When you consider what stands in your way, do you see it as an obstacle or an opportunity?

This weekend while I was at a conference, someone quoted Marcus Aurelius, "What stands in the way becomes the way."

In reading the sentence prior to the quote, you would know it referred to the negative, an obstacle.

However, most of us are not quoting Marcus by his entire quote. We simply whisper the quote, "What stands in the way becomes the way."

So you don't just have to let any obstacle stand in the way. An opportunity can stand in the way too.

Maybe you had a time where someone requested your expertise. You immediately responded with a confident "yes" to grab hold of that opportunity which was positive.

What stands in the way becomes the way.

Life has many seasons; some good, some bad. Understand your perspective. Stand on I A.M.!

The K.I.S.S. ~ Stand on "I A.M."!

Only you control your mind. So you must be intentional about how you filter what you see, hear, taste. touch, and feel.

Stand on I A.M.!

  1. Identify what it is that you want to change.
  2. Acknowledge if the effects are positive or negative. If it's an obstacle, you will need to make some specific tweaks. If it's an opportunity, you need to be willing to jump and take a chance on the opportunity. Seize the opportunity.
  3. Make a way. Take A.I.M. Action ignites motivation.

You are strong in both obstacles and opportunities.

What if food could be more for you than simply fuel for your body? Melissa d'Arabian shares her journey with food and how it's an invitation from God; tasting grace!

Melissa d'Arabian: A wife of 16 years and mother to their four beautiful girls, which includes one set of twins.

She is a speaker, writer, television host, and celebrity chef. After winning season five of "The Next Food Network Star" in August 2009, Melissa premiered her inaugural cooking show, "Ten Dollar Dinners".

She went on to be a New York Times Best-Selling Author with her first cookbook "Ten Dollar Dinners: 140 Recipes and Tips to Elevate Simple, Fresh Meals Any Night of the Week", which debuted in August 2012.

Routines foster habits that allow dreams and goals to be accomplished. By developing these good habits, you are creating a healthy lifestyle. Level up your day!

When we are referring to routines, many jump to the daily routines; what you do in the morning within the first one to two hours.

However, there is one routine which is forgotten or not spoken about much.

If you want to create a greater impact in your healthy lifestyle, look at your nighttime routine.

Everything you do for your health has consequences; good or bad. You want to be intentional about how you live your life.

Little tweaks can produce big results.

You need to have a nightly routine. Think back to the days of young children. When you had those babies, it was much easier to keep a bedtime routine.

It was great for you and soothing for the child.

If you want a smooth jumpstart to your day, it all starts at night!

Not much has changed when it comes to getting down to bed. You're just a little older and headstrong.

So how do you level up your day to get down tonight?

Understand that the nighttime routine is to ready your mind, body, and spirit. You do what works for you.

  1. Prep your body. This is your self-care habits (i.e., brushing teeth, washing face, hot bath, foot soak, shower, etc.).
  2. Calm your mind. Do a brain dump. Have a notebook beside your bed and write away.
  3. Expand your heart. Be grateful for the gift of the day. Write in a journal.

If you are wondering what you do, first just be alert to what you do. Be watchful.

Then, commit to three days of paying close attention to your nighttime routine.

Your day begins at night! So treat it right.

When you want to move forward in chasing your dream, what is keeping you stuck? Part of living the life you love, both personally and professionally, requires confidence.

The confidence that keeps you going when you don't feel like. The confidence that stimulates creativity and productivity. The confidence that radiates brighter than a lighthouse on the darkness night.

When you want to do something specifically that tends to require your knowledge, you want to have that confidence; that certainty, the belief in your ability.

However, if you question or second guess yourself, the confidence waivers.

And when that happens, you get stuck!!

What is keeping you stuck?

A lack of confidence.

So how do you begin to find and to build confidence?

Confidence is not something that you create; it is experienced and given. Through your life's journey, you gather experiences and circumstances that impact how you see yourself. And that begins to shape your confidence.

We can't look to our accomplishments, our trophies, our titles, our careers, our children, or even our spouses.

It's in all these things and people we don't have control over. Because when we take all that away, what do we have that's left? Nothing, but a flawed system that fails us.

Confidence doesn't come from the scraps of this world. Confidence can't be made up by the reactions of the world. Nor can it be found in the stuff that you do.

Confidence is to know; it's the certainty of!

In order for you to live out God's purpose for your life, it's to know where your confidence comes from.

The K.I.S.S. ~ To K.N.O.W.!

Your confidence comes from God. Your focus has to shift from the world to your Lord.

When you are searching for lies that gives you truth, it robs your very well-being of who you are.

Truth is found in your Creator. So to know is to be certain. That's confidence!

1. Know whose you are. You are a child of God.

“I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8

2. Nimble in mind. Quick and alert. Discerning and wise.

"Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD. The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction" ~ Proverbs 16:20-21 "Walk with the wise and become wise." ~ Proverbs 13:20

3. Own what you can control. Don't overthink your capabilities. If God gave you the desire, He will prepare you and the way. Plus, don't worry about someone else's trash or truth.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." ~ Philippians 4:13

4. Wonderment of a child. This is your child-like faith.

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3

So if you are chasing your dream, finishing your schooling, writing a book, being the BEST mom possible, leading your church; whatever it is...your confidence is to know the truth that withstands all the lies of this world.

