Fading Memories: Alzheimer's/Dementia Caregiver Support
Prescription Advocate: Fewer Meds for Better Health . We want a fix when we get sick or don't feel well. Prescribing more and more medications because we want an immediate fix can cause more problems than they solve. This situation is especially true for the older population. The prevalence of multiple prescription medications is often driven by complex health conditions. While prescriptions play a crucial role in managing illnesses, a critical examination of the necessity and potential interactions is essential. Over-reliance on medications can lead to adverse effects and increased healthcare costs. A holistic approach, incorporating lifestyle changes and exploring non-pharmaceutical interventions, is vital to reduce the burden of prescription medications, promoting a more balanced and sustainable approach to health. About Our Guest One morning I was scrolling through Instagram when a video caught my attention. A pharmacist was talking to an audience of general physicians about how they can continue to make money while de-prescribing meds. I liked it and got an immediate DM. I assumed it was a bot, but a real person was behind my screen, and he was the guest for this episode. Dr. DeLeon Canterburry is a board-certified pharmacist who understands their importance to our overall well-being. This episode discusses the pitfalls of over-reliance on medication and when and how to stop taking most of them. I'm confident that Dr. DeLeon's knowledge will help you advocate for a medication review and, hopefully, result in your loved one taking fewer meds. Hydration & Older Adults - An Easy Way to Get It

Hydration & Older Adults/ Hydration is paramount for the well-being of older adults. As aging diminishes the body's ability to retain water, dehydration becomes a significant risk. Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining cognitive function, joint flexibility, and organ health. Dehydration in seniors can exacerbate existing health conditions and lead to complications. Encouraging regular water intake is a simple yet vital strategy to support overall health, enhance energy levels, and mitigate potential health risks associated with inadequate hydration. I learned about JellyDrops early on in my podcasting days, but sadly they weren't available outside the United Kingdom at the time. Earlier this year (2022), I started seeing social media posts from followers in America about this innovative snack. Shortly after, I got an email suggesting Lewis Hornby as a guest. What a happy day. About Jelly-Drops If you are not familiar with JellyDrops, here's a quick overview. You'll want to tune in and hear the entire story of how Lewis was inspired to create them and where they're planning on going with similar products in the future. Check out our YouTube video with testimonial videos from pod friends! Jelly Drops are award-winning candy designed to boost hydration. They're 95% water, sugar-free and vegan with added electrolytes. Inventor Lewis Hornby was inspired to create water candy after his grandma Pat, who had dementia, struggled to hydrate. With a fantastic solid but smooth, texture - these candies do not have a liquid center - encouraging independent hydration for all through a delicious snack. Once we've whetted your appetite for these tasty, hydrating snacks, check out their website so you can get your own! https://www.jellydrops.us ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Related Episodes: How Food Affects Our Brain Health Brain Health & Dementia Prevention in Ten Easy Steps ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sign Up for more Advice & Wisdom - email newsletter. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Please Support Our Sponsors So We Can Continue To Bring The Show to You For Free ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Make Your Brain Span Match Your LifeSpan Relevate from NeuroReserve With Relevate nutritional supplement, you get science-backed nutrition to help protect your brain power today and for years to come. Parent the Aging Generation: Exercise in Balance

Parent the Aging Generation: Exercise in Balance. Being able to balance career, child-rearing, and caregiving for aging parents poses a formidable challenge. Juggling work deadlines, school activities, and healthcare responsibilities demands strategic time management and a robust support network. The delicate balance requires flexibility, patience, and the ability to prioritize tasks. Successfully navigating this complex role involves setting boundaries, seeking external assistance, and acknowledging personal well-being. Despite the hurdles, the experience can foster resilience, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the interconnected roles within the family dynamic. Over the past five years, Mike and Kim Barnes found themselves navigating problems they never saw coming from their parents: Alzheimer's, pacemakers, COVID pneumonia, and the tough decision to move parents into retirement communities. They've learned to balance the many facets of parenting aging parents, including medical, financial, and everyday-life decisions, emotional rollercoasters, protecting their parents from scams, and more, all while parenting their college-age kids and building their careers. When you're helping your aging parents, there can be so much confusion, so many unknowns, so much jargon – it's hard even to know what to "google" for answers! They get it! Mike's mom has Alzheimer's, his dad is in his 80s, and Kim's mom is also in her 80s. It's a journey we know others are going through, too. That's why we want to provide access to experts, share resources, and build a community so that we know the right questions to ask, what services and assistance are available and how to find them. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Related episodes: Life Lessons from the Sandwich Generation.
