Episode 103 'Listening with the intent of understanding'
08/01/22 • 22 min
I've been researching a bit more about clean communication, and in this episode I will share the six aspects of black and white thinking. This is a typical situation when we just listen to our drums, ignore others and any evidence we might possibly have got something wrong. Aside from the basic morals about of life, death, violence, etc where it's quite clear what is good, in many occasions we can expand our knowledge and understanding by taking some time to listen to the other side.
It's not always about who is right but about calming those unquenchable flames we throw at those who don't agree with our perfect thinking.

Could you possibly be always right? The confirmation bias surprise
Do our beliefs affect how we perceive reality? Is it possible that we see what we want to see and ignore what doesn’t fit our existing views?
In this episode I start by drawing conclusions from a Yale study (link provided below). The study shows that even people who were excellent at maths, when given data on a subject about which they held an opinion opposite to the conclusion of the study, they drew the wrong mathematical conclusion.

I will talk about why we spend so much energy trying to prove we are right, and ignoring any data or facts that don't fit our beliefs. There are six steps that create this situation and at some point we might quietly admit to ourselves that confirmation bias is a reality in our life. This tendency has the potential of hurting others and destroying all our relationships, so it's a great idea to consider this possibility when we are pondering 'life'.
As Thomas Huxley is quoted saying,
'It is not who is right but what is right that is of importance’

Perinatal anxiety - fearing that everything will go wrong
What's the difference between the natural motherly concern that the embryo or baby is fine, and a relentless worry focus on what can possibly go wrong?
Future mums consider many things:
- their health and the health of their baby
- economic aspects related to loss of earnings
- sleep issues
- weight management
- existing emotional issues
- medication
- relationships
And the list never ends! In fact some women will develop anxiety and even have panic attacks as their pregnancy progresses.
In this episode I will introduce some aspects of the intense emotions that might permeate pregnant women's minds and when we need to call for help.