Don't wait for perfection; God will provide the imperfection to build your dream.

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!

When your alarm goes off in the morning, how do you feel? "I hate my alarm clock!" That seems to be the most common response. Got sleep?

Feeling tired seems to be more of the norm with people sleeping 20% less than what we did 100 years ago.

Sleep deprivation seems to be a norm in today's busyness. Not enough time to take care of yourself let alone getting enough sleep. Let's just stay up and feel worse.

Three out of five people have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

Common sense would be to prioritize sleep, but it's not common practice.

So let's change that. With the school season rapidly approaching and Fall around the corner, sleep needs to be taken seriously.

Sleep is essential to our health.

  • Brain function,
  • Immune health,
  • Hormonal balance,
  • Physical health,
  • And so much more!

When you don't get enough sleep, you can't handle the daily demands of your waking life. Your well-being is sacrificed.

At some point, sleeping must become a priority in order to live, love, and impact. This means, working on your sleep-wake cycle, better known as your circadian rhythm, must be intentional.

It's time to reclaim your sleep and practice good sleep hygiene.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Practice good sleep hygiene!

Be intentional with your sleep hygiene. This is a variety of practices and patterns for sleeping well and waking well.

  1. Maintain a consistent sleep pattern. Go to bed the same time every night, even on the weekend.
  2. Avoid stimulants close to bedtime. This is caffeine and nicotine. Alcohol can even be a problem.
  3. Be cautious of the food you eat prior to bedtime. Some foods like fried foods, citrus fruits, rich foods, and fatty foods can trigger indigestion for some people.
  4. Create a sleeping environment that is cooling and relaxing. A dark room with the temperature in the low to mid 60 degrees.
  5. Be intentional with limiting your exposure to blue light. This is what signals your body to wake up. This causes great confusion. So put away your technology, and go back to old fashion reading and writing or even listening to the radio.
  6. When you wake in the morning, be sure to expose yourself to bright light, preferably the sun --- natural light.
  7. Exercise as it keeps your body fit and ready for sleep. Be careful if you exercise prior to sleeping, as it can affect each person differently.
  8. BONUS --- If you can, take a power nap, but no more than 20-30 minutes.

All of this is just the beginning. Sleeping doesn't have to be overwhelming, but it does need to be a priority.

Your body works hard for you all day long. So treat your body well, and get great sleep giving it the opportunity to restore, repair, and renew itself for what tomorrow brings.

Life has infinite possibilities, yet you choose to live with limitations. Why make a way for only what you see?

It's amazing how having sight can be so blinding all at the same time.

Much is taken for granted. Much is approved for and expected only by what is right in front of you.

Why make a way for only what you see?

I think how my life would be so boring and dull if all my decisions were based on my vision, my sight alone.

I've been blessed to have fairly good eyesight most of my life. However, even with 20/20 vision, there are limitations.

There are some details even my eyes miss. Even having those eagle eyes, I still can't see everything.

How much of your life are you relying on your sight, only seeing as far as your eyes can see?

What would happen if you changed your lenses and walked by faith?

He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." ~ Matthew 17:20

Yet you've been there and done that. You don't need help. You don't need direction. You don't need faith.

So why does your heart long for more?

God is faithful. He will strengthen you and protect you from evil.

You might get caught in a corner, but God will be the first to defend you. To make a way for you.

"But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one." 2 Thessalonians 3:3

Are you so blind though that you would shut out possibilities for the lack of how far you can see?

"For we walk by faith, not by sight." ~ 2 Corinthians 5:7 The K.I.S.S. ~ Walk by faith!

When you walk by faith, nothing is impossible.

"For nothing will be impossible with God." ~ Luke 1:37

When you giving God permission, it opens doors of possibilities. It makes way for that which you cannot see.

It removes the dust and particles from your eyes, illuminating that which was hidden from your heart because you didn't have the depth perception to see that far.

Walk by faith.

REFLECTION: Where in your life have you been limiting God?

Now that's a hard question, and you probably don't have an answer. But I want you to think about how you are looking at your life. How you are seeing possibilities.

Maybe it's time to get your eyes checked.

Why make a way for only what you see?

When is enough enough? Sometimes we can overdramatize situations or circumstances; overcompensating for our own desires. Put the brakes on.

Why keep stressing out your children when all they are trying to do is become self-sufficient?

We have a tendency to over direct our children. We want what's best for them, but whose best is it for?

My daughter, son, and I were running errands. My car is in the shop and so we needed her car for transportation.

Long story short, as she was driving, we pulled in the parking lot. She asked me where she should park. I responded, "Anywhere will be fine."

Taking a shortcut through the parking lot, she said she would park here and what did I do?

"Park right here. That'll be great."

"See mom. That's why I asked you. Because you were going to tell me anyway."

We don't realize that as our children grow and mature, they need to spread their wings to fly. They need to find their own way, no matter if we agree or not.

That means making tough decisions.

