Financial Mission - How To Budget On A Low Income
play

05/22/23 • 23 min

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years! Say, what?!?!?
Everyone, on every income level low or high, NEEDS to have a budget. I know, a budget can be a scary word. But a budget is needed no matter how much money you make.

If you have a low income, you definitely need to have a budget, to simply tell your money where to go.

There were many times before I started to do a monthly budget, that I didn’t know where my hard-earned money went. I would get my paycheck and I swear, a week later, my money was gone. My money was like my socks that disappear from my dryer. I swear, those things sprout legs and just up and walk away. You DO NOT want your money to find legs and run away.

So, how do you budget on a low income?

Budgeting is a simple task, however, it is not always easy, especially in the beginning.

Here are a few steps to starting to budget:

1. Write down ALL of your income (Job, side hustles )

2. Write down ALL of your expenses (bills, food, debt payments)

3. Look over the last 3 months of your spending

4. Prioritize your spending (start with your 4 walls: Shelter, Food, Transportation, and Utilities)

5. Make sure you have a small Emergency Fund (savings account for emergencies)

6. Cut costs- Find places that you can cut out of your spending (lots of times this is going out to eat, pre-packaged foods, snacks, etc)

7. Use Cash- you are likely to spend LESS money when you pay with cash

Financial Mission - What is a Financial Coach and Why You Need One
play

05/15/23 • 13 min

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. Say, what?!?!
Do you feel stuck with your money? Do you feel like you can’t get ahead on your bills or that you are using credit cards to afford your lifestyle? Have you tried to budget and feel that you failed at it? Do you bring in an income? Do spend money? Do you work? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you would benefit greatly from hiring a financial coach.
A Financial Coach can help you manage your money. By hiring a Financial Coach, they will help you create a custom and individualized plan and make goals with your money. You can figure out and google pretty much anything related to money. However, finances are 80% emotions and only 20% head knowledge. This means that even if you KNOW what to do with your money, you might have a hard time with the follow through. There is also no single right way to manage your money. You need a tailored plan for you and your money
Hiring a Financial Coach will save you money
. They will help you make and achieve certain SMART goals. Do you like to have an accountability partner? I sure do! A Financial Coach will be just that, your accountability partner with your money. They will keep you on track and guide you along the way. A Financial Coach will work with you to form new healthy habits that you are happy with.

Hiring a financial coach will:

1. Save you money

2. Be your accountability partner

3. Help you achieve SMART goals

4. Keep you on track with your money goals and personal goals

5. Form healthy and happy habits

6. Set you up for long-term success

7. Teach you how to prioritize your expenses

A good Financial Coach will set you up for long-term success. Short-term success is fun because you see it right away. You get that hit of dopamine as soon as you see the success. Hopefully, with a good Financial Coach, you will see success right away. But you really want to be set up for long-term success. As new habits form, these will allow you to be in it for the long run

Financial Mission - Don't Edit Yourself

Don't Edit Yourself

play

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. I only changed my ways of spending and money management because I was so stressed out and anxious about the way we were spending our money. I formed to the masses, tried keeping up with the Joneses and I decided I didn't want to do that any longer.
Being genuine and authentic is beginning to seem like a lost art. There are so many people who are copying others, being fake, and editing their real selves to be like others. What makes you different are your unique qualities. We need to seek to find our true selves.

Don’t edit yourself to fit in. Don’t form into the shape that others want you to be. Be a star when everyone else is a circle. Dig deep to find who you really are. Go back to the basics.
We all need to focus on self-care, recovering from trauma, and gaining clarity on blurry areas in our lives. You can walk through life with your head in the sand and not seek to understand. You can drive through life, going Mach 80, and not take the time to see the scenery. But is that what you truly want? Do you want to miss out on your dream life? Do you want to pass by those beautiful lookout spots on the side of the road?

We all have things in our lives that we want to forget and not deal with. But that is not helping us. We need to take the bull by the horns and deal with our discomfort and overwhelm. Don’t let life pull you back, keep moving forward, but do that while dealing with the past and mistakes. Don’t try to cope by using poor coping mechanisms to numb the pain. Pain can be a good thing when you are facing things head-on. Don’t use alcohol, sleep, food, or distraction as a way to cope.

Financial Mission - #73 Women Need + Are Craving More Connection
play

07/08/24 • 9 min

Women NEED and are CRAVING true connection!
The more I work with and talk to women, the more I am realizing that we all just want connection. True, in-person, connection with others. We want to feel like we belong, that we are seen + heard. We all want to “fit in” while being ourselves, without having to change for others.

"I believe one of the challenges, especially for women, is the expectation placed on 18-year-olds to choose a major in college and decide on a career path that they’ll follow for the rest of their lives. We send them off to school or into the workforce without the necessary tools, resources, and support. Many women end up partying through school, developing poor habits. They get a job, get married, have children, and then experience a significant breakdown in their early 30s. Sound familiar?"

Has this happened to you? To a friend? Cousin? Sister? It happened to me.

