Financial Mission - Don't Edit Yourself

Don't Edit Yourself

05/29/23 • 9 min

Financial Mission

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. I only changed my ways of spending and money management because I was so stressed out and anxious about the way we were spending our money. I formed to the masses, tried keeping up with the Joneses and I decided I didn't want to do that any longer.
Being genuine and authentic is beginning to seem like a lost art. There are so many people who are copying others, being fake, and editing their real selves to be like others. What makes you different are your unique qualities. We need to seek to find our true selves.

Don’t edit yourself to fit in. Don’t form into the shape that others want you to be. Be a star when everyone else is a circle. Dig deep to find who you really are. Go back to the basics.
We all need to focus on self-care, recovering from trauma, and gaining clarity on blurry areas in our lives. You can walk through life with your head in the sand and not seek to understand. You can drive through life, going Mach 80, and not take the time to see the scenery. But is that what you truly want? Do you want to miss out on your dream life? Do you want to pass by those beautiful lookout spots on the side of the road?

We all have things in our lives that we want to forget and not deal with. But that is not helping us. We need to take the bull by the horns and deal with our discomfort and overwhelm. Don’t let life pull you back, keep moving forward, but do that while dealing with the past and mistakes. Don’t try to cope by using poor coping mechanisms to numb the pain. Pain can be a good thing when you are facing things head-on. Don’t use alcohol, sleep, food, or distraction as a way to cope.

How To Budget On A Low Income

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years! Say, what?!?!?
Everyone, on every income level low or high, NEEDS to have a budget. I know, a budget can be a scary word. But a budget is needed no matter how much money you make.

If you have a low income, you definitely need to have a budget, to simply tell your money where to go.

There were many times before I started to do a monthly budget, that I didn’t know where my hard-earned money went. I would get my paycheck and I swear, a week later, my money was gone. My money was like my socks that disappear from my dryer. I swear, those things sprout legs and just up and walk away. You DO NOT want your money to find legs and run away.

So, how do you budget on a low income?

Budgeting is a simple task, however, it is not always easy, especially in the beginning.

Here are a few steps to starting to budget:

1. Write down ALL of your income (Job, side hustles )

2. Write down ALL of your expenses (bills, food, debt payments)

3. Look over the last 3 months of your spending

4. Prioritize your spending (start with your 4 walls: Shelter, Food, Transportation, and Utilities)

5. Make sure you have a small Emergency Fund (savings account for emergencies)

6. Cut costs- Find places that you can cut out of your spending (lots of times this is going out to eat, pre-packaged foods, snacks, etc)

7. Use Cash- you are likely to spend LESS money when you pay with cash