  • Trying out for a sport in school
  • Continue dancing
  • Parking the car in a parking lot at the box store
  • Quitting their job for a riskier with no guaranteed paycheck amount

We mean well! We don't want to over-exercise our knowledge always. BUT we do.

It's frustrating because you want what's best for them. You desire success for your child. But as challenging as it is, we need to let them fall and put the brakes on.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Put the brakes on!

Life isn't always about doing what seems to be the right way. There are so many different ways to get to the same place. You may have experienced it one way, but that doesn't mean there's not another way that works just as good.

So put the brakes on and gas up on the right stuff!

  1. Empower them to be their best self. They need to be able to succeed and fail without your hands. Instead give them your heart!
  2. Lead with the door open. Provide a safe place for them to share with you. Don't come across judgmental or condemning.
  3. Encourage grit and grace. It's going to be hard work to live out their dreams. Build that stamina, the fortitude, to get through the challenges and pain in life. But still forgiving when you don't get it right the first time.

Tough life lessons we all can utilize and we all need to learn.

When you put the brakes on, you are giving your child (and yourself) space to spread their wings and fly!

It's on their terms, not our dreams.

Our responsibility is about raising our children up to place their own mark on the world to impact in the way they were created.

Now that should put a smile on your heart!

So when you are driving in that parking lot, put the brakes on (at least for your mouth), and give them their wings to soar!

Your marriage, your relationship to your spouse is critical to your family's success.

Unfortunately, efforts are stale nowadays when it comes to building up marriages. We do things out of convenience.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." ~ Matthew 5:14-16

And that light of the world starts in your household.

The power of one small act comes from the question...

The K.I.S.S. ~ How can I serve you?

The power of one small act takes initiative. The power of one small act takes intentionality. The power of one small act takes investment.

  1. Initiative - You have to look for the jumping-off points; the starting point. Don't wait to be asked. Just do or make suggestions.
  2. Intentionality - Be alert. Be aware of what you can do to serve. Seek out. Don't wait for the obvious; it may be too late. Look for ways to serve.
  3. Investment - Time. Money. It can be giving up of what you want or desire.

How can I serve you? What can I do for you today?

The power of one small act will change your marriage. The power of one small act will change your heart.

Health and wellness do not always have to be fitness and nutrition. What you whisper to yourself has influence. Banish your inner critic and let your well-being soar.

Have you ever been standing in the kitchen talking yourself into eating something you know isn't really good for you?

Or maybe you were sitting in the car convincing yourself that you have other priorities today than working out.

Everything you are working toward regarding your health and wellness can be stopped by just a whisper.

The whisper, though screams SO LOUDLY! It echoes in your mind. The words repeat themselves in long barbaric paragraphs basically telling you that what you are doing isn't working.

Convincing?

Well, you answer that question. How often do your whispers control your next action?

The inner critic can halt all you have worked toward. After a couple of days that lead to a few weeks, you are back to square one.

Instead of replaying all the whispers of your inner critic, it's time to banish your inner critic.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Banish your inner critic!

I must warn you! This is not easy. You (or someone you respect) has been telling you that you are less than, not enough, fall short, or you should have.

What a messy middle! And it appears to be true to you, since you have heard it so often. It's in your daily vocabulary.

In order to banish your inner critic, you have to

  1. Change the words you whisper.
  2. Speak what you need to hear.
  3. Act on what you now know.
"One word can change your well-being. Let your whispers echo who you're becoming."

In marriage, we have a tendency to hold on to anger and frustration. Break up to break out!

The emotional baggage that plagues your heart becomes a disservice in your marriage.

You can continue to fight to get your way. Or you can look at your situation with a different set of lenses.

What are you doing to add fuel to the fire with your actions?

  • Is it the look you give in the morning?
  • Is it your tone of voice?
  • Is it your loud obnoxious comment?

These types of reactions can become toxic in your marriage. It builds barriers instead of bridging the gaps.

The goal of your marriage is to find common ground. The goal of your marriage is working together. The goal of your marriage is not about right or wrong, but unity as one.

But when we don't get our way, we can throw temper tantrums. It's like we're two-years-old again.

You want to be able to infuse hope into your marriage. You want to work with the man you said "I do" to.

You can't let your anger and pride rule your marriage.

You gotta break up to break out!

The K.I.S.S. ~ Break up to break out!

Break up with your selfish attitude and emotions that jail your love so you can break out the hope in your marriage. It's all about lifting each other up.

  1. Respond instead of react. We are so quick to judge. Listen to the other side of the story. Understand where your spouse is coming from. Be open to what you don't know. In other words, get to know the position your spouse is taking.
  2. Forgive to let go. You are not perfect and neither is your spouse. There must be some give and take in your marriage. Forgive so you can move on in your marriage. If you keep track of the hurts and pain caused, you will never be able to love without conditions.
  3. Lead with love. If you love only to get what you want, that is not a relationship living as one. Love is sacrificing for one another. Your vows did not say this marriage was to only support your wishes and desires. Treat your spouse with a tender heart and lead with love.

You are not perfect. But life is better side-by-side. Treat each other with love and joy. Take action for the change in marriage.
