throughout the episode, we touch on the importance of seeing emotions as recipes we create using our unique ingredients. Tune in to learn how to savor your emotional journey, build self-awareness, and embrace your ever-evolving inner masterpiece.

In this first episode of Flavors of Emotions, Kim Korte introduces a unique perspective on understanding and managing emotions by comparing them to cooking and flavors. Drawing inspiration from 'How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain' by Lisa Feldman Barrett, Korte explores the idea that emotions are constructed by the brain through our past experiences. She uses the analogy of ingredients (our sensory perceptions), recipes (our past experiences and beliefs), and tasting (interoceptive signals) to illustrate how we can become more aware of our emotions. Korte explains how distinguishing between different 'flavors' of emotions can lead to better decision-making, self-awareness, and overall health. The podcast aims to empower listeners to actively participate in 'cooking' their emotional experiences, making life more flavorful and manageable.