To provide better support, we should start addressing the needs of women, girls, boys, and men before they become overwhelmed, stressed, and lonely.

We are hungry for connection, true, deep, honest, and in-person connection. The entire world pivoted to the virtual space in 2020, which is amazing and definitely has a place. However, as a whole society, we are missing out on many things by not being in close proximity to others. We need a village, close by, where we can learn and grow with. So many of us are missing this and it’s a shame.

Financial Mission - #90 Breaking Free From Overconsumption
play

11/18/24 • 21 min

Overconsumption has us all feeling on edge, irritable, and stressed. We are overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in our houses and lives, but we don’t know how to stop buying and consuming.
We are RICH in the United States, and we blow our money needlessly. I know that there are people who are truly struggling financially here too, but the vast majority of us have warm homes, our kids have mattresses to sleep on, we have more than enough clothes and shoes, we have cell phones (even if they aren’t the latest model), we have more than enough but society is teaching us and influencing us to want more, more and more. When does it stop? How does it stop?
Many of us are living paycheck to paycheck, not because we truly need to but because we are choosing to. Yes, the cost of everything is going up, but no one wants to make the sacrifices to cut back or to sell their precious items, clothes, boats, cars... you name it. Many of us, myself included are a bit spoiled. We have nice vehicles, a boat, and 2 dogs, and each of my boys have their own bedrooms. But I could complain daily about how expensive groceries, fuel, and everything are in today’s economy.
I am trying to choose to be content with what I have. Do I want a lake house–YES! I do. Very much so...will it make me happy? Maybe for a while, but do I need it to be happy? NO!
Society pressures us to buy more and it is crucial to take a real, raw, and deep look at your consumption habits. How can you change your habits and mindset to minimize your consumption?
For me, I am choosing to donate more, choosing to spend time with others, and not always spend money on things. I am giving more of my money to those in need. I am helping empower others to get their finances in a stronger place and to realize how lucky and grateful we are.

Financial Mission - Sometimes Simpler is Better in Life and Finances
play

03/23/23 • 13 min

I tend to get overwhelmed by clutter. When my house is a mess (which is often, as I have 3 kids and a husband!) I feel more on edge. When my house is clean and organized, I tend to feel more at ease. The same goes for my finances. When my money was a hot mess, so was I!!
Now I wouldn't say my house is anywhere near minimalistic, I wish it was! But between my 3 boys, husband, and even myself, we like to keep things and we like "things"! But I am decluttering and will continue to work towards becoming slightly minimalistic...is that a thing?
When I got on a budget and a plan my mind eased as well, my stress decreased tremendously!
I am a fairly firm believer in spending a little more on quality items, especially my socks! I love my steel wool socks that are about $20-$24 each! However, I still buy second-hand and buy off the sales racks.
When my counters and house is organized, my mind is calmer.
Will you do me a favor, please? Try decluttering and purging and let me know how you feel!

Financial Mission - My Journey of paying off $100,000 in 2 years
play

03/22/23 • 8 min

My husband and I were $100,000 in debt, we were drowning. We had a beautiful camper on a permanent camping site and we each had a vehicle loan. Luckily, we had already paid off my small-ish school loans and we did not have any credit card debt. We also had our house payment, but that is separate from the $100,000. We were drowning in debt, and we didn’t even realize it.
In the spring of 2020, my husband, who is a self-employed farmer had to have emergency back surgery, I was furloughed (basically laid off) from my nursing job and I had to plant our farm crops we were not able to afford to hire someone else to plant our crops.

That was a scary and crazy time in our lives. That was also the start of my journey (addiction) to finances!
I didn’t know how to drive a tractor, let alone plant corn and soybeans. Our kids were also home because there was no school due to the global pandemic. No wait, we were trying to provide them with virtual schooling, while recovering from back surgery, and having a mom sub in as a farmer! I honestly don’t know how we did it. So, there I was driving the tractor for 8-10 hours a day and I usually had 1-2, sometimes all 3 boys riding with me. I have photos of my youngest son taking a nap in the tractor with me and our middle son reading his books for school in the tractor.

Well, long story short, I got the crops planted. They weren’t planted well, but they still grew, and we had a decent harvest that Fall.

Looking back, I learned so much during that spring. I started listening to money podcasts and realized I had a love for finances and other people’s financial journeys. I found out that I can do anything I put my mind to, even if I don’t want to do it. See, I didn’t want to plant our crops that spring, but I didn’t have a choice. We couldn’t afford to hire someone to plant all our crops, so it was up to me to do it.
Now, I know not everyone has a large item they can sell to help them get out of debt. However, really take a deep look into your finances and what you “have”. You would be amazed at how much extra stuff you could sell. Maybe you decide to downsize from a brand new or almost new vehicle to something a little older but more affordable. Maybe you decide to eat out at restaurants less often to help you pay off your debt sooner. The goal is to improve yourself through this journey and to change the way you’ve always done things. Working as a team if you are married and with your family if you have kids. Encourage each other and empower one another. I know you can do this!
