Defense mechanisms are protections we build to avoid painful feelings such as shame, regret, rejection, inadequacy, insecurity, overwhelm and more. They can emerge beginning in early childhood out of self-preservation and even survival. In this two part episode I dig into the 10 most common defense mechanisms, common reasons or events that can invoke them and some beginning steps to begin to recognize, confront and dismantle them as much as possible. While defense mechanisms can be helpful and even necessary in certain situations, as we create a life that is fulfilling and joyous and we feel safer to start showing up more authentically, they become less useful at best and harmful at worst.

#7: Connecting to Courage
Courage is the key to facing down so many things that hold us back. It's the key to deepening our own self-awareness, to overcoming fear, to figuring out who we are, how we want to show up in the world, and making the changes to become the person we are meant to be. In this episode I talk about what courage is, 3 different kids of courage, what researchers are learning about courage and how to begin to build courage in small ways that will lead to bigger ways and bigger results in your life.

A continuation of last week's episode, diving into 5 more defense mechanisms, their common roots and triggers. Once we understand our own common defense mechanisms and why and how we invoke them, we can start to do the work to heal the underlying causes so we can then release the feelings such as: hame, regret, rejection, inadequacy, insecurity, overwhelm and more, we are trying so desperately to protect ourseles against. Then dismantle the defense mechanisms as they will no longer be necessary.
