#8: The Walls We Build - Dismantling Defense Mechanisms Part I
Erin Royer Presents Minding The Gap11/02/22 • 27 min
Defense mechanisms are protections we build to avoid painful feelings such as shame, regret, rejection, inadequacy, insecurity, overwhelm and more. They can emerge beginning in early childhood out of self-preservation and even survival. In this two part episode I dig into the 10 most common defense mechanisms, common reasons or events that can invoke them and some beginning steps to begin to recognize, confront and dismantle them as much as possible. While defense mechanisms can be helpful and even necessary in certain situations, as we create a life that is fulfilling and joyous and we feel safer to start showing up more authentically, they become less useful at best and harmful at worst.
